I would love diving into the topic of whether human beings really are alone, but I think the KyoAni moe factor with the typical festival that is needed in just about every one of their shows takes precedence for obvious reasons. Oh, and the Akihito and Hiromi bromance must also continue smoothly. Yeeeees…

FORGET AKIHITO. LET THE GIRLMANCE COMMENCE.

Stop it, you know you want the KyoAni fireworks.

As the anime has already touched upon Akihito and Mirai, however well done that is aside, the move to develop Mitsuki strengthens the general development of the show as the focus on a single character’s progression usually helps the others’. Unlike Mirai who is quite easy to figure out, she’s probably the most interesting main character right now at least when we take her feelings into consideration. Her cute hesitation that betrays her cold front during several parts in this episode makes for some entertaining moments. You can tell that she’s been keeping this facade for quite some time, but it’s also being broken down slowly by Mirai’s airheaded, moe innocence. It seems that not only males are affected. Anyways, it’s a friendship in the making that will undoubtedly change Mitsuki which may make her the best character in this show as long as she’s not shoved aside which I hope won’t be the case as her interactions with Mirai are the best interactions in this anime so far. The two certainly complement each other better than that megane freak who just makes the humor terrible.

Kyoukai mitsuki as a child

… Screw Mirai’s moeness. This moeness is where it’s at.

Nase Mitsuki moe

:D

Holy shat, character development.

Hiromi surprised

Even Hiromi is shocked that this anime manages to accomplish that much.

From the bits of flashbacks of Mitsuki’s past, we can see that she was quite cheerful even under obligations that would have made many bitter right away. Still, as time passes, no one’s heart can remain in such a state with the environment opposing one’s natural tendencies. It is indeed a quick transition from her adamant stance to her suddenly taking up the offer of going to the festival, but that’s mostly because she really was alone until now. She just needed a slight push in a certain direction from someone who is at the very least a Spirit World Warrior that somewhat understands her situation. Mitsuki has quite the soft personality when all that icy coolness is melted by Mirai’s overwhelming airheaded moeness. I mean, asking her perverted brother for a candy apple? Jesus, if the past her traveled to the present, the present Mitsuki wouldn’t even be alive anymore. God knows why I even try to put time travel into my posts. Regardless, I can’t say I’m not slightly disappointed in Hiromi being asked instead of Akihito, but at this point, the shipping is the least of my concerns as just seeing Mitsuki get some smooth development this episode is already quite nice.

Kyoukai no Kanata Episode 5 Review

By now, all of us probably realize that this is not meant to be a serious show however serious the anime tries to be. This episode takes a more typical KyoAni approach in that it has that slice of life feel that we all know very well. To that end, this episode is done well, and even the humor this time around is probably the best I’ve seen in the anime so far because Akihito and his annoying reactions are out of the picture. That, and the fact that humor is not a primary focus and is done mostly spontaneously. The focus on Mitsuki as a character helps give some depth to the anime while remaining entertaining with her interesting interactions with Mirai. Most of this episode does not have the same tone of seriousness, but is concerning enough so that I actually care about what’s happening.

The transition where Mirai and Mitsuki are in the shop and then they are suddenly in the festival is a small pacing issue, but the bigger problem is how the show deals with the idea of loneliness. Honestly, it was going quite well without dialogue as we see bits and pieces of Mitsuki’s past and her reactions to the environment. It just had to be ruined by the dialogue at the end when Mirai says that, “It’s because everyone is alone.” Really? Is that line, and the repetition of that line one line after it really necessary? They do a good job portraying loneliness throughout this episode (Shizuku getting rejected is a nice touch as well) so why do they have to explicitly state it and ruin the mood? It makes me not care for the situation as much, and it’s insulting because it’s as if the show thinks we aren’t intelligent enough to decipher the obvious message in this episode so we need it spoon fed to us. I actually find Mitsuki as one of the better characters of the season, and this episode is especially pleasant in how it deals with her as a character. A lot of character development has been done in just one episode which is quite difficult to pull off. Overall, this episode is one of my favorites so far not that it means too much as Kyoukai no Kanata has been very disappointing so far. If this episode proves anything is that KyoAni needs to stay away from the serious aspects of the show they are not used to tackling and focus on the slice of life aspect that they are used to with some developments along the lines of what’s shown in this episode. Otherwise, it may only get worse.

Senseis never get any love, why must Japan be so mean to christmas cakes?

But honestly this show dem older women.

    – MC’s mom ( I want more of her )

    – Legs Onee-san is literally older short-haired Irisu, a bitch, but very hot. Dat smile X Mole

    – Sensei, well… If only Japan cared about them, I just want to protect all those christmas cakes smiles y’know. But it always ends up in suffering.

Other than this season, lots of nice older women this season.

    Manager from Samurai Flamenco

Then you got Rinko Iori in Gundam build fighters.

I know right, why do they have to be so mean? They should just move to some foreign country. The guys would be all over them.

WELL TECHNICALLY IMMORTAL VAMPIRE SAKI DOESN’T AGE. SO DOES SHE COUNT? DUNNO. WHATEVER, I GUESS SHE DOES.

I enjoyed this episode. It was great to see another side of Mitsuki. But…

Tooooo much moe after watching VALVRAVE. It was a mistake to have RAVE NIGHT first, then Nagi no Asukara, THEN this. Why’d I do that?! Oh well… one cure for that: KILL la KILL TIME!!!!!
Aw, who am I kidding, RAVE NIGHT HAD TO END WITH RAVE NIGHT!

  • Felix Andersen

Meh, I completely disagree with the desire that the show may stay more lighthearted SoL. I was greatly enjoying the first 4 episodes for the new approach, if anything, some of the old moe-inducing scenes weren’t necessary. I hope they have this breather episode, and apparently the next one as well, and then go back to the more serious tones for whatever is going on between the society and Izumi. I do agree that the “we’re all alone” was a bit much, but I’m not so sure if it was meant to hammer the point home or rather as a sign that Mirai not only realized that Akihito was kinda like her, but also that everybody else to some degree suffers the same, and she wanted to show him/them that she realized this. So it was maybe just a clumsy approach by her.
