From losing her way to regaining it, Ryuuko faces foes with a ferocity like never before. As powerful as she is, she’s not exactly in complete control of her emotions unlike Satsuki. One of her greatest weaknesses and her greatest strengths is Mako’s presence. So far, it has gone well, but it’s becoming increasingly more dangerous as Ryuuko deals with more threatening foes.

Mako has always played the role of saving Ryuuko. Well, at least encouraging her to an extent where she wins, and bringing some humor to the series as well. The question is, will it continue this way for the second half of the series? The show continuously highlights the strength of her intervention. Ryuuko appears to lose, Mako intervenes, and she wins except for the fight with Sanageyama. We’ve been conditioned to expect her to intervene, and it’s been a joy of some sorts for some people as her interventions can be in and of themselves entertaining to watch. With how Trigger has thrown things out of whack with the revelation of the scissors, Ragyou, and so on, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Mako’s role change as the overall story shifts in a new direction. And maybe it’s because we’ve been conditioned to expect something from her that it would be more impactful if something unexpected happens with her usual interventions. Actually, her intervention this time alarmed me as I thought she was going to be struck down. It makes me think that the anticipation of her intervention not working as usual can also add some tension to these interventions themselves even if Trigger continues Mako’s role as is.

If you’re waiting for some Ryuuko and Satsuki teamwork, you’re probably going to have to wait for some time. Now that the truth is out that Satsuki told Nui to investigate Dr. Matoi, the relationship between the two is not much better than it was before. However, Ryuuko does not completely blame Satsuki for her father’s death as she probably thinks it was not exactly her plan to outright kill Dr. Matoi. Even so, we’re still as clueless as Ryuuko because Satsuki’s true objective is much further than what has been explicitly stated. A good clue would be how Satsuki views her mother. We can guess they’re not exactly on the most friendly terms as she doesn’t even call her “mother,” but rather, “that woman.” As such, my first thought is that she wishes to gain enough power to be able to stand up against her mother and in order to do so, perfecting her uniforms and her army of students is necessary. What I don’t understand is how she doesn’t really care too much about the scissors. I would have at least expected Satsuki to take the one Nui has if she were the one who sent her, but she didn’t. Is it because her sword is more than enough? But then why would she leave it in the hands of someone she doesn’t exactly trust? The only reason I can come up with is that she didn’t really have a choice as Nui wanted it for herself.

Kill la Kill Episode 12 Review

I must first of all say that Ryuuko’s monstrous berserk form is quite a sight to behold. I honestly did not expect her to be that… crazy looking with her head not even on where it’s supposed to be. Jeez, that’s creepy. Anyways, you can notice that Trigger is putting some budget into this episode and it shows. It’s by no means spectacular, but it’s a pretty large improvement compared to some previous episodes, and if I can notice it, then it’s quite an improvement. I’ve always appreciated Kill la Kill’s art style as it adds to the over the top aspect very well. Also, while they don’t have much budget, the fights are still well choreographed with enough random bits here and there, such as Mako swimming in the ocean of… awesomeness, that it’s still a delight to watch. Then there are the tiny bits of humor here and there that I can also appreciate. For example, the “talk” between Gamagoori and Mako, and how the monstrous Ryuuko tries to shove Mako off only for her to jump back to hug her with startling quickness all contribute to the enjoyment however little they may be on their own. It’s just something about the way everything is presented that watching Kill la Kill makes me smile every episode.

Not quite fair to compare the two. They are quite different.

I hear Kill la Kill will only air its next episode on Jan 10, 2 weeks from now, possibly to make room for Christmas + New Year specials on Japanese TV.

Also, have a merry Strike the Blood Christmas, courtesy of the girls!: http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/638783

Yep. It’s going to be a while.

      Strike the Blood girls stronk.

      • EvilNemesis

Strike the Blood is such a cookie cutter shounen, but it’s just the girls are so loveable that they just save the show/manga.

Also loved this episode, and laugh at the end. “Battlefield trip”

Dat school trip to conquer all the other school, fucking genius.

Totally agreed. With each new arc a new “best girl” comes up. I do not know another show that makes me so confused as to which girl I view to be the best. Though, I’ll say it for this arc at least. LA FOLIA BEST GIRL.
