I’ve been waiting for Kill la Kill to take it to another level because quite frankly, before episode 17, both the action and the story simply wasn’t mind blowing enough for me to be too excited for what’s to come. Finally, the the escalation has come, and for probably the first time, I’m very excited to see how this will all end.

Kill la Kill Episode 18 Review

I don’t think there’s a single person who wasn’t at least aware of the possibility of this twist. Pretty much everyone made the guess that Ryuuko is Satsuki’s sister. However, just like episode 17, this episode excels in terms of execution, but even on a great level than that of the aforementioned episode. Since there’s not too much to analyze, I’ll simply say what impressed me this episode and why they did. While the complaints surrounding the overall animation quality in Kill la Kill is justified, I don’t think anyone is going to say that the animations are a problem this time around. TRIGGER shows what its talented animators can do when they are given a decent amount of resources. This burst in animation quality greatly complements the major part of what really impressed me this episode. What is this major part? It’s Satsuki’s downfall. Kill la Kill has built Satsuki as this unfathomable pillar of power that can never be toppled. All the struggles in previous episodes that Ryuuko has had revolved around Satsuki. From Ryuuko’s perspective, we saw just how powerful, dignified, and unbending she is. Actually, they make her even stronger than she was by noting that she wasn’t born to be able to wear Junketsu in the first place. This makes it all the more brutal when she is completely and utterly crushed.

Punch after punch, hit after hit, the unfathomably powerful pillar that is Satsuki crumbled in just a short scuffle. We all saw her as a protagonist long ago for she never really did anything as horrendous as Ragyou did. On that note, TRIGGER does a decent job of ratifying the fact that Ragyou is the actual detestable antagonist with the failed experiment, but I digress. There are just so many little things during the fight between Satsuki and Ragyou that really adds to the experience. For example, we look from Satsuki’s point of view as she’s being mercilessly struck and her hand comes up for a brief moment like a helpless child that can’t do anything about it. Then there’s how her legs are shaking after that, not to mention that her sword broke against just a fist. Finally, she gets almost everything, including her power that she needed to realize her ambitions, stripped from her reducing her to almost nothing. The grand image of Satsuki that was created in these past seventeen episodes was pulverized in a few minutes. I feel that this quick fall from her previous height is just very well realized. It captured what it needed to capture in such a short span of time. It makes me a bit sad that something like this wasn’t done earlier for it took so long for everything to finally come into place. It feels like Kill la Kill could have condensed some parts and come out with hype-inducing episodes like this a lot sooner. Of course, the whole deal with the Life Fiber and the strange nature of them that is hinted upon in the preview allows for me to anticipate what’s to come story-wise as well. In the end, this episode makes me sad that this couldn’t have happened sooner, and pretty damn hyped for what’s to come. Whatever lies ahead for Kill la Kill, this episode sure stole my heart for Valentine’s Day.

There are no words to describe what I felt for this ep. Though, what I do know is that my waifu Satsuki better come back with the vengeance of 10,000 raging suns for the slights she has endured a her mothers hands these passed few eps or I don’t think ill ever be able to forgive trigger.

  • Shiina

That episode was friggin epic. The plot twists, the turnarounds, everything! Can’t wait for the Satsuki and Ryuuko team-up. Trigger too good. XD

Ragyou better get absolutely destroyed by Satsuki.

  • migohunter

I initially thought that 18 couldn’t top how great episode 17 was. I am glad I was so so wrong.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

It all happened so fast. I was literally on my feet for the last 15 mins of this episode. The fall of Satsuki, the huge info dump, the life fiber heart, it was EPIC!

Well Ryuuko is a bit of a tsundere so she fits the little sister criteria lols. Now I’m curious to see what they decide to do in the next episode. Will they discard clothing and go all Nudist Beach?

My hunch is that Ryuuko will be kidnapped and Satsuki will take Senketsu and use him to rescue her. A bit cliché but it fits seeing as the Godrobe was made to be compatible with her sister’s DNA.

Happy Valentine’s Day for all you Gama X Mako fans!

Now at ep 21. Dude either we are both gifted with clairvoyance or this show is too predictable.

Still dat opening scene… *nosebleeds* and Statsuki-sama is just too perfect!

Despite his fearsome appearance, Gamagoori’s a good son. :)

And I fully support the growing Gama x Mako shipping on Pixiv. In fact, this series just brought forth an explosion of top-quality fan art work: http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=41553812
PS. If you’re watching Hoozuki, what do you think of it? It’s dry, witty humour definitely gives it a certain air of maturity, in my opinion.

Happy Valentine’s /Singles Awareness Day everyone!

Didn’t watch Hoozuki yet. I wasn’t really a fan of the manga. Maybe I’ll try it when it’s done.

Amazon BD/DVD preorders ranking show Witchcraft Works is turning into a bestseller among Japanese otaku, and is widely discussed on their forums.
Other top 5 include in order:
    2)Mikakunin
    3)Seitokai Season 2
    4)Hoozuki no Reitotsu
    5)Chuunibyou Season 2
    6) Nisekoi

A lot of good comedies this season. Seitokai s2 is definetly the best! But there’s also No-Rin, D-Frag, Tonari no Seki-kun and the biggest surprise of the season Mikakunin.

Idk that much about Witchcraft Works. The MAL synopsis left me going meh… Is it any good?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Witchcraft Works? I totally skipped out on that for some reason. I read a bit of the manga, but found no will to watch the anime. I guess now is the time to start.

      YEEEAAAAH MIKAKUNIN!!!

  • MACHA

SO GLAD THIS HAPPENED! SO FREAKING AWESOME.
My jaw dropped and stayed that way for the entire second half. PURE, UNSULLIED AWESOMENESS.

[No, I am NOT going to write another long post. Why do I write so much? T T This WILL be short!]

I’m just glad this episode really brings it all together. We weren’t watching Ryoko and her plot alone – all that was taking place in the much bigger SATSUKI ULTIMATE PLAN TO OVERTHROW RAGYOU.
    It’s been GLORIOUSLY fast-paced;
    it’s been FABULOUSLY NUDISTO BEEEEAAAAACHH;
and it’s been over the top. Though the plot wasn’t always up there, I love it all the same.

But THIS EP was my valentine today~

“DFJASDPFOAIDSJFOSDJFSDPOFIJSDOFASDOFJSDPOFAJSD” The ONLY appropriate reaction to that scene. How dare that baby-muredering, Life Fiber-Worshipping, child-molesting BITCH lay a hand on the Pillar of Unfathomable Greatness that is our Lady and Master SATSUKI-SAMA!!!

  • Aloxamax

With Satsuki’s sword broken, she can finally claim the other half of the scissors like a lot of people would have liked her to. Also, it’ll be interesting to see how she returns to the battle now that she has been stripped (litterally) of most of her power.

Next episode though: Elite 4 and nudist beach have to take care of everything now that both of their strongest fighters were taken out!

    …they’re screwed.

  • Ensen Devas

You guys need to understand the message of the anime to truly enjoy it. Clothing = Persona. Nobody truly has a personality, we make it up as we go through life. If you want to become a hero for example, you put on the persona of a hero, you live like a hero, you fake it until you make it, and in the end you are synchronized with your persona (100% synchronized between Ryuko and Sengetsu). So clothing exists to empower us. However, throughout history it’s been the opposite, we are slaves to clothing. Some trash wears blue and wears a badge and you obey them. Some old pedophile in the Vatican wears a funny hat and you worship him. The anime is about liberating mankind from the illusion of authority, just like it’s predecessor Gurren Lagann, except since nobody fucking got the message of Gurren Lagann, the creators decided to make it blatantly obvious in Kill la Kill. This is why the first scene of the first episode begins with “and so Democracy gave rise to Fascism”. Satsuki’s favorite lines about Fear, Control, and Contradiction all reflects the hypocritical nature of our society.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

“Nobody truly has a personality, we make it up as we go through life.” You see, this is where problems start to arise, and this goes deeper than you may expect it to go. How do you even define personality? If you define it as the patterns in behavior, attitudes, and emotions then yes, everyone has a personality. It’s ridiculous to say that no one has a personality. Your personality is influenced by the things you go through in life. That’s for sure, but what do you mean by no one “truly” has a personality? If you make it up as you go through life, isn’t that your “true” personality?

If you want to be a hero, you already have the mindset to be a hero. That is part of your personality before you even start actually trying to become one. Of course, there will be patterns in your behavior that differentiate you from others. What do you mean by “fake it?” What is even “fake” in this case? If the person is really trying to help others and do great things that heroes are known for, is that “faking it?” When do they become a real “hero?” When other people say that he or she is a “hero?” That’s not even going into the definition of a hero either.

We are not slaves to clothing itself. You can say that clothing is a symbol for a multitude of different things. For example, it could be power, oppression, or something that we put onto ourselves to maintain an image and being a slave for that front we put up in front of everyone. Clothing is just a small part of the power that people hold. It is significant, but it is not the end all be all. People worship those old pedophiles in the Vatican not purely because of his clothing. Again, it means something, but it is more than that. His name, the people he knows, the media surrounding him, and so on all matter a great deal. Authority goes far, far deeper than the significance of clothing, and while I understand that this is an anime and it’s just trying to portray one point, we do understand it. It’s just that it’s not comprehensive enough for me to care too much about it especially since it’s not even over yet. Not to mention, the whole point of anime and other entertainment mediums is first and foremost to be entertaining so we can think of these ideas that we otherwise would not. Quite frankly, I wasn’t having the greatest time until episode 17. I don’t care how deep an anime, movie or whatever is if it’s not entertaining because more likely than not, I can read a comprehensive book, essay, or treatise on the subject and gain much more. Of course, profundity does help the entertainment aspect somewhat. In the end, storytelling takes precedence before profundity in a medium like anime.

A lot of people understood the message behind Gurren Lagann. You just need to look around.
