Again, it’s one of those episodes with not too much to comment about as it is going through its paces as a slice of life anime with some fabulous swimming. We do, however, get a hint of the direction that Free! may go this season which may either be something that this anime needs to change up the pace, or it’ll be something minor that sets up the relationships between everyone for later on.

Free! Episode 5 Impressions

free-5-1-matsuoka-gou

Matsuoka Kou surprised

DID YOU FIND PORN?

… Please.

O_O

That looks really dangerous.

Do I hear squealing in the background?

Rei win.

Nanase Haruka

It’s not Haruka’s episode, but hey, EVERYONE NEEDS SOME HARUKA.

I had some pizza today. It was really greasy.

Sasabe Gorou

Why you no Iwatobi-chan?!

It really hasn’t taken long for Rei to get used to being in the group and that’s due to just how open everyone is. Free! has mostly focused on Haruka and Rin for the past quarter of the season, and it’s obvious that Nagisa is that lively, air-head character that KyoAni likes to include so much. All that leaves is Makoto which I was commenting on in previous episodes about his lack of development. It appears that KyoAni knows exactly where to fill the gaps as they do just that with a little bit of backstory in this extremely relaxing episode.

Tachibana Makoto wide eyed

O____O

So, concerns are being put forth by Haruka about going to the ocean. Apparently, a painful past lies behind Makoto’s always mellow behavior. If I had to guess, the most obvious thing that could have happened is that someone died, or someone got injured, or something along those lines. Of course, having seeing part of that, it’s clear we’re going to be seeing that affect his decision making, and maybe his character in the upcoming episodes. Growth or not, it should make for some at least exciting scenes that spices up the atmosphere.

Amakata Miho

So no swimsuit?

Ryuugazaki Rei sick

Haruka is really going to kill you if you don’t accept the damn mackerel.

Matsuoka Rin mackerel

SEE? ACCEPT IT.

MUSCLES.

NOT HARD FOR MUSCLES.

Ryuugazaki Rei moe

MOE?

UHHH… So, what happens if you go into that?

Ryuugazaki Rei running

MANLY RUNNING WIN.

Dude, just stop being a tsundere.

Is Makoto like bright red or is it just me? Does he have a thing for pineapples?

NO NAUGHTY THINKING GIRLS.

OKAY, MAYBE SOME NAUGHTY THINKING.

As seen by last week’s preview, Rin is here! What a surprise! Well, let’s leave him aside for now and discuss the group and their prospects on the competition. Everyone is obviously super muscular and beyond the normal human capabilities that we know because they are the fabulous bishounen that surpasses the foundations of logic with their super muscular and beyond the normal capabilities bodies. Clearly, they need to level up yet again to be beyond the level they were at before which was already super muscular. What do you even call them after that? Super duper muscular? Shit, I don’t even know, but they’ll do whatever they can to all the muscles they can because they’re FABULOUS.

Ah, so calm.

ESCAPED FROM YOUR FINGERS. MWAHAHAHA.

O_____O

Ryuugazaki Rei drowning

Those water effects are really nice.

INTENSE MANLY RESCUE TO COME. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.

To be a bit more serious, the last part is where the somewhat unexpected happens, at least, I wouldn’t have expected it from the outset of the first episode even though I had a feeling something like this would happen this episode. Indeed, Free! takes a darker turn quick to make use of Makoto’s past that we are introduced this episode. Now, I highly doubt this will end up being something dreadful as this just isn’t that kind of anime, but it will make way for some development on Makoto’s side that I’ve been wanting to see. Moreover, from the preview, the other characters are going to enter the fray and things will get even more hectic. Whether Rin will come or not is unknown, but when they do make it out of this, I do expect their bonds to be that much stronger. Well, they wanted training, and this is going to be a life threatening challenge.

Free! Episode 5 Review

Overall, there’s nothing spectacular about this episode; everything is really ordinary except for the ending but that alone does not make this episode good. There will always be episodes like this that has to set up the future ones and for what it does, I think this episode does it just fine. One thing I have to say again is that Free! has a very nice pace. It never feels rushed or too slow; things move at the pace it needs to which is not a huge surprise considering it’s Kyoto Animations. I’m hoping that some real growth and struggle will be put forth with this new conflict and it’s not just something minor that is brushed aside easily. Or, could it be darker than I think it is? Could KyoAni trying to surprise us with something different?

haha ya I can’t wait either, its so nice of Kyotoani to change the pacing, when I was beginning to get bored. (CLaps for them)

      The manly rescue, it’ll happen.

  • Flaiboy

I welcome the change of pace, too. Would be nice to see something darker, if for no other reason than to jar Haru out of his silent stupor and force him to give answers to questions that are longer than 2 or 3 words . . . is it that he processes all his emotions and thoughts internally before saying anything?

I was hoping to get to see Gou in a bikini . . . 8(

Love the whole “hidden past” to Miho’s character. The way they’re building it up it better be something outrageous or I’ll be disappointed.

Flaiboy, this is the time for extreme MUSCULAR PROWESS. There’s NO ROOM FOR EROTIC FEMALE FANSERVICE. IT’S MANLY RESCUE TIME.

      • Flaiboy

Dude, there is ALWAYS room for female eroticism!

          Bro, this is Free!.

        • omgITSorange

I agree that there is always room for female eroticism, BUT NOW IS NOT THE TIME! Why? BECAUSE FREE, THAT’S WHY!

  • http://thehugeanimefan.blogspot.com/ Cassandra @The Huge Anime Fan

I actually didn’t expect Rei to set off by himself and end up drowning with the end of the episode. Your right I really felt toward the end it got dark and serious and with Makoto’s past.

Seriously hope Rin shows up to the rescue too along with the others.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m pretty sure things will end up well. Well, unless KyoAni knows we all think that way and end up pulling- Nah, the fujoshis will be livid. They won’t risk their studio being burnt down.

  • zztop

Hey entrav, just thought I’d leave you with a guide to the facial expressions of Free! :

    Haruka : Usually ( -_- ) , when water/pool mentioned becomes ─=≡Σ((( つ•̀ω•́)つ

    Makoto : (^_^)

    Nagisa : (^ω^) with a hint of ( `ω´ )

Rei: Usually -o-o- but can also become (╯°□°)╯なぜ━━━━━━!!!!!

    Rin: (▼へ▼)

Gou: キタ━━━(゜∀゜)/━━━!!!!! when muscles are displayed

LOL. NICE FACES. Maybe I’ll use them :)

Hey Entrav, I was on Crunchyroll this morning and saw this show called “Unbreakable Machine Doll” under the news section. It caught my eye because of the animation quality and artwork, but I just want to know, have you heard of it? There seems to be quite a buzz over it.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yes, I heard about it and I actually read the manga quite a bit of it around a year ago. There’s an anime adaptation this fall I believe, so that’s undoubtedly going to stir some things up but I wouldn’t say there’s that much buzz surrounding it. Pretty ordinary in my opinion.

  • Jacob

What’s ur opinion on watamote? Thinking about picking it up.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Very very awkward, but you have to really find out yourself if you like those types of shows. It’s definitely unique in how disturbingly awkward the main character is though.

    • Flaiboy

Just dropped it last week. To me, the lead character is about as annoying as a whiny, crying baby from which you can’t get away. I liked the first episode, but it’s just the same thing over and over again with each new episode. It just stopped being funny. I guess I expected a little growth as the series continued with laughs along the way. If you want to see a chronology of every awkward social circumstance involving a very socially awkward girl . . . go for it.

    • Jacob

Personally I thought it was very intriguing of an anime just because of its uniqueness. But believe me I read the manga.. And there are some terribly awkward scenes yet to one

  • Miss_Madness

This might be weird but half the fanbase was actually expecting something really bad to happen in this episode. It turns out the light novel High Speed give a lot more background into the characters pasts. Apparently that thing with Makoto and water was going to be brought up in one of the episode. We just didn’t know how soon or what.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Oh, I forgot that it was based off of High Speed. I knew that Makoto was going to get a backstory sooner or later, but maybe not something of this caliber.

  • Sammy Lee

My first review is finally up come check it out!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It looks pretty good. It actually really reminds me of Gigguk’s reviews (yes it’s a compliment). One thing I’d advise against is spoilers like the part at 3:53 with the wave. It is not a direct spoiler, but it is taking a pretty big part of a character’s growth. I’m sure many would prefer to see the wave for themselves rather than having it randomly shown. Granted, that’s a very small complaint and some people won’t mind either way. Personally, I’m very wary of spoilers so that’s why I’m always so on guard about them.

The flow of the review is pretty nice as well. And to be honest, there’s not really a lot I can comment on because it’s your review and whatever I say can easily be countered by valid points on your side as your way isn’t “wrong,” but just different. (Remember to add your annotations) Again, I’m not sure if naming your video that way is the best way to get views, but that’ll require more research and more experimentation.

      • Sammy Lee

Thanks for the reply, i will be more wary of spoilers.I dont really have much to say this time so im just gonna go with Thanks :)

    • The Atomic Dwarf

Nice review! Congrats on getting refered to by Arkada. Your sub rate will go up fast.

Oh and yea, Yukinon wave! HNGGG Though it’s a minor spoiler it will make people who haven’t watched this anime a bit curious. Consider it a good bait to catch a whole ocean of Moe loving fish!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Sick, you got referred to by Arkada. That should help you a lot!

      • Sammy Lee

Im just happy he even looked at my video lol

  • Irenesharda

I don’t know how this show does it, but it seems to one up itself ever episode! If I had known Free! was going to be this good, I would have hyped it with the rest.

While this episode didn’t have much fanservice (yes, MUSCLES are nice, but after awhile they seem a little matter-of-fact) but it made up for that in plot as we go into the most unexplored of our MCs: Makoto. We find out that like many quiet, motherly, optimistic guys in anime, Makoto has a past, and it looks like it has to do with something that happened in the ocean. We don’t get much into what truly happened other than a single short flashback and foreboding hints from Haru and Rin. All this time we can see something’s going on, but Makoto has emotional shields of steel and thus continues to say and show that nothing’s wrong. However, you can bet that those shields are going to crack eventually, especially in light of this episodes amazing ending. But, more on that later.

First, let’s go back to Rin. It seems that of course, Rin’s school happens to be practicing on the exact same island as Haru and friends. However, because of the difference in funds and the level of school, the quartet’s swim team is camping out on the beach and train in the ocean, while Rin’s school use the professional pool. However, we learn that the Shark is not stern and emo all the time. While meeting with his sister, he’s expresses worry for his ex-teammates, especially Makoto, who it seems Rin knows about as well. We also see that Rin is actually pretty caring of his younger sister, which is also really nice to know about his character. It seems that Rin the Shark is really a big softy sometimes. Awww… ^_^

Now from the preview, I thought this was going to be your average generic beach episode, however, I was so wrong. We get a lot of development for our characters as they do their training for their first competition. This is especially for Rei and Makoto. As Rei being the newest swimmer, he is definitely not as good as the others. Unfortunately he has a lot of that male pride and is determined not to slow down his teammates. And this is what leads to the ending climax/cliffhanger.

Despite his teammates encouragement, Rei feels ashamed of his small progress and wants to practice more. So after everyone is sleep, he goes to practice swimming alone in the ocean….
    0_0

Okay, First, no one should really swim alone unless they truly know what they are doing, and even then, definitely not alone in open water where anything can happen.

Second, if one can help it, one should NEVER swim in the ocean at night and DEFINITELY not alone. Not only is the fact that the ocean looks like black ink at night and you can hardly see anything, there are extremely dangerous currents that you might not notice till to late, and if alone, there will be nobody help you if an accident should occur. Also, there is the fact that many sea animals are nocturnal hunters, that will add even more added danger. Olympic swimmers don’t swim alone in the ocean at night, let alone a first time beginner.

And lastly, was it really that hard to actually check the weather report? Maybe it was a sudden thunderstorm, but it might have helped to look at the weather channel.

Well, long story short, Rei messed up though with the best of intentions, and gets trapped in the ocean during a storm, with very few swimming skills. Makoto wakes up and finds his new friend in danger and without a second thought, goes to his rescue. How will this end for the two we can only guess as Makoto will have to face his past fears in order to save Rei from drowning. I can only hope that Haruka, Nagisa, and Rin will come in to save them as well.

I give this episode a 9/10, truly an excellent episode. I can’t wait to see the next one.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I got deceived by the preview as well. Looks like we’ll be in for a treat as the preview for the next episode looks quite intense as well. I couldn’t help but feel that something bad was about to happen as soon as I saw Rei struggling and then going to swim in the dark. It was pretty nonsensical for him to swim in an ocean in the dark when he has just started to learn how to swim. Oh well, it should lead to some exciting developments!

This was like the complete opposite of ep 4… and the contrast was surprisingly pleasant. I like a little seriousness because too much manservice/comedy can get boring. The ending was so sudden though *black screen -> ED * I know I should have – and did – expect that to happen but I still reacted strongly and out loud.
    Me: “WAT!”

Dat face. Yep, I was pretty surprised that things would be that serious.

  • Evilnemesis

I wonder if KyoAni will have the balls ( no pun intended ) to do man-to-man CPR action.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

God dammit, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that. That’s genius. Even guys won’t be pissed off because it’ll be an intense situation and with the fanservice as well… Oh gawd. I think we may…

      • Evilnemesis

        It’s possible.

Although I must say that as someone who was trained with First Aid and CPR I always cringed in the way it’s portrayed in fiction.

If you’re alone doing CPR and you don’t have any tools it’s better to just skip artificial respiration completely and solely perform chest compressions since a person cannot do both at the same time.

I know I’m way too serious here and obviously the “CPR and THE GIRL/BOY WAKES UP MIDWAY” is just common plot device, but it still irks me.

My daughter and I watched this episode again last night and mouth-to-mouth was the first thing I thought of after seeing the PV. And yes, I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me earlier, either!
