This episode is undoubtedly the most emotionally appealing one out of all the episodes we’ve had so far. While I wouldn’t say it’s as great as some people make it seem, it’s certainly one of the better episodes of the season and goes deep in terms of the conflicts that the people hold in this game of death.

There weren’t a lot of clues last episode and the investigation in this episode lasted less than a minute. Not a good sign, or so I thought. But little did I know that this case did not require that many clues to be solved once the motives and the pieces are put together. Right off the bat, Asahina accuses Yasuhiro, Togami and Fukawa with the murder while acting strange herself. At first, I thought that’s just attributed to the loss of her dear friend. Even so, there’s no way the case can be that easy with such a straightforward approach and Naegi quickly begins to break the situation down.

CHILL. OUT.

Asahina’s soft words of “it was me” struck me as incredibly strange. Why would she kill the person who was a lot of her emotional support? She didn’t have an easy time dealing with the situation unlike others and she relied on her friendship to get through it all. That is, unless Sakura thought she would get Asahina out of there, but that doesn’t make much sense either as Sakura thought all of them as her friends which was the reason why she didn’t want to listen to Monokuma anymore. However, that’s not solid evidence as what’s truly solid is the locked door scenario.

Too gud.

Too gud.

Noob.

Yeah, what a noob.

The event I thought to be least likely actually happened. Sakura did commit suicide which was why she had a smile on her face when she died. There’s not much to comment about the solving of the case itself as the most important part of the episode is the emotional side. In this death game, it’s extremely difficult for people to trust each other. Even a person who would never lay a hand on another would scramble to defend himself or herself at the threat of death. Indeed, it is very despairing to have people you trust literally smack you over the head no matter how understandable it is under the circumstances. However, Sakura knows that even if this is the case, despair will only bring forth more despair and the only way to redeem herself for what she has done to the group, that is, causing unrest and deceiving them, is to pacify everyone and give them strength to move as a collective and not as individuals.

MARTYR.

WHOA WHOA BIG BOY DROPPING OUT OF THE GAME.

Fukawa Touko creepy

Okay, that’s just creepy.

Alter Ego

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…

Asahina misunderstands Sakura’s intentions with the forged letter which is a far cry from what she truly wanted to happen. She should have actually realized that this is the case for Sakura always put her friends in high regard. But who could really blame her? In all of this mess, there are few who could see through the hate that brews up from the death of one so close. I’m much more surprised that Monokuma actually decides to read the real letter out to everyone instead of keeping it and letting the despair spread itself. Nonetheless, the real letter sounds much more like the Sakura we know with the various nuances. You see, when people kill each other, that only brings about fear, uncertainty, and rash actions. However, if one becomes the sacrifice that stops the cycle and opens everyone’s eyes on who is the true enemy, it really will “douse the flames of infighting.”

I THINK THE ANIMATORS SCREWED UP HER MUSCLES.

Genocider Sho

You play too much eroge.

Dude. Does she have your key? That’s kind of creepy… but also pretty hot.

ROKUDO MOKURO?!

The rest of the people still alive can look to this event and maybe think twice before attempting to kill. Better yet, it is one of the only “positive” things that has happened since this death game began. Yes, it’s not really positive in the sense that one person had to lose her life to make this happen, but it is still a ray of hope for those still remaining. I guess Monokuma is underestimating the humans which is understandable considering how he’s been doing his job very well. That is, making some delicious butter. Oh gawd. Uhh… ANYWAYS. IT’S A RAY OF HOPE THAT WILL PROBABLY BE TRAMPLED VERY SOON.

Lastly, we have a little bit of a “spoiler” with Sakura’s will. The mastermind has apparently tinkered with their bodies. As for how, I have absolutely no idea and would guess that it has something to do with their memories being wiped and the overarching story concerning their overall situation. There is also the last SUPER DUPER HIGH SCHOOLER OF DESPAIR WHICH MY GOD IS THAT SUPER DUPER OR WHAT? Does this guy poke people right before they sleep, forcing them to wake up? Maybe he or she eats food right in front of others when they are extremely hungry. Yep, that would be despairing.

Danganronpa – The Animation Episode 9 Review

Overall, I enjoyed this episode quite a bit and is the one that I found to be fleshed out the best. We had a generous portion of the episode dedicated to the trial which led to a better episode. For this episode, the shortening of the investigation is fine as it’s not so much about the mystery of the murder as it is about the situation at hand and what this trial brings about to the rest of the people remaining. With so little people left, we may see this anime depart from its usual murder and trial proceedings to figure out the overarching story which will answer a lot of our questions.

Personally, I didn’t find this episode to be that great emotionally and I think it’s mostly due to the fact that we haven’t explored deep into a lot of the characters in the first place. At the very least it’s decent and I didn’t roll my eyes while watching those parts. It’s just that it didn’t have that much of an impact on me even if the Asahina tears were quite well animated. Regardless, I enjoyed watching this episode and found it having some more-profound-than-normal parts which I can always appreciate. Most importantly, I am excited to see what will arise from the stalemate between the students. Let’s see what mysterious SUPER DUPER HIGH SCHOOLER OF DESPAIR can do.

Well it took 2 people and a flask of poison to take this giant down. And she didnt even put up a fight. A noble sacrifice done to hopefully stop this fiasco. Or is it?! Like in a fighting game at the very last second a new challenger appears. Things will only get crazier from here on and we’ll see a lot more of Kirigiri’s creepy side too.

On a side note… That wallpaper lols!

Things get even more interesting as Ikusaba Mukuro is finally revealed as the sixteenth student. Can’t wait for things to unfold on the last few episodes

Definitely more excited about what the last few episodes than I was in this anime.

Best adaptation thus far. Finally an episode that fully brought out the characters’ emotions. But that is ALL on Asahina’s side though.

Hagakure had his one and only outstanding moment in the game where he bravely admit that he is the culprit, sadly that’s cut out. This case is really simple as the closed room and murder all points to suicide, but the evidences over-complicate the entire case.

Biggest complaint I have is on Alter Ego. His execution is voted the saddest. But the anime left out many interactions between AE and the gang; they honestly treat him as a real life friend and promised to get out together. But right after his execution, they skipped to the ED straightaway and jumped into Ikusaba Mukuro immediately, without allowing anyone to show their despair and grief. This makes his entire purpose really forgettable to me.

After the saddest execution, the best execution is coming up next. One that finally tops Leon’s.

Upupupupu I’m SO looking forward to it. Be warned, the genre of this series is going to change to DESPAIR soon. Mystery? Upupupupupu…

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I found the Alter Ego execution to be lacking which is pretty disappointing.

ARE YOU TAKING UP THE MONOKUMA LAUGH NOW?! YOUR “UPUPUPUPUP” WILL PAY. RAWR. HOPE WILL PREVAIL… Right?

  • NoReL

Baka Monokuma BAKA! why the hell did you reveal Asahina’s real last will!?
I thought he would be little smarter than this!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

He underestimated them is all. That, or he could be bringing their hopes up so they can crash even harder. When people’s hopes are high and they get utterly crushed, it’ll affect them much more than if they had no hope in the first place.

Hey just a random question like usual. Have you watched K On? I have a list of older but populat anime ( ex. Mirai Niki, hitman reborn, steins gate, blue excorsist, fate stay night) that I try to mix in with the current anime that a watch. K on was Have my list and personally I find it to be one of the most enjoyable anime I’ve watched. Just wondering on you’re opinion of it. Oh PS if you’re a fan of mystery/horror anime, Another ranks #1 in my opinion

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I actually did not finish K-On but I did watch a bit of it. I won’t give my opinion on the show in general without finishing it as that’d be a disservice. If I ever get around to finishing it, I will probably post my thoughts on FB and Google+ as that’s what I do now when I finish an older series.

    • The Atomic Dwarf

That anime could be described in just 3 words: Moe, music and mother effing tea! It’s actually the one that started all this Moe mania with Love Lab and Free being the Moe of this current season. KyoAni is a Moe genius. Btw did I remember to say Moe?

Anyways love the OP and the ED songs and animations.

Just to mention this before the next few episodes. The story is heading into the main plot now, and as usual there will be many hints and evidences along the way. But there will be 1 scene that will seem to be of extreme importance to the story, but instead there will be no explanation to it at all even at the end of the game. This is because everything about it has got to do with the sequel, and any hints are super duper spoilers, even more spoilerish as to who is the true mastermind of the first game.

Thus there is some debate among the gamers on whether to let anime viewers know that the scene is actually not important to the current plot, so that they can focus their attention on other hints.
