It’s finally here. The moment many of us have been waiting for has finally come. I’ve been saying how not a lot has progressed in the past sixteen episodes of this anime and how it lacks ambition story-wise, but this is the point where TRIGGER can turn everything around and deliver an ambitious final stretch of episodes.

Kiryuuin Satsuki determined

GET IMPALED.

To Ryuuko, this act of betrayal is beyond shocking. Ryuuko has been fighting to avenge her father this whole time, and yet Satsuki doesn’t hesitate for a second to impale Ragyou and spray her blood for all to see. But what does that mean from Satsuki’s perspective? What about the instances in episode 7 and other episodes where she called the people beneath her, or more precisely, human beings “pigs?” Isn’t her mother carrying out her words and is taming those “pigs in human clothing?” Well, there are a few perspectives to take with this. The first is that, while she still view people to be “pigs in human clothing,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that she thinks it’s all they ever can and will become. For example, her affection towards the people close to her makes it clear that she doesn’t view everyone but herself that way. It’s probably the case that Satsuki wants to take control of people’s lives so that she can steer them in the “right direction.” She thinks she knows what’s better for them more than they do for themselves. So while she is cruel, she is like the parent that guides the children to make sure they don’t eat those delicious cookies and have their proper serving of vegetables and fruits.

Another perspective you can take is that she’s this way to train her academy so they can stand up to Ragyou. Without taking certain extreme means to achieve this end, there’s probably no way Satsuki would stand a chance. Therefore, she decided to take on this role to make certain that Honnouji Academy is as strong as it could be with the mindset that the end will meet the means. In the process, she is steeling herself against her eventual encounter with Ragyou by playing this role. Okay, it’s probably a mix of both perspectives, but it’s obvious that Satsuki will reveal her just intentions soon so that Ryuuko realizes that she’s not the real antagonist of the series. To us this has been clear since the beginning of the series, but to not to Ryuuko. Satsuki is making it very clear to Ryuuko through her actions who the real enemy is, and once Ryuuko sees that the Elite 4 are fighting Nui… Still, it’s not as if Satsuki and Ryuuko are really going to see eye to eye or anything. It’s been shown throughout the series that the two are severe contrasts of one another. They’ll just set a temporary truce. Satsuki will bow down to no one, and she’ll make sure that those pigs in human clothing don’t bow down to anyone other than herself.

Kill la Kill Episode 17 Review

We all saw this coming. For some reason, I actually had a feeling that Satsuki was going to stab Ragyou in the back before it happened. Nonetheless, this is an example of the surprise of execution rather than the surprise of the plot twist. It’s very satisfying to see Satsuki finally stab the pompous clown of a mother and impale her so that blood spews everywhere while announcing her rebellion with extreme resolve. This is just one of the many reasons why Satsuki is a far more enthralling character than Ryuuko ever will be and why I think the series could have benefited from taking her perspective more often. Ryuuko charges head on to avenge her father while Satsuki takes a more calculated approach ready to bear the burden of being a cruel leader in order to realize her ambitions. It doesn’t even matter if Satsuki’s true motivation is to free humanity from Life Fibers or if it’s out of revenge. The way she goes about dealing with everything is, at least in my opinion, far more interesting than how Ryuuko deals with her father’s death. I still have the same problems I did the last time I reviewed Kill la Kill because this is simply the beginning of the end. Will TRIGGER be able to deliver the mind-blowing twists or a compelling enough story in these last seven episodes? Will the intensity continue to climb so that a satisfying climax can be realized? Will Ragyou be an interesting enough of an antagonist? We can only hope.

Hehehe – the review we’ve all been waiting for is here :)
I hadn’t thought of the possibility of Tsumugu being Ryoko’s actual father… That would make Dr Matoi her grandfather – which would make more sense ’cause why da #$@&%!/ is he so old?!

Also saw the plot twist coming, but as you said, the execution made it more surprising. And Ragyo’s entry – HOLY WOW. How’d she even do that? SATSUKI DON’T NEED DAT STYLE – SHE’S ABOVE THAT.

It seems more likely to me that Tsumugu is Ryuuko’s brother. Not sure why I feel that way though. Just a hunch.

RAGYOU NEEDS TO STOP BEING SO SHINY. SATSUKI-SAMA WILL PUT HER IN HER PLACE.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

There is a theory floating around on the internet that the woman who died in the experiments was actually Ryuuko’s mother. So that makes Tsugumu her uncle and Dr. Matoi her adoptive farther maybe. So where does Mikisugi fit in this formula?
This episode’s twist was predictable but EPIC nonetheless. Now I’m just waiting for the fated GamaXMako moment.

Wow. That review was SUPER short. Probably the shortest review I’ve ever read on this site.
    And I understand why.
This show. This show, this show, this show…
    The writer isn’t unambitious as episode 3 reveals. It’s worse. He’s a freaking cock-tease.
This show had SOOOO many chances to be great. So many times it set itself up to go places that would make us actually care about what was happening to the characters while wow-ing us in the process.
I mean look how episode 16 ended, with a standoff between Tsumugu and Ryuuko. How does this episode sort that out? By making Mako 9who has becme an overdone joke at this point) interrupt.
Classic cock-tease, classic “Kill la Kill”.
I can’t even hold Trigger responsible. I just hope for their next project they pick a writer who actually knows restraint and balance.
I’m just curious as to how it’ll end. That’s pretty much all that’s keeping me watching right now.
It could have been such a great show…

This is FAR from the shortest review I’ve written. It’s 750 words. Sure, most of my recent ones have been around at least 1,000, but I’ve already said my complaints in previous reviews so I’d just be repeating myself if I wrote any more.

Well, if you don’t like the writing you can blame Kazuki Nakashima. Quite frankly, I agree that this show is pretty damn unambitious. I think Mako interrupting is the least of this anime’s problems. If that’s the worst this anime has to offer, it’d be better. I was worried that this kind of thing would happen, but from TRIGGER’s perspective, it’s the safer bet financially.

I knew since Episode 6 that Satsuki would eventually betray her mother – when she addressed her mother as ”that woman” I just knew this was going to eventually happen.

It’s interesting how, if the opinion of Ryuko, Satsuki and Ragyo about Life Fibers were to be put on a spectrum, it’s Satsuki’s and Ragyo’s that would be complete opposites of each other – with how much the Anime shows off the confrontation between Satsuki and Ryuko it can come as odd.

Ragyo is the puppet of life fibers basically, she carries its (their?) will and is ready to sacrifice humans who have forgotten their place. She views human society as something that only exists because of the life fibers and humans as cattle (or pigs) – so to speak.

According to her humans are tools belonging to life fibers.

Satsuki believes otherwise – she believes in human strength, in that potential that ‘we’ had as the most advanced race before the life fibers even arrived. This is first seen in episode 6 too, when she says to Sanageyama that it’s not him who failed, but that his strength simply surpassed that of his uniform. Satsuki believes in that strength – which again is why she is disappointed in most people.

She was raised in a society that only proved why Ragyo’s point of view would be right, few are those who show the same potential humanity used to have, that explains why she calls them ‘pigs in human clothing’ the same way her mother would as they did nothing more than prove Ragyo’s worldview. Her father’s role hasn’t been determined as of yet.

That could be related to the contrast in mannerisms between the two, Ragyo who smiles a lot and Satsuki who scowls a lot. Ragyo’s point of view is all but proven every day by the masses while Satsuki’s can only be seen in rare occasions.

Now – Ryuko’s view has not been developed too much, she’s still probably confused about where she stands about the whole thing but she doesn’t appear to discriminate against humans or life fibers (or at least Senketsu).
