Date A Live Episode 1 Impressions

The new season is finally here. I know I haven’t been blogging anime left and right as busy as things are, but I’ve been fairly busy as of late. However, expect a lot of content on Friday and over the weekend. Anyways, let’s start things off with Date A Live, an anime that you will probably either like or hate. As usual, the more critical review will be at the bottom.

Spacequake anime Itsuka Kotori

Itsuka Kotori kick

PANTSU.

Itsuka Kotori lollipop Tonomachi Hiroto

The anime starts off serious enough with a preface detailing how the world has been devastated by spacequakes that have killed off many people. Well, then it goes completely in the other direction and tries to appease the audience with humor. There’s nothing like a flying pantsu kick to the stomach in the morning right Itsuka Shidou? Yeah. Meet our protagonist, some random teenager that’s bound the save the world again. Of course, a sidekick imouto (Kotori) with Taketatsu Ayana being the VA would only be proper. And if you’ve seen Oreimo, it’s a bit awkward having to sit through the same voice actor who butcher her brother with verbal abuse.

Date a Live origami Tobiichi

Origami…

Tobiichi Origami Okamine Tamae Itsuka Shidou running Date A Live kotori

Then, we have the quiet one called Tobiichi Origami. Let’s face it, there’s nothing new with her knowing the main protagonist with him having absolutely no idea. There’s nothing special until he gets into a spacequake situation where his beloved sister is waiting for him, or so he thinks. What does he do in a potential life or death situation like this? He rushes out to save his sister like any rational human being would. Men have to keep their promise right? You can’t leave your sister hanging.

Date A Live Tohka

Nice character design.

Yatogami Tohka

She just randomly turns around and shows you that face?

Shiny…

Tobiichi Origami AST Tohka vs Origami

An angel? It must be an angel. An angel in glowing armor, descended from the heavens that is in the middle of a crater created by… a spacequake. Wait, what’s that voice? Is that… Yozora Marina Inoue I hear?? While not much is explained initially to Shidou, it’s fairly obvious to us viewers what’s happening. Clearly, the cause of the spacequakes is because of people like “Princess” (Yatogami, Tohka) who have randomly descended on the earth. However, it remains a mystery as to exactly why. And while we contemplate that, admire the beautiful visuals and the boobs flashy fight. Though, the glance backwards for Shidou to say how sad she looks is extremely awkward.

Murasame Reine Kannaduki Kyouhei Ratatoskr anime

Right, wait what? Kotori is the captain? Right. Okay. Yeah, I can accept that, it’s the first episode after all. Who knows, maybe next episode we’ll be detailed how Shidou is an illegitimate child and Kotori is the heir of a corporation in charge of bringing peace and prosperity back into the world that Spirits (seirei) are invading. But more importantly, Kotori’s attitude changes to one that I’m more familiar with and we get introduced to side characters that try to add humor to the story. Does it work? Eh, hit and miss a lot of the time, but I do hope that they get better at it.

DATING SIM.

So, remember that huge spacequake that killed 150 million people? What kind of monster descended for that to happen or maybe, that’s what happened when the original rift between this world and the other occurred?? Oh well, I’m sure all our questions will be answered right? They are explaining how the AST, the group that Origami is in, “slaughters” spirits. Okay, so how do we deal with this spirit situation? What can Shidou, one utterly normal and powerless individual do in order to save humanity?!?!
Play a dating simulator.

Itsuka Shidou

………………………….
Right. Well, I can’t say I didn’t expect that from the name. It is Date A Live after all. But why Shidou? Why him? And what’s to say that the “Princess” will even put down her sword and somehow commit herself to be in a harem alongside Origami with cookies in her hands? (PVPVPVPV) I’m almost certain that there are better candidates out there to swoon a girl. Well, let’s see how well he can do with an angry Origami that’s out to kill all the spirits.

Date A Live First Impressions (Episode 1) Review

Most of the time, I’ll probably be just posting my reactions of what’s happening above and my take on the circumstances at hand. I won’t be overly critical and I’ll play along most of the time. This review is for those of you who are interested in a more critical perspective. Without further ado, let’s begin.

There’s nothing really special about this anime that hasn’t been done before, and the humor, in my opinion, isn’t exactly a deciding factor as it’s not great. The serious atmosphere that is put from the onset is destroyed by the notion of a dating simulator being something that will save humanity. It would be more fair to categorize this as a romcom with some added elements. And since the humor isn’t exactly great, it’ll depend a lot on the romance and how the characters interact with each other. So far, Kotori is probably the most interesting one and the Shidou is a fairly typical male lead. The “Princess” may be interesting, but we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m not that interested in Origami and her conflict with the “Princess” as I doubt it’ll be that serious in the end anyways.

Before I say that the visuals are great, which they are, I have to say that the first episode is almost always the most visually appealing compared to the ones that follow it until the climax. The character designs are not bad, and I do like the armor that the “Princess” has. So all I’ll say for now is that it’s great, and if they somehow manage to keep it up, that will be a nice added bonus. But let’s be honest, if you’re watching this anime for something profound, you’re watching the wrong anime. Seriously, this is meant for the turn-your-brain-off type of entertainment that you can still enjoy. In fact, it maybe pointless to be overly critical with the review over something that’s not meant to be “fun.” Nonetheless, unless this anime excels at being entertaining with the comedy, or somehow entrancing us with the romance, I feel that it won’t be better than average at best. I’m hoping that the romance will be interesting, but who knows. Maybe we’re just looking at another one of those painfully below average anime.

I think you mean review and I included various pictures from the whole episode one. Are you asking where are the other episode reviews? Sorry, but I’m just not that interested in this anime to do the other episodes. If I’m not interested, there’s no point to do a review.

Yeah, it’s selling a lot more than I expected. Not sure if they had some ticket thing or whatever, but I guess people just like this anime. Well, maybe I’ll check it out to see why people like it so much.

Did you watch the anime in its entirety, or at least see Kurumi in action? If you have and still feel this way then I’ve got nothing to say, but if you haven’t then do. It’s great. :9

Maybe I’ll check it out then. But seriously, I wasn’t impressed at all and I’m not sure why it sold so many copies.

Bro, this is…absolutely…an amazing anime. In fact, there needs to be more shows like this. In fact, the reason I’m here is because I’m in a search to find a show as good as this one. Therefore, in defense of the this great anime, I must declare you reconsider this anime as something that exceeds your expectation.
However, after your careful reconsideration is completed, I will accept your honset input – no matter if it’s bad or good.
