Inexplicable, mysterious, unstable, and difficult to handle, love is something that many shows deal with. Some shows focus purely on it while other shows have it as an aside. It is an easy idea to target, but it is a very difficult one to pull off properly. So, how well does KyoAni forge this bond between two people?

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren Episode 2 Review

Most of the time when love is involved there is some form of rivalry between the characters. Whether it be a love triangle or a love pentagon, there is external character conflict. Sometimes, however, there is no such conflict and the only thing standing between two lovers is love itself. More specifically, it is the troubles of love from within the two characters and not from the difficulties of external factors such as having a rival. Of course Chuunibyou is not the first to attempt this, but although the core concept is the same, the situation, and the characters themselves are unique to Chuunibyou. This distinguishes the developments in this show from the others. Nevertheless, it’s still useful to set some guidelines so we can more clearly see what a show does well and what it doesn’t do well.

Firstly, we must discuss the chemistry between the two characters. Yes, this is important in most circumstances, but it must be further emphasized in a situation like this where the development of love between Rikka and Yuuta rely mostly on those two alone. As such, we have to look at what chemistry between the two that we currently have. Thankfully, it’s not a clean slate as there was a previous season, but more importantly, the chemistry between the two is made interesting and unique because of the “chuunibyou” aspect of the show. Instead of saying the same lines that we’ve heard over and over again in other shows, in this anime, they utilize this aspect to twist the words in a different way from what we’re used to, and also portrays it in an entertaining way as well with all of the Dark Flame Master badassery. It’s not as if the meaning behind their words and their actions are something we haven’t heard or seen before. There’s really no need to change those things because there’s a reason why they’re cliche after all. A different form of execution more than suffices to freshen things up and makes what would otherwise be cliche dialogue far more interesting. Overusing this aspect can also harm the chemistry between the two because such interactions may get a bit too typical, but so far, this show is using it where necessary, and while it’s nothing fantastic, it’s definitely not bad.

We must also take into account the progression of the love between Rikka and Yuuta. Quite frankly, I just don’t want to see their relationship drag on and on and on with barely any progress. Some manga are guilty of this by having some developments and then regressing to a previous state to prolong the series and milk it for all its worth. What am I saying? Basically, I hope that, if they do end up focusing on the love between the two for a decent amount of episodes that they actually, oh I don’t know, kiss by the end or something like that? What is the importance of a kiss you ask? A kiss in and of itself doesn’t mean anything. A kiss is supposed to be the culmination of the previous development and is the climax that signals that the relationship has reached a certain critical point. So by saying that I hope they kiss at the end, what I really mean is that they better build this up properly and close it up properly instead of either having poor build up to the kiss which would make it meaningless, or they build it up and don’t have a proper climax which would almost be just as disappointing. It wouldn’t be as bad as the former scenario because at least the progression would be fine, but the all important climax would be missing. They made progress this episode by holding hands and reaffirming what they need to do as lovers which is good. Hopefully what they mean by “we may fulfill our contract as we see fit” is that they may do things differently, like taking it slowly, and is not a sign of unnecessarily prolonging the romantic development between the two. Hopefully.

Another fun-filled, enjoyable episode!! But man, with that new girl things are going to get really complicated. I wonder if she’ll be likeable or just plain annoying. Right now I think she will fall into the latter category.

Nibutani is also back to normal *yay!!*, and she has proven to be a well-developed character and a good friend to Yuuta and Rikka. The Chuunibyou jargon the two often talk in is also interesting and funny, IMO. (Gold documentation LOL)

With regards to your new style, I think that it’s great. I can see that there’s more focus on analysis (felt that in the second paragraph of the review). TBH, though, your past reviews were already good. I guess this takes things to an even higher level. (*^▽^*)

How good this new character is will really determine my enjoyment for this season. I hope it’s going to be okay…

Thanks! I can see myself running out of things to talk about for this show though.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

And new challenger appears, desu! Is this the fabled person in the picture Rikka found in the first episode? A childhood friend? A fiancée? A fellow chuuni warrior out to conquer the Unseen Horizon? I sure hope it’s the last one.

With all the unique aspects of the show and the lack of progress in the relationship between Rikka and Yuuta something like this was bound to happen. But then again, the chuuni syndrome will give the future conflict, if any, an unique aspect.

I feel your pain man. We can’t wait for two whole seasons just to see them, get to first base, but their relationship focuses on the innocent aspects. Yuuta as mentioned in this episode is more of a father figure with short moments of Dark Flame Masta badassery. Development is slow, but if any show can get away with that, Chuuni2 can.

I’m not saying it should though. We can only wait and see what the authors have planned for the next episodes. As always, great review with a pretty detailed analysis of the episode. Keep up the good work!

This pace of development between the two is fine. I can accept it as long as they don’t keep stalling it. It looks to be going in that direction well because they didn’t take too long to hold hands. We can only hope that there’ll be major developments before this season is over. Then again, KyoAni sure loves to tease.

  • MgMaster

So like, after hearing Kazari’s words at the end I’m not worried about a new girl being introduced anymore but actually welcoming her with open arms. It looked like a foreshadowing for what’s to come where she might just end up being the combo breaker. Now we can only hope KyoAni goes through with it.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

As long as they entertain me, I’ll be pretty happy. I’m not expecting much from this show drama-wise anyways.

      • MgMaster

It’s entertaining alright but I don’t think it can survive on comedy alone throughout an entire season such as something like say,Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou(or other shows of the sort that focus solely on comedy). Of course I’m not expecting anything dramatic from Chu2koi,nor would I want it to attempt anything of the sort since it just doesn’t fit it.

Like you & most viewers,I just want to see some more progress between our two leads and the new girl can be the catalyst for that while keeping everything as lighthearted as possible.
