Chances are, if you weren’t entertained by the previous season, you probably aren’t watching this second season, and you most likely wouldn’t be reading what I’m currently typing. Yes, Chuunibyou is back with more random antics that continue to entertain quite a large group of viewers, but between the fantastic fights, the Dekomori “DESU,” and the random character interactions, why do we find this show entertaining?

Chuunibyou season 2 anime

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren Episode 1 Review

This episode is a perfect example of this show at its core without all the drama that surrounded the second half of the first season. It clearly has an allure that captivates some people, but why? One of the major reasons why is the fact that almost everything in this show revolves around the idea of “chuunibyou” or the “eighth grade syndrome.” To some degree, most of the main characters have their own level of the syndrome which gives a solid foundation for the writers to work with after the initial creation of what each character is like. Rikka and Dekomori are both suffering from a severe case of chuunibyou while Nibutani tries to move on from her embarrassing past. This contrast spurs on the episodic conflicts between the two groups who have a different take on the eighth grade syndrome. By incorporating Nibutani’s past in the way that they do, it gives the show an easy way of continuously dishing out entertaining moments between Dekomori and Nibutani.

The same sort of thing applies to other characters as well. Yuuta tries to push back his past, but because he’s influenced by Rikka, he is forced to regress into how he was before giving room for humor that is unfounded in other shows. There isn’t any other show that focuses on this idea of chuunibyou as much as this show does which leads to some fresh humor even though it may not be the most well thought out. Heck, even the lines that Rikka says in this episode about the “freemasons, ancient hieroglyphs,” and so on are entertaining to watch. Of course, this can’t be used too often so what KyoAni does to add some more spice to the episode is to add some fantastical battles to the otherwise mundane everyday life that the characters go through. It’s a way of drawing viewers in even if they find the humor of the series not too appealing, and it’s also a way to make the viewers who do like the humor that goes along with the character interactions even more invested. Add on the fact that it is KyoAni animating this and it’s easy to see why people are drawn to the series. Moreover, as I watched more of these chuunibyou moments, I got more attached to the characters. By this season, who doesn’t appreciate the DEKOMORI “DESU/DEATH?” Little things such as Rikka’s strand of hair bobbing and her reactions to getting hit in the head all give this show the flavor it needs to be entertaining.

But the question is, will this work for another entire season? Well, that just depends on how imaginative the writers really are. The thing is that while it is a regular school setting, the idea of chuunibyou is still at the center of this show, and because this is so, there are far more opportunities for the writers to exploit. We’ve seen just a small portion of what could be done with the whole Mori Summer debacle on Nibutani’s part, and I think this is just the beginning if another character comes into the fray. After all, with how slice of life shows are so very character driven, having the right variety of conflicting characteristics will most likely yield good results. The new character, Shinichimiya Satone, may be similar to Rikka what Dekomori is to Nibutani. Even if this is not the case, just by adding in a new character who either has a chuunibyou background or is currently going through it, there is an abundance of opportunities to continue the chuunibyou antics. There’s even the possibility of adding her in just as a normal person and then having her undergo change because of her interactions with Rikka and Dekomori. Then, we have characters such as Makoto, and Kumin who haven’t really gotten their time to shine yet. Honestly, with so many possibilities, there’s really no need for KyoAni to step into the more treacherous dramatic waters. They did so last season, and in retrospect, while it wasn’t horrible, it certainly wasn’t great. There is little room to fail if they stick to what they do with the first episode and just add some variety, but there is a lot of room to fail if they do decide to make things more dramatic. Leave the drama to more drama-focused shows, and leave the chuunibyouness to the more chuunibyou-focused shows. That’s the safer play. It’s not as if they cannot be successful at pursuing a more dramatic story, but if they do so, it does have to be better than the fun antics that they give up which may prove to be difficult. I don’t really trust KyoAni right now in giving us a great dramatic work because they haven’t done so well in that respect in the not so distant past *COUGH*KYOUKAINOASHIT*COUGH*. One thing is for certain though, the central idea of the eighth grade syndrome is far from fully exploited, and there’s no excuse for KyoAni if they do not make this season as entertaining as the previous.

That was a really enjoyable first episode!! Kyoani seems to
be putting in a lot of effort into this show; the animation is superb and the
action scenes are vibrant and beautifully drawn and animated. As expected, no
one can get the better of Touka…she’s just too awesome. Chuunibyou sure is a
    refreshing change from KnK.

Nibutani’s new look is just…ugh. That super-long skirt
makes her look like some granny. Heck, I’m a freshman just like Deko and no one
ever wears uniform skirts that length in school. The new Nibutani
    is interesting to watch, though.

Thought that the new op has even better animation than the
first. Yuuta’s strangely absent in it, though. Maybe Kyoani got too caught up
with the girls and forgot all about him. He’s one of the better male leads in
    shows of this genre, too.

Thanks for the detailed review DESU (:

New Nibutani is weird. Tooka’s ladle is now a boomerang. And she has arrived. I’m kinda excited on what KyoAni will dish out for the show.

      BETTER NOT DISAPPOINT.

I only read the conclusion, I didn’t want to spoil myself while still getting an idea of how this sequel is starting. I have a question:
I stopped watching the first season after episode 7 because of all the drama, should I just force myself to watch the remaining episodes before starting this second season? Or the summary I read of the finale is enough?

I don’t want to watch 2 hours of meh drama if I can avoid it ^^.(especially when the latest drama I watched is White Album 2… OMG AOTY)

    • George Ivascu

      dude,.,.there is no drama..just a bit a melancholic stuff…

      • Calaad

It’s definetely not on the same lvl as White album, but still dramatic to me.
Anyways, however you want to call it, that melancholic/dramatic second part was quite boring to me… or maybe the first 100% fun, light part was just that much better.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

If you really hate it, then just reading the conclusion is enough. Honestly, I didn’t find it THAT bad before. It doesn’t help that you watched WA2 though. But yeah, you can skip to this season without much of a problem. You’re not missing out on too much in the final few episodes. I liked the ending narration though.

There’s going to be a post later this week about my plans to change how I review shows episodically. It’s not that those shows aren’t worth my time, it’s just that there’s nothing much to talk about. I won’t do Chuunibyou on an episodic basis either. Anyways, you’ll see more details later.

  • Flaiboy

Why do I like this show?

It makes me laugh. Out loud. Every episode past and present. No other show has made me laugh as much as this one has.

Unlike some I didn’t mind the drama from the first season; I rather liked it. I thought it was a good counterpoint to the antics in the second half of that first season which added meaning in a way that was not heavy-handed.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Did you ever watch Hataraku Maou-sama? That’s a good show to watch if you’re looking for some laughs. It’s hands down the best comedy of the year for me by far.

Thumbs up for choosing Hataraku as the funniest anime of 2013! It’s actually in my top 5 anime of the year too.

An awesome episode to start the series! How I missed the small pranks, the gags, the epic chuuni 5v1 boss battle and of course.. the DESU! It’s a great episode, but you’re right. KyoAny can’t just do this for a whole season.

They need a plot and hopefully it’ll be a good one. The dramatic second half of the first season seemed a bit forced. The introduction of a new character this season is bound to add some tension. But let’s hope they’re not going to screw this up again.

I loved the way the episode ended, with Rikka waiting there on the riverbank for the new challenger, the person in the picture, to appear.

  • MgMaster

The only more recent KyoAni show I liked. I laughed,a lot,in the 1st season and while it certainly wasn’t as good when it decided to be a little more dramatic it didn’t bother me that much(still way better than KnK).

I’m looking forward to this but god I can’t help but be worried. Not only because of KyoAni’s recent blunders but also because I feel that this was a show that didn’t really demand a 2nd season. However, most of all I’m worried about the new pink haired girl that will most likely be introduced in the next episode. With an already sufficient number of characters I always worry when a new one is introduced because it’ll end up taking screentime from the ones we already know. At the same time, she can also be a great addition to our cast but I guess that will be seen in the next episode.
