When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace Episode 7 Review

Well, it’s been quite some time since I did one of these episode reviews. I’ll probably make a post/video later on talking to you all about my plans for the future, and how I feel about the state of my site, my Youtube channel, and how I feel about reviewing anime going forward. That’ll come later, but for now, I cannot miss out on this opportunity to talk about this episode of Inou-Battle. There’s quite a bit to go over, so let’s get right to it.

Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de Episode 7 Review

I don’t think we can start this review without saying how great of a job Saori Hayami did voice acting Hakoto’s Juggernaut Mode rant. As expect of The Lord One True God Tatsuya Stu‘s glorious imouto, she does a phenomenal job capturing the frustration of Hatoko as she finally breaks down after years of dealing with Andou’s chuunibyou. It really is the straw that broke the camels back, and we can only be thankful that The One True God Tatsuya Stu blessed the show with His powers to make the scene that much more impressive. I almost never talk about voice acting most of the time in non-dubbed anime since Japanese voice actors do fantastic work almost all the time. There are really few instances where voice acting is lackluster, so a lot of the time I skim over praising their excellent work as I’m sure most people realize their excellence without me even mentioning it. There are, however, certain times when voice actors go above and beyond even that level of expertise. An example aside from the one in this episode is in episode 11 of Little Busters! Refrain (spoilers obviously) where Hikaru Midorikawa completely knocked it out of the park with his astounding voice acting. Such displays of skill definitely cannot go unmentioned. And although the situation isn’t as ripe for being as emotionally impactful in this episode of Inou-Battle compared to episode 11 of Little Busters! Refrain, Saori Hayami makes the most of it. Her impassioned tirade properly captures just how much Hatoko cares about Andou, and how much that care has made her confused, angry, and upset about everything between her and Andou. She completely dismantles Andou’s acts of chuunibyou into chunks with her logic as Andou sees for the first time how Hatoko really views his actions. Bravo. Fantastic work. I cannot imagine how many takes that took to get everything just right. That aside, let’s try to look at things a bit more closely by starting from the beginning.

The very first part of the episode shows a flashback of Andou helping Hatoko, and as you’d expect from a super-chuunibyou chuuni like Andou, his chuunibyou stretches back for quite some time. (For all we know, he’s being completely next level here in the fifth grade or something ahead of his time being a chuunibyou until time caught up with him and made him look like someone will a mental illness. Because you know, “chuunibyou” when translated is “8th grade syndrome” or- I’ll just stop.) The most important thing to note from the flashback is how Hatoko reacts to Andou’s chuunibyouness. If you liken this to how she acts even after they have grown up, you’ll notice that she’s acting in more or less the same manner. That is, she takes Andou’s chuunibyou seriously. (You can see an instance of this in the very first episode when she attempts to put out Andou’s BURNING ARM OF… Errr. DARK FLAME MASTA…) What seemed to be just a gag turned out to be something a bit more meaningful than that. Why is this important? Because the way she acts is not how one who understand chuunibyou would react. The way Tomoyo and Sayumi act is much more along the lines of how one who knows what chuunibyou really is would act towards Andou’s embarrassing actions. Since she doesn’t understand the essence of chuunibyou, she feels this constant barrier between her and Andou even though she really likes him. In real life this will happen. It’ll happen quite often. You will have hobbies or interests that your partner or friends or family don’t understand. That’s why you talk to different people about different things. I mean, you wouldn’t go up to your friend who doesn’t even know the difference between anime and hentai and start talking about the latest episode of Cross Ange and how Sunrise is the innovator of the millenium.

The difference between Andou’s case and ordinary cases lies in how deeply rooted his chuunibyou is and how devoted he is to it. Even though, someone like me for example, loves anime, write reviews about anime, and does a lot of things revolving around anime, it’s not the sole thing I do. Andou’s life, however, revolves so heavily around chuunibyou that, if you want to pursue a relationship with him, you would have to deal with his chuunibyou no matter what. Not being able to understand chuunibyou is the same as not being able to understand Andou and Hatoko can’t take that because as someone who likes Andou, she naturally wants to understand him. That’s why she broke down. Of course, a lot of the fault lies in Andou. As good of a protagonist as he is, and as much as he tries to consider the feelings of his friends into account, he’s still a teenager. He didn’t realize that Hatoko does have a limit and that he’s been pushing that limit for quite some time. He didn’t understand that she was being hurt by the fact that she doesn’t understand why he acts the way he does. He took her presence as well as her air-headed behavior towards him for granted not thinking of the long term consequences. He didn’t and still doesn’t understand that Hatoko likes him which is why him saying that she “wouldn’t understand” hurt her and became the catalyst for her breakdown. Perhaps most of all, he didn’t understand that some people won’t “get” his hobby unless he tries to help them understand. That, or some people won’t understand it and that he needs to properly deal with it so they won’t be hurt by him from their inability to do so. Hatoko has persevered for so long, but Andou’s few words of rejection are now enough to break her. Isn’t this portrayal nice? Isn’t it refreshing how a male lead’s denseness is actually portrayed well? The major aspect that makes this form of denseness acceptable and believable, at least to me, is simply because it isn’t so painfully obvious that he’s being dense. At least, not with the perspective that we’re given. He’s not disregarding a girl’s feelings in blatantly irritating manners or something along those lines. He’s simply being himself. He may be a chuunibyou, but he is somewhat aware and tries his best to think things through. Looking back at some of the episodes, you can see the show set up this conflict with how Hatoko acts so dense towards Andou’s chuunibyouness. (The nicknames in episode 2, the guitar in episode 5, and so on.) Even with those instances though, some of you may find her outburst to be too sudden. You may think it would have been better for them to develop this conflict more. To some extent, I agree, but I think the suddenness of it is the point. We see the story through Andou’s eyes, and like him, we too are mostly oblivious to Hatoko’s feelings about Andou’s chuunibyouness. Just like Andou, we, as the audience, didn’t expect this and are shaken up by all of this as well. You can tell that a good amount of thought was put into setting this particular arc up and executing it.

One other noteworthy part in this episode is when KIRYUU HELDKAISER LUCI FIRST (yeah, that’s right, bitches. CHUUNI IT UP.) talks about chuunibyou. As he says, if everyone understood the essence of chuunibyou then it wouldn’t exactly be as special as it is down. It’s because it’s strange, incomprehensible, and difficult to understand that makes chuunibyou, well, chuunibyou. Look back to episode three where KIRYUU HELDKAISER LUCI FIRST says that the “unresolved paradox of self-denial and self-affirmation is the root of chuunibyou.” In this episode, KIRYUU HELDKAISER LUCI FIRST says the same to Hatoko albeit in a slightly different way. People with chuunibyou seek to be understood because being completely alone wouldn’t bring about any fun. If no one played along then it’d be boring. At the same time, they don’t want everyone to play along. They still want some to look at what they do with furrowed brows since it affirms their self-denial. They know they’re not themselves. They know they’re not normal to those people. They yearn for that kind of denial as well. From this, we move on to the topic of happiness. Now, people will obviously have different perspectives on what happiness is. Some say it’s chemical reactions in a body when exposed to certain stimuli, others it’s when they are surrounded with people they like being with, others will say stability, others will say freedom, others will say it is when they view themselves to be significant, and still others will say other things. I will not attempt to look at happiness from those wide array of different perspectives nor will I delve into the various philosophies of happiness as the topic would be too much of a tangent and others can offer better answers than I can. What I will say, however, is that Inou-Battle defining happiness as being “chosen” is fitting for the show. It’s fitting because when someone has chuunibyou, that person will often hold the belief that he or she is the “chosen one.” That’s part of what being chuunibyou is after all. It’s to be someone more significant and/or powerful compared to the ordinary person. To Hatoko, to be chosen has a romantic context, but to someone like Andou, it has a chuunibyou context. Being true to himself is what makes him happy. Being “chosen” can be interpreted in different ways. There’s a nice parallel between what KIRYUU HELDKAISER LUCI FIRST says about happiness and what is actually the case in this anime.

Overall, I’m honestly very impressed. I will definitely be making a video for this show recommending it to others if it continues like this. Not only is the Andou’s chuunibyou entertaining to see, but this show has delved into more serious topics successfully relating it to the various events throughout the episodes. Although talking about such topics can usually get a bit pretentious, Inou-Battle handles them well by making them relevant to the relationships between the characters, their backgrounds, and so on. To put it simply, this anime has decent writing which can be sadly kind of rare especially when it comes to light novels. In my preview, I thought that the more serious parts in the first chapter of the manga was interesting, but also thought that it wouldn’t be something the show would focus on all too much. Thankfully, that hasn’t been the case at all which makes this anime a good bit different from the typical slice of life anime out there. There are more things I could say such as how TRIGGER is doing a great job animating this and more, but I think I’ll save my broader opinions of the overall show for some other time. This is definitely one of those shows that exceeded my original expectations, so hopefully it’ll continue this way until the end. Oh, and for those of you who follow my reviews, please do not hope for many more episode reviews in the coming weeks. Things are going to be very busy, so I cannot guarantee an episode review every week. Again, I’ll give you all an update on what I’ll be doing in the future sometime later. Thanks a lot for reading! I hope you enjoyed, and may The Conqueror of Chaos be with you!

Is no-one excited over the ending?!
Not that the rest of the episode was bad; it was good for all the reasons you mentioned and more. But I do think that the arrival of an actual physical, superpowered opponent is worth at least a declaration of anticipation.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

YOU MEAN THE ARRIVAL OF THE CUTE BLUSHING LOLI?

Well, it was foreshadowed previously that KIRYUU HELDKAISER LUCI FIRST has special powers (not to mention the opening) so people were kind of expecting it which is why they aren’t really talking about it. I think people will talk more about it when they actually show their special powers and they go head to head. That’ll be something.

  • Cytrus

I don’t think this series is particularly good (especially not in this great season), but Hayami was absolutely overwhelming in this episode. Not only was the overall flow incredible, but even the construction of individual phrases (how her tone hardens at “[jibun no] kotoba de katatte yo”, changes between “oshieru nara” and “chanto oshiete yo”, or… everything else, for that matter).

    • niknasr

If you are a fan of harem genre like me, you will find this at the top of its genre.. It actually have a decent story, characters and plot that is really a rare for this genre.. If it was me, I will rate it higher than ‘pretty good’ that entrav rated, because it is such a rare gem in this genre and because it deserved it, of course..

      • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Hey man, I said it’s “pretty great.” THERE’S A DIFFERENCE.

In all seriousness, (though I am serious about there being a difference between “good” and “great”) I originally wrote “great,” but thought I’d tone it down a bit for now since it’s not quite over just yet.

        • niknasr

Oops, sorry man.. My bad.. But about time they got into some major arc.. Although I love the fact they didn’t used their power in a ‘cliche action’ way, I seriously want to see how their power works when they fighting because I see this series as an ambitious one.. But it still got high marks from me even from its SoL scene..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I forgot to clarify this in the post, but the reason why I think this show is “pretty great” is because I’m comparing it to other shows in the harem romcom genre. Obviously, if you compare it to shows like Mushishi, SSY, and other shows that people in general say are great, this wouldn’t be able to stand up to such praise. However, compared to other harem romcom anime, I can say that it’s at the very least somewhat special. When it comes to shows like this I view it from a more… relative standpoint. Moreover, since something so subjective like the entertainment value of chuunibyou being one of the core aspects that make up this anime, opinions are going to differ. I just think the thought put to these character arcs, the overall writing, and the cast as a whole are decent. Sadly, to find such a combination is a bit difficult in the harem romcom genre.

Also I heard that Hayami did the whole rant in only one take. She’s got skills.

      Thank you!

Well, if she did then holy shit that’s impressive. I do still doubt that though. Even if she did get the script in advance and practiced over and over again before doing the take (which she definitely did regardless of whether it took her one take or not), with a rant of this length permeated with words like “excalibur” and words like that, I’d imagine she’d screw up at least once. Then again, the voice actors in Japan are crazy good, so I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.

I heard from someone who said the anime’s official twitter account said it. I don’t have the necessary Japanese skills to confirm but that’s what I heard. Sounds possible to me =D

Talking about the lord Tatsuya Stu, recently he rose above the other ‘fake’ male MC to be in ranking number five in ‘Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi’ although he cannot beat the virtue of Hikigaya Hachiman and the one who possessed the ‘Hand of God’ Kamijou Touma.. It’s quite sadden his bible and THE Imouto didn’t made out the list but it showed that he didn’t even need his bible to rose in ranking..

Hi Entrav! Please forgive my late involvement to the discussion . . . I don’t watch much of what you blog about recently so whenever I find commonality I want to jump in!

You may be surprised to learn that I’m watching this show cuz this genre is sort of outside my usual preference. This is my brain-candy show for this season and I’m really glad I’m watching it. Just like Chu2koi this show makes me laugh in spite of myself. I usually spend the 20 minutes watching with a smile plastered to my face.

I think they set up the rage moment well, foreshadowing it from two episodes back where Hatoko catches sight of Andou and Tomoyo together. I think that’s the catalyst for the chain reaction rage that she goes on. She is afraid of losing Andou completely. She feels so much for him and yet cannot understand him. That thread of connection to him is so thin after years of trying that all it takes is for a bit of jealousy to creep in to create fear of losing any connection to him at all. She was finally being honest with herself and with Andou. She wasn’t mad at him, per se, she was just hurting so much inside that it finally broke out.

I loved it! That’s what happens when a literal, rational, paint-within-the-lines sort of person has to deal with chuuni. Notice that when she was asking Andou what he would like her to prepare for dinner that she wanted a specific answer?

    Great blog post!

Don’t worry about it. You can reply anytime. I read the comments regardless of recency.

Same here, these kinds of shows do make me smile throughout. Gochuumon, Kiniro Mosaic, Non Non Biyori, and shows like that have all done that to me. It’s great. Anime is an exceptional medium for this sort of thing.

Ah yes, I actually forgot to mention the relationship of Andou of Tomoyo altogether since I was so focused on talking about Hatoko and Andou. Definitely a key factor as well.

I can totally see this being the reaction of someone who doesn’t “get” chuunibyou. Heck, if I talked to a good friend about anime all the time while he or she didn’t know anything about it (while somehow being able to stick with me for so long)… it wouldn’t be very pleasant.

      Thanks for reading!

imo, Garo is also pretty awesome and I’d suggest you give a shot at least up to episode 4

well after watching the first episode of this series, I can’t really say i was too interested because I kinda felt it was a tad boring and melodramatic. Maybe it is not a series for me or perhaps I was not really in a good mood while watching it, but either way I would keep this on hold for now.
