FALL 2013 ANIME (PREVIEW) – LIST

Alright guys, I have to admit that I am not exactly that happy with how the summer season turned out. Sure, there are a few anime that stood out, but that’s a bare minimum of most seasons of anime. However, this time, this fall, the lineup of anime is extremely impressive. I’m covering 28 anime in this preview, but the entire list is much more for that. (Check the notes below) I’ve separated the different TV Series into four tiers which will be an indicator of my anticipation for the season. Also, I usually don’t do movie previews, but I did put a few in the bonus locked section near the very bottom for those interested.

Note: I am only previewing TV Series that I will at least watch the first episode of. I will not preview series that I haven’t watched previous seasons of either. This is not a complete list. For a much more complete list, please see RandomC’s preview, and this chart for the absolutely complete list.

Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road has been moved to the winter season. It does look promising from the newly released PV so stay tuned for the winter preview.

Tiered System

Within the tier, it starts from what I least anticipate to what I most anticipate. The last (most anticipated) few ones of the tier can sometimes be fairly close to the next tier. Consequently, the first few of each tier can sometimes be close to the previous tier. The tiers are not relative to the anime in each season. This means that there are no fixed number of any tier for any season. It’s possible for there to be no tier ones. The number of tier one and tier two anime are probably good indicators of how good the season looks at a glance. The status is a general indicator about how likely it is for me to do first impressions and actual reviews. It doesn’t mean that I’ll do all tier 2 impressions, but I’ll try to do as many as I can for those that interest me. I will have midterms when the season starts so expect some delays.

Note: These are tentative. Also, if any anime, regardless of tier, has great episodes, I will try to do reviews.

Tier 4: Least anticipated – Will try it out, but very prone to being dropped.
Status: First episode only unless it’s good enough

Tier 3: Moderately anticipated – Looks at least somewhat interesting. Will probably hold out for a few episodes.
Status: Three episode rule

Tier 2: Heavily anticipated – At first glance, appears to be above average. Three episode rule at least.
Status: First Impressions and/or general review at the end of the season.

Tier 1: Extremely anticipated – Very promising anime that I will most likely watch every episode of.
Status: Episodic Reviews

To avenge Erena, Sakura enters the female pro-wrestling matches. (MAL)

Girls wrestling it out while making erotic moans and groans may be hot, but if that’s all it has to offer, I’m definitely not too excited to see where it’ll go. The PV certainly makes me even less anticipated as it consists of a girl moaning for over a minute straight. But hey, at least ARMS knows their way around portraying women being erotic after all their experience with making Queens Blade and all that oversized boobie goodness right? Yeah, that, and Maoyuu was a disappointment although I can’t be certain whether that’s attributed to the source material or the adaptation itself. Nevertheless, definitely near the bottom of my list unless they can pull off some actual plot and not just giant melons.

The story centers around Takahiro Mizuno, a student training to be a begleiter (knight’s assistant) at an academy where aspiring knights joust. He himself had come to this academy to train as a knight, after becoming the unrivaled junior champion in his own home country. However, an injury in a tournament’s finals forced him to withdraw. Instead, he decides to be a begleiter to one of the academy’s maiden knights and help her win. (MAL)

I did actually see the visual novel of this before this was announced. I mean, hot girls and a 18+ rating? I did not, however, play the game as visual novels are not my thing so I cannot tell you how good the actual story is. I’m pretty sure most of you know what to expect from this anime. It’s probably going to be very similar to Princess Lover! as that has the exact same background as this one being a visual novel by the same company that was adapted. As it stands, the PVs show that it’s at least faithfully being adapted animation-wise for the characters are well animated. I am really hoping they do expand upon the romance and not just how attractive the female characters are, but my hope remains low for this series and I will probably watch it only for the hot girls. But seriously, they are really hot.

Fabulous bishounen with glasses doing stuff? First Free!, and now this? Wait a second, Free! is actually not just pandering to a certain crowd without bringing some actual story and developments as well! With barely anything shown in the preview, we can’t really get a good grasp about what to expect. I haven’t seen anything by the director, but Studio DEEN has done a large amount of shows ranging all kinds of genres. I wouldn’t count this anime out just yet without seeing anything. The first episode alone will be a good indicator as to what this anime will be though so I’ll at least do that much.

At first glance, this anime looks to be fairly promising with an interesting premise with possibly some deep themes. This anime used to be in my second tier until I saw the review on the manga and started reading it myself. I have read roughly five chapters out of the seven that he or she has and I completely agree with his or her sentiments. The manga is really just a guro manga with little to no depth at the ethical questions it tries to tackle. I recommend reading the review to get a clear view of what the manga really is as I’d just be repeating what is stated in the review. Since this is an adaptation of the manga… I’m really not anticipating it that much anymore. If you like gore, you’ll probably like this, but if you’re looking for something meaningfully horrific or psychological, you’d probably want to stay away. I’ll check out the first episode to see how the anime is, but if it’s anything like the manga, I am not going to bother.

The story is set in the near future when GunPla Battles, competitions that pit Gundam plastic models against each other, have become popular worldwide in the “Second GunPla Boom.” Sei Iori, a first-year middle-school student and the only son of a model shop owner, is talented at building GunPla, but inexperienced in the GunPla Battles. He encounters a mysterious boy named Reiji, who happens to be an accomplished Gundam Fighter. Together, they strive for the GunPla Battle world championships. (ANN)

Alright, I know what you’re all thinking. It’s probably something along the lines of, “My God, how have the Gundam series degenerated to become something like this?” I first saw this more than a month ago and my first impression at them revealing this anime is that they just really want to sell more Gunpla. That’s what the Gundam series has been about a lot of the time, and this is a clear move to get them to sell more units. Okay, I mean the premise itself is just people fighting with Gunpla with character designs that are nothing special. However, it does bring different Gundam from different series all together so I can’t say I wasn’t happy to see Strike Freedom appear onscreen. Besides, none of us have high expectations for this anime so if it can deliver some mecha action, I think it’ll serve fine as a turn-your-brain-off kind of entertainment. Though, that’s probably all it will be as I doubt the story is going to go anywhere significant. But hey, some pew pew action with some nostalgia thrown in isn’t all too bad as long as they actually deliver the action.

The story centers around Kanade Amakusa, a boy cursed with the mental power of “absolute multiple-choice”—a multiple-choice quiz will suddenly appear in his mind, and the choice he makes will become his reality. For example, he would have to choose between going nude from the waist up or the waist down in school. While in school, he is given another choice: 1) A beautiful girl will fall before him or 2) he will fall from the rooftop in female clothes. He chooses option 1, and a blonde girl named Chocolat falls before him. (ANN)

I actually had this anime a lot lower on the list when I was making the draft of the preview list mainly because it’s the same old school life with moe female characters just like a lot of anime out there. Still, after watching the preview another time, it actually gave me some Date A Live vibes, which isn’t necessarily bad. I did watch until the end of Date A Live and enjoyed it a lot more during the end due to the characters and the heightened story progression. Hopefully, the female characters are not the same old uninteresting tsunderes. Stereotypes are fine, it’s just that they have to be interesting to watch. Chocolat, the petite female blonde with overwhelming breasts certainly has partially won me over with her character design already. This may become an enjoyable show even if there is little chance of it becoming excellent with either some well done humor or just some mediocre drama. I expect that it’s going to be one of those shows that pads the season out but can be fun as well.

The story revolves around Raul, a boy who did not become a Hero, since the demon lord was already defeated just before his Hero exams. His dreams dashed, Raul spends his days working at a magic shop in the capital. One day, a part-time job seeker appears at the shop with an amazing résumé:

Name: Phino
Previous Occupation: Demon Lord Heir
Motive: Because my father was defeated

The work comedy revolves around this former Hero-in-training and the daughter of the demon lord.

This sounds a lot like Hataraku Maou-sama! doesn’t it? These types of shows are really common nowadays and by the looks of the preview, this anime will probably focus more on the breast physics rather than the actual story like Hataraku did. I can’t say I’m too excited about this show, but I held the same expectations for Hataraku except that it was done by White Fox, a studio that do consistently great work so I had a bit higher hopes for it. This time… I can’t say I feel the same way. If this is just one of those non-humorous harem shows, then I’m dropping it very quickly.

Here, we have what seems to be just those very calming slice of life type of anime. After skimming through the first few chapters of the manga, I’m still not really sure how I feel about this show. It does have that soothing atmosphere that may be heart-warming to some. This season is definitely action packed so this may serve well as a balancer. It all depends on whether the soothing atmosphere and the comedy will keep viewers interested because it doesn’t look like anything overly eventful is going to happen in the series. The strange thing is that it’s marked as seinen which is what made me a lot more interested than I would have been otherwise. I’m waiting to see just what they are putting in this anime that seems to target to a different crowd, seinen.

Cycling anime are a bit harder to pull off than other sports anime because it consists of mostly the same thing. They’re riding on bicycles and it’s not like there’s a ton of variation even if you add in some unrealistic moves. Unlike basketball, tennis, and baseball, it’s concentrated on just the act of pedaling which can make the pacing a problem. There are some moments that can be amazing, but overall, it may suffer from the lack of variety. Yes, I know there are different kinds of cyclists focusing on different parts like what is shown in Overdrive. It’s still not nearly as much in terms of variety compared to other sports. What tends to happen is that there are flashbacks and so on to pad out the episode which means that the characters and the overall goals the characters have must be captivating enough. If they can deliver that, it may be interesting, but it is at a inherent disadvantage against other types of sports anime.

This type of anime that focus on helping people through various means are not my thing, but if anything, it’s difficult for them to turn out to be terrible. The very idea of helping people with the calm atmosphere that the preview oozes can be enough for people to come back for the first few episodes. If it’s anything similar to something like Mushishi, then that’d definitely be worth a watch as Mushishi is such a relaxing and fantastic watch filled with bits and pieces of stories. The key with these stories about helping people is that the protagonist must undergo some form of change as a result of his or her actions. That, or the characters have enough likability to make the act of helping seem significant.

Having a light novel author father and an eroge illustrator mother, Kanou Shinichi is a thoroughbred otaku. However he does not have any special power except for his broad knowledge, sharp insight, and impeccable instinct about “MOE” and its products, from manga to anime to games to light novel to figures. One day he found himself transported to a fantasy world where elves live and dragons fly. And he is given a task—not to fight monster or embark on a quest, but to enhance cultural exchange by becoming a “moe missionary” in this fantasy world! He meets a palace guard who has a bit of fujoshi taste, a half-elf maid, and the empress who is a little girl. He comes up with the idea of building a school. At first it runs as a comedy but later there are serious matters that Shinichi needs to face: ethnic discrimination, social problems, conflict with neighboring countries, sabotage by opposition elements including Japanese government, etc. Can he overcome the obstacles, successfully bring “moe” culture to the fantasy world, and help the people there as well? (MAL)

Readin the synopsis on MAL, I find myself quite intrigued at the premise of the show. A person who is a moe missionary as well as a “thoroughbred otaku?” The fantasy part is a nice touch, but what I’m very interested in is the more serious aspects concerning “ethnic discrimination, social problems,” and so on. Will this be the show that mixes the moe with the seriousness well enough to be similar to how Hataraku mixes the humor and the seriousness or how DxD mixes the OPPAI and the story? I really think the selling point for me is the more serious side and the fantasy setting due to personal preference. I’m not too confident in the studio or the director, but this is still a moe anime to watch out for if the more serious side turns out to be significant and not just an unimportant factor to the story.

I know what all of you are thinking. I know. “Is this Sword Art Online?!?!?!” Looking at the premise, it’s almost exactly the same. Now some of you will ignore this just because of that and I think that’s a huge mistake. Firstly, the story and characters of SAO aside, I don’t think anyone can complain that Aincrad is a nice setting. With all the bits of game elements added into the anime such as hunting down bosses, crafting, and activities like that, it made for a very interesting scenario. The thing is that it didn’t expand on that too much when it is arguably the best part of the anime. I’m hoping that Log Horizon will dig deeper into the game mechanics and make a more game-like anime. With 25 episodes, hopefully they are stuck just to that world and live to their hearts content in that world so we can see what other interesting game quirks can be had. Well, I just like the fact that it has a video game side to it which is why I’m going to give this a shot.

I’m not a big fan of sports anime though I have seen all of Prince of TennisOverdrive, read some of One Outs, and Eyeshield 21. I really want to finish the last two as I didn’t, but anyways, I still do enjoy the ones that are well known because they provide the tension along with some special abilities that make things interesting. To me, it looks like Diamond no Ace will be more like the Eyeshield 21 version of baseball rather than it being like One Outs. Then again, I haven’t seen all of One Outs. Regardless, having Production I.G. and Madhouse working together is quite awesome so I’ll keep my eye out for what this show has to offer. There’s also quite the praise surrounding the source material as well which is the reason why it’s the highest of the third tier. Will this anime be more about teamwork? Will it be the mind games? Will it be the special moves? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Surprisingly enough, I actually read a chunk of this manga before this was announced to be adapted into an anime. Looking at the previews, I am very happy with how they have animated the series as that looks great. Some may not like it, but I think it fits the show well. There are some interesting developments in the story and the doll aspect gives a nice connection between the various characters. Speaking of the characters, the female protagonists, at least Yaya, the black haired girl is fairly likable and isn’t a damn tsundere which is always nice. She’s damn loyal and the fact that she’s a doll makes for some interesting scenarios. The soundtrack in the previews is also very nice and we can thank Yokoyama Masaru for that. Overall, the anime looks to be going in a good direction and the source material isn’t too bad though I will have to read it again to refresh my memory.

As soon as I saw the preview, I knew it’s Nagi singing it which is an immediate plus. Animation-wise, the preview looks fantastic as expected of P.A. Works. Okada Mari is in charge of composing the series and she has been responsible for some… dramatic works. Sometimes a bit too much so. This anime does look calming, but so did AnoHana until things got emotional which then turned it into an anime built for making you feel emotional. I’m not exactly sure how the story will turn out for this and Okada Mari’s works have been hit or miss with me. I just hope that things aren’t as dramatic as they are in Sakurasou even though I enjoyed that anime very, very much. It was one of the only few anime that made me feel truly inspired for some strange reason. Anyways, that’s a topic for a different time. As much as I liked Sakurasou, I can’t argue that some moments are just way too cringe-worthy and far too dramatic. If she tones it down, this will probably be a fairly good watch.

I haven’t seen the alternate versions, but as long as the action is like this for the whole season with the right mix of supernatural elements for the story, I’m going to be watching this eagerly. From the reviews I’ve read, the original series back in 2008 isn’t exactly phenomenal though the response to the OVAs have been a bit more on the positive side. However, for some reason, the one chosen for the observation was a apprentice Sword Shaman girl, Himegari Yukina. Wielding the strongest anti-primogenitor spirit spear, Yukina arrived at Demon District, Itogami City. What is the true identity of the Fourth Primogenitor, Akatsuki Kojou, she encountered over there!? (Baka-tsuki + MAL)

Dammit, I’m a sucker for these types of shows. Fantasy based story with hot girls and a badass main character who looks to be a vampire? Count me in. The premise already notes that the main character, Akatsuki, is the world’s strongest vampire. Immediately, this brings in some potentially interesting conflicts and some worries as well. The protagonists are not really on the same side right off the bat so the first few episodes should see some interesting interactions. What worries me is that it’s a bit difficult to pull off an extremely strong main character from the start as that means less struggle character and story-wise. With that said, I’m getting a very good vibe from this anime that I just can’t put my finger on.

Tada Banri, a newly admitted student at a private law school in Tokyo, found himself completely lost after the opening ceremony, trying to find his way to the freshman orientation. At that moment, he ran into another lost freshman from the same school, Yanagisawa Mitsuo, and they hit it off at once. Somehow arriving at their intended goal just on time, there appeared in front of the two a beautiful girl holding a bouquet of roses. The girl then whacked Mitsuo across the face with the bouquet and handed the flowers over to him. “Freshman, congratulations”, was all she said, and then left. The stylish, well dressed, perfect woman that had swung at Mitsuo was his childhood friend, Kaga Kouko. As children they had promised to marry each other one day, fulfilling their dreams. In order to escape from her, Mitsuo had gone out secretly and taken the examination for this well known private college, but now she showed up in the freshman orientation hall. She too had taken the law school entrance examination, catching up with him there. (Baka-Tsuki)

This is probably going to be one of those hard hitting romance shows of the season. It is directed by Chiaki Kon who I’m not overly familiar with but others are and seem to dislike her for it. A beautiful girl chasing a guy after they promised to marry each other during childhood is every man’s dream, right? Well, apparently not because the damn guy ran away from this woman so something must be going on. I’m intrigued to see exactly why he ran away even though the girl is so “perfect.” I really hope it’s not because he lost his memories or something like that. Anyways, the original creator is Takemiya Yuyuko, the author of Toradora. That should say something about how the source material probably is. Hopefully the adaptation doesn’t get screwed over. Oh, and Shimo Fumihiko, the person who did the script for Kokoro Connect is also part of the team. Yep. Things look pretty good.

Tsuchimikado Harutora was born into a prestigious Onmyoji family, but he can’t see “spirit energy”. Therefore, he’s been enjoying a peaceful daily life with his friends at an Onmyo branch school. One day, his childhood friend Tsuchimikado Natsume, heir to the head family, suddenly appears. Will this cause his destiny spring into motion!? (MyPersonal-scan)

Seeing that it has a manga version, I took a shot at the first five to six chapters to get a better idea of where it should place in the preview. Though, I have to say that I am not nearly as much of a fan of manga as I am of anime. There’s something about the premise before I even read the manga that sounded kind of familiar. Supernatural aspects, family bloodlines carrying on the lineage and power aren’t really uncommon. Looking at the preview, it’s probably going to be a very faithful adaptation as all parts, except for the way some characters reacted strangely enough, are in the manga as well. I’m very much enjoying the way the manga is progressing with some interesting characters all around. The supernatural aspect gets better as the manga progresses as well. I kind of like the “slice of life” aspect of the manga a bit more than the action because that isn’t really well done. However, by the looks of the preview, the action looks great. They did change the way the female protagonist is reacting in the preview and it’s not really in a good direction either. We’ll have to see though, but I have pretty high hopes for this!

The story takes place in the year 2061 AD, where global warming is a thing of the past and the early days of a glacial era now cover the entire world. Three descendents of Galileo living in Tuscany, Italy—Hozuki Ferrari, Hazuki Ferrari, and Kazuki Ferrari—are suddenly attacked by a mysterious organization and ultimately end up on international wanted lists. The organization’s purpose is something called “Galileo Tezoro.” With no clue what is going on, the three sisters must join forces to overcome the crisis, but their personalities are too different, making this no easy task. (ANN)

NoitaminA is back! Looking at the first actual preview that shows more than just artwork, it looks to be more action oriented than I first thought. The premise itself is weirdly interesting especially with the preview in mind. Having not only an organization after them, but also highlighting the fact that their personalities may get in the way makes me think that we’ll be having some interesting character interactions. Visually, the preview is top-notch and the character designs are quite nice. Hell, I’m just looking forward to the action that this series focuses on with all these girls. Should be an entertaining watch.

Original anime scheduled to run on noitaminA for 2 cours. The anime’s taglines read, “To those ‘adults’ who don’t want to become adults…” and “Hero will never give up, never hide, never be defeated, never accept evil.” (MAL)

Here’s noitaminA anime number two. When I first saw and read the short bits and pieces of this anime it made me think of Tiger & Bunny. This is going to be running for two seasons which is almost always a good thing. Will we get some super hero action that runs into deeper themes like Tiger & Bunny? Will we get some FABULOUS action? Takahiro Omori has a ton of experience with some works like Baccano, Natsume Yuujinchou, and so on. I’m not sure, but I think it’s been a while since he’s directed an anime. The tagline reads, “To those ‘adults’ who don’t want to become adults…” and “Hero will never give up, never hide, never be defeated, never accept evil.” Will this be a transformation of a person from normality into the days of being a super hero? By adults who don’t want to be adults, does it mean that the main characters want to stick to their childish dream of being a hero and defeating evil? It has this hint of maturity underneath all of this and I’ll be looking forward to it!

Together with Iona, they take on the Fleet of Fog. (ANN)

Man, I’m glad I decided to check out the manga because the pictures shown on MAL and other sites really don’t serve well as to what this anime is going to be about. Battleships with giant laser beams and torpedos that wreck other futuristic battleships. I mean, just read the premise and look at the previews. Damn straight, this is going to be some good eye-candy. Now, I know some people really dislike how it’s 3D. Personally, I never really have problems with 3D especially when it’s giant battleships firing all these weapons of mass destruction. Though, since they are animating the characters that way as well… it may be a bit iffy. Story-wise, there’s a lot of technobabble, but the previews and the premise should be enough to warrant a try at least. I’m looking forward to how the battleship action will turn out because that looks damn great.

This anime is just gorgeous. Yes, this is the GoHands that animated K-Project. Hang on though, we’re not done with the similarities just yet. We also have Mikio Endo who did an absolutely amazing job with K’s soundtrack doing the music for this anime as well. Not only that, but angela returns once again to do the theme song. I was getting crazy K vibes from the preview without looking any info up and rightfully so. The visual and audio aspects were hands down the best part of K. This time, however, there is source material to back up the aesthetics. I was really hoping this would happen because sadly, K wasn’t great by any means story or character-wise. I read a few bits of the manga, but far too little to say whether it’ll be great or not. Regardless, it should provide a more solid foundation that will probably yield a better result. I’m really, really hoping this works out because it’s just aesthetically wonderful. I’ll be doing episodic reviews of this for sure so we’ll be seeing how this will unfold throughout the season! But seriously, the music and the already-kind-of-nostalgic filters with the wonderful animations? So much potential.

The story is set on a high school that the student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin rules by force. Wielding a giant Basami scissors sword, the wandering transfer student Ryuuko Matoi brings about upheaval on the campus. Ryuuko searches for the mysterious figure who caused her father’s death, but confronting her are the student council’s “four divine kings.” Fortunately, Ryuuko is aided by a talking sailor uniform who tells her, “Wear me. When I am worn by you, this power will become manifest.” (ANN)

Trigger, check. The two people who worked together for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, check. A badass female main character, check. Erotic armor that has the eyes of the mechas in Tengen, check. If you want to get more hyped, I don’t even know what else I’d put in. Oh wait, Sawano Hiroyuki doing the soundtrack with Mika Kobayashi, the vocalist who does the vocals for some of the amazing Shingeki no Kyojin soundtracks. They already did a ton of great work together in SnK and I think that just raises the hype level to pretty insane levels. I know, it doesn’t look as grand as Tengen does, but Tengen didn’t look that way in the beginning either. I also noticed that in the beginning of the preview it has some 1984 vibes. As for the armor, it’s an… interesting choice. Though at this point, reason has escaped me and I’m just purely overwhelmed by excitement. It’s hard placing these first three shows because they’re all so incredibly close to each other in terms of my anticipation for each of them. I really am extremely anticipating this anime.

Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is unique even among members of the spirit world. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai. (ANN)

KyoAni doing an anime that has action scenes?!?! Couple that with dark fantasy, a more serious atmosphere, moe girls doing kickass maneuvers and we have a great hype train to hop on. The fights in Chuunibyou were far and few in between, but when they did happen, it was a joy to watch. It’s really been since Full Metal Panic!: Second Raid that KyoAni has actually done something with a decent amount of action in it. KyoAni shows are just beautiful to watch and seeing that with some supernatural elements and fantastic looking action is going to be amazing. And of course, can’t watch a KyoAni show without some moe blobs and attractive female characters. With a decade of experience now since Full Metal Panic, and some gorgeous previews, this is definitely my most anticipated new anime this season.

It’s not because of the last season of Little Busters! that it’s my second most anticipated anime of the season. I understand that like Clannad, the first season is but a prologue, a set up to the eventual emotional roller-coaster that will destroy you. I have not played the visual novel at all which will make the reviews easier to do and should provide insight that only an anime-only viewer can. I cried watching Clannad: After Story, and some say that if Clannad made you cry, then Refrain will destroy you. People have their hesitations because J.C. Staff is doing the adaptation yet again. Still, by the looks of the preview, things look to be getting extremely serious now. The first thing that took my breath away is the music. (If anyone is curious, it’s Haruka Kanata by Rita) I really love these types of songs and I just listening to that alone made me emotional. Of course, it’s Maeda Jun responsible for the music so maybe I shouldn’t be too surprised at his genius. I can already feel how impactful this anime is going to be from the preview. I really can’t wait to see if I’ll have an experience like I’ve never had watching an anime before. In the meantime, I’m going to re-watch After Story.

Are you guys ready? ARE YOU READY FOR THE ANIME OF THE YEAR ALL YEAR EVERY YEAR THAT IS NONE OTHER THAN VALVRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE?!?!! Phew, okay. I need to take a chill pill for a second, but I really can’t contain my excitement. It’s fucking VALVRAVE after all. If you haven’t seen the first season, read my review to see if it is for you. It’s absurd. It’s crazy. It’s fucking awesome. If you’ve read any of my episodic reviews, you’ll know how I feel about this anime. Heck, I guess the way I introduced it is enough of an indicator.

I just want to rise the hype level a bit further by saying that MIZUKI NANA AND TM REVOLUTION ARE DOING YET ANOTHER OPENING TOGETHER CALLED “KAKUMEI DUALISM.” (Here is a very brief CM featuring their song) Yep, Preserved Roses is absolutely amazing and this is going to be yet another one of those incredible openings. Elisa is also back to do the first ending which sounds very similar to what we got the first season. The second ED will be by Momoko Kanade who sang an insert song in episode 6. Then we have the classy suits, and the cliffhanger from last season that everyone needs to watch again before embarking on this absurd adventure once more. More ERU ERUFU, more badass mecha action, more plot twists, and more absurdities await. This is Kakumeiki Valvrave, the system that unveils the world!

Fall 2013 Anime Preview Roundup

If the anime in tier one doesn’t make you excited about this season, then anime may not be for you. Not only that, but the rankings in the second tier were very difficult to place and I’m sure you could switch some of them around and I’d still heartily agree as a lot of them seem very promising. Looking at the similarities between the top half of the anime, there are just so many action-related shows. We’re a bit lacking on the emotional side of things, but I think Refrain will do more than an excellent job of it this season. This season should be an absolute treat for those who love to see some action whether it be related to mecha, battleships, or supernatural elements. Thursday is absolutely merciless like usual though obviously VALVRAVE will take top priority.

Visually speaking, I have my eyes clearly set on the majority of the series as the previews all look great. I’m going to keep special attention to Coppelion because it reminds me so much of the visual beast that is K-Project. As for the music, the one that stands out the most out of everything has to be the first song by Rita in Refrain by far. Otherwise, Coppelion, and plenty of other shows have impressed me with the various soundtracks. Aesthetically, this season is at the top of this year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of them make it on some best soundtrack or best visuals of the year list. This season is just a treat for the senses.

Well, I’m going to try and finish a video review of Valvrave before mid-terms and this season starts bombarding me with episodes to review. This is going to be one hell of a season and hopefully some of you will be along for the ride. This’ll definitely be my busiest season since I started reviewing so it should be a good platform for me to test my skills. I hope you guys enjoyed the preview, and if you have any suggestions, questions or HYPE HYPE HYPE, feel free to post in the comments section below. Until then, get your bodies ready because this Fall season is going to be crazy. Oh, and VALVRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE!!!

ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS ON ANYTHING!

Idk, i’m pretty curious about Pupa. Gore is meh, but hopefully they’ll do more than just a simple adaptation and improve the manga or else there will only be mosaics on the aired version. Hope this doesn’t go all Blood C on us. All Guro, cheap storyline.

Gingitsune reminds me on Natsume Yuujinchou or Kamichu more than Mushishi. The MC is a child, while Ginko was an adult with a laid back, I’ve seen some shit personality. Will watch the first 2-3 eps and see how good it is.

Log Horizon? SAO the improved version maybe? As long as it doesn’t repat the same mistakes it’s original did it might be good.

Unbreakable Machine Doll! Hell Yea! I read the manga and I love it!

Nagi no Asukara.. Hmm, i’ll take your word for it. If this resembles AnoHana even a bit than it’s worth watching. I’ll try and not drop it after the first eps as it might take a while to become more serious.

Strike the Blood, the manga only has a few chapters out so I can’t say much about it. It has potential that’s a given.

Golden Time, I’m a sucker for this stuff. Also, same author as Toradora? This is going to be good.

Tokyo Ravens is funny, but a bit stereotypical. Watch it for the action, the story is a bit weak.

Little Busters! Refrain. Oh man. I think I’ll wait till the season is over before watching it in one go. Did the same with Clannad After Story. In the meantime, get the bucket ready and order a truckload of tissues.

    Valvrave!!!!!! nuff said.

BTW, tweeted this post and it didn’t unlock the movies. I think it might be a bug or something

P.S. Where is that WataMote review man. You know you want to. Come on I dare you! Watch it all in one go and try and make a review mwhahaha.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, I’m not so sure about Nagi no Asukara either though. It’s tough to say with what it has shown so far with how it’s mostly just scenery. Nagi is always nice to listen to so it’s an immediate plus for me in that respect.

I actually want to Marathon Refrain because I know it won’t be the same. Regardless, I won’t miss this opportunity to review it as I’m pretty determined to review it until the very end.

Yeah, it has been a problem with the plugin since I got it. Sadly, you’ll have to use Facebook or Google+. Sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll go report this issue to the people who made the plugin.

D: Too many other things to watch so WataMote is not going to come for a while. If I ever do a review of it, it’ll just be one huge rant.

Well, it wasn’t under production for all those years though. They really just restarted it recently as beforehand it was terminated. It does look pretty awesome now though and I’ll definitely be watching it when winter comes around.

yea true they kinda canned it but i am a sucker for big studio collaborations :D

Hoooooly shit, so many anime.. I haven’t even finished watching this season’s anime!! Hell I haven’t even finished with goddamn Valvrave. I should probably get to that, but I’m in so much wooooork D:
In the Meantime let’s go over what we have.
The first and second anime get an up yours, because I would rather watch Akeno OPPAI and Rias OPPAI!!
Pupa looks good but unfortunately it’s being animated by goddamn Studio Deen, and Deen and I have a love-hate relationship. We shall see how badly this turns out to be.
GunPla and Blazblue… eh I’ll watch them. But I will say that if you want to see Gundams fighting each other? Gundam Extreme Vs. and we shall see how much of an adaptation Blazblue will be?
Golden Time and Nagi look interesting. And when you mentioned Battleships shooting each other, Ars Nova immediately went up to second anime I want to watch. Valvrave is third, I am sorry Eru Erufu.
My favorite has to be Little Busters: Refrain. That looks intense.
Overall this season will be good. Get ready for the hype.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Refrain is certainly going to be awesome. Ars Nova actually surprised me when I read the manga. I didn’t expect what I saw to be honest.

NO VALVRAVE?!?! NO VALVRAVE?!?! BRO. GOT TO PICK UP THE PACE.

    What about Infinite Stratos 2?

    • The Atomic Dwarf

      Wait… IS2? Nice.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

In the beginning of the post, there is a note where I state that I’m not going over series that I did not watch the first season of or if I’m not interested enough to watch the first episode of the show. This is not a complete list.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

IS is basically a toned down DxD with mechas instead of magic powers.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

          Would you recommend it?

          • The Atomic Dwarf

Not really, no. The storyline is a bit weak. As for the heroines well… the only difference is that in this case all the girls except one are from different countries.

They represent what the Japanease creators thought is the stereotypical behaviour for that countries girl. And most of them are in love with the MC for the stupidest of reasons.

When I said it’s a toned down DxD, I meant the ecchi stuff. No oppai shown in their full glory :)) That and the MC’s motivation to fight is just a huge older sister complex he has, not the lust and desire Issei has shown in his epic finale.

I’m bashing this series a bit too much even though I actually like it. The anime is enjoyable but it’s more like a side dish or dessert after the big meal which is Valvrave. If you haven’t watched the first season, theres no point in watching the second. Instead go and watch WataMote :p

P.S. The mecha battles are good tho.

          • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

ALWAYS BRINGING UP THE WATAMOTE. Jeez. I’ll find time in the coming seasons to do a video review of it if I can. It’ll be a good time to bash it for all it’s worth MWAHAHAHAHAHAH.

  • zztop

Definitely agree with you on Pupa, entrav. The manga is very crudely drawn, and I don’t think this was intentional.
On the Internet, I found a TV-size audio file of Elisa’s Realism, the 1st ED of Valvrave season 2.
I also found a promo ad for Valvrave s2 on Youtube that features the Kakumei Dualism song.
Would you like me to post links to the 2 for your enjoyment, or would you rather wait till Valvrave properly airs?

A lot of good sports manga are being made in an anime.

Definitely sports fall ( no pun intended ) this year.

Truly a lot of variety in terms of the stuff coming out this season.

I do see that you’ve forgotten a few animes.

How could you forget gayballs season 2 ? I guess aside from valvrave you kind of skipped the “S2″ animes.

Log Horizon will probably be better than SAO. The MC is a support mage and not some dual wielding gary stu that can beat anyone and do anything MC like Kirito. I hope it also goes a little bit more into the SoL feel with cool adventures.

The subs probably won’t be out for a while, but it’s good to mention that Code Geass OVA 2 is coming out this fall as well as the CGI movie SPACE FUCKING PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK.

Is there anyone more baller than good ol’ captain harlock? I think not.

Man so much stuff I’m going to be watching this season, and I thought fall 2012 was a good season. I’m prepared to be blown away.

Hopefully winter season 2013-2014 won’t be so bad as last year too.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I did not “forget” to preview the anime. It’s stated at the beginning that this is not a complete preview and I won’t preview series that I will not watch the first episode of or shows that I didn’t watch the previous seasons of. I have no interest in Kuroko no Basket so I did not mention that along with IS 2 and the other shows.

Oh God, I actually forgot about Captain Harlock. Their trailers look absolutely phenomenal right now and I think their budget is like $30 million or something? I mentioned the movie for Code Geass in the locked section along with Madoka and Persona 3 by the way.

      • Evilnemesis

Hah thank you. I briefly skimmed through this post this morning before going to work so I did miss a lot. My mistake obviously!

But yeah that Harlock movie looks absolutely stellar. Rarely are CGI anime/movies ever good because Japan does not have the financial resources that Hollywood has.

Cgi can be incredibly good, but require a lot more money or else it’s really ends up being really sloppy.

A prime example of that is the Berserk movies. Man that was the worse affront I’ve seen in recent history.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

That reminds me of Blizzard’s CGI with all of their trailers for their games. They have some extremely talented artists which makes me really want a full length movie with how they’ve been making all their trailers. It’s not just recently either, they’ve had a long history of fantastic looking CGI.

CGI in games are so realistic now that I just want to see some films with that kind of budget. Pacific Rim is a good example of some badass mecha action CGI done right.

Haha, not really. I should pick up more speed once I get the video reviews out though :D

          • Disky

            You mean K or Coppelion?

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ Dream Drop ♥

K project. I don’t prejudge things that aren’t out yet.

          • Disky

But hopefully Coppelion will have better characters and a decent story. It looks super pretty O___O

    PUPA!!!!!!
I haven’t read the manga (or any reviews), but it looks my like my favorite genre (psycho-horror-fantasy), and it’s hyped like %$#&$ $#% $$ but if you say it’s shit then it has to be shit..
and fuck all .hack clones including SAO

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, I may be right about Pupa this time if the anime does turn out like the manga, but I definitely won’t be right every time so don’t always take my word for granted. I just hope they address the various problems in the manga though that’s quite unlikely. Still going to watch the first episode though.

I don’t really see the problem with anime similar to .hack. I mean, I’m sure even the writer of .hack wouldn’t want people to stop using similar concepts just because he or she made it first. I think it’s narrow minded to push aside shows like that just because it’s similar to something else. Heck, most anime made nowadays are similar to previously made anime in one way or another.

      • many names for the same noob

I trust you with pupa cuz you said you read the manga, and the manga rating is pretty low on every site I know
about .hack clones… it’s not like I don’t like them for being similar to .hack, the real reason is the way they repeat the same mistakes over and over… I forgive not being original with the story but at least make it up with something else! (SAO had production value,, only)

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Ah okay, I do agree with you on that. Too bad so many people still defend SAO for the wrong reasons. I still think we should wait and at least see the first episode before judging though as it doesn’t mean that others failed that this too will fail. I wouldn’t put my hopes high at all though.

Just glancing at the screenshot for Nagi no Asukara and I thought I was looking at a sequel to SSY! It took ten minutes for my heart rate to fall back to normal . . .

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha, sadly I didn’t feel that way. Nothing looks like SSY to me for this season :/

  • Lodda

There’s many sequel this season , like kuroko, freezing and magi
just asking, is the prequel good to watch ?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I didn’t watch Kuroko, Freezing or Magi so I’m not really sure. I do like the manga for Magi, but I can’t give a recommendation for the anime as I haven’t seen all of it.

  • Dycize

Arpeggio, Gunpla and of course VALVRAAAAAAVE are my must watch this season.
Sadly I don’t have much time anymore for many series but…
Gunpla might be surprising, but that’s because I also watched the Gunpla Builders OAVs and they’re pretty nice. With some funny scenes (Bearguy anyone?) and many badass custom made mechas! And who cares if it doesn’t make sense because it’s plastic models customized! So yeah, it’s basically a giant ad, but also mecha fan service. And I love me some mechas.
Not that Valvrave isn’t going to steal the spotlight. Because c’m’oooon. It’s Valvrave. The spotlight had to go in repairs for a whole season to be ready for October.

If they focus on the battles in Gundam Build Fighters, I’ll be totally in as there’s nothing wrong with watching some mecha action even if the characters and the story may be subpar.

YEEEEEEH VALVRAAAAAAAAAAAAVE! Haha, I really what you said about the spotlight. :)

  • yeeahbody

    PUPAAAAAAA!!! exelent :D

  • Adnae

I agree with you for almost everything, even if I don’t praise Valvrave so much (most illogical show ever)
By the way, you forgot Kyôsogiga in the awesome-looking shows ;)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I know I missed that one, but I didn’t watch the previous series so that’s why I didn’t include it.

  • Riegel

Will you do a review of the first episode of Coppelion?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yes, it’ll do it 2 days from now. A bit late I know, but I want to do Golden Time first.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Change of plans, I’m going to be doing episodes 1-2 of Coppelion together.
