Just last week I was thinking to myself how nice it would be to get some news of a season 2 of Log Horizon, but I knew that the chances of that wasn’t high at all because, well, there’s not enough source material for a season 2. CONNIVING RISING.

From the beginning of the establishment of the Round Table, the anime has always hinted at people’s unrest regarding Shiroe. It’s only now, however, that Shiroe himself is beginning to take this “problem” a bit more seriously. Of course, it’s not as if he doesn’t know of the disruptive rumors about him; Shiroe was looking at the big picture so intently that he forgot to take a clear look back at himself. It’s not a stretch to say that Shiroe is Machiavellian, but it’s not as if he believes that any means can justify an end. If it were to make his guild members or other people greatly suffering for his cause, then he would probably not undertake those means. When it comes to himself, however, he doesn’t mind how far he pushes himself or how far he needs to go to achieve his means. He thinks he can endure the isolation and suffering if need be. While it’d be great if every Machiavellian were like this, it’s not as if this is without downsides. Sure, someone could endure this for a while with one’s own moral drive alone, but everyone needs some kind of solace within all the pain. Shiroe, as much of a mastermind as he is, also needs to find comfort to continue pressuring himself to pursue greater goals. That place of comfort is no other than the guild that he founded himself, Log Horizon. You could say that it’s because he had his guild mates around him that he didn’t take a look back at himself. To Minori, it really is painful to see people talk badly about him when he’s constantly trying to keep everything rolling behind the scenes. However, that pain is infinitesimally small compared to the support he has received from Log Horizon and other guilds who acknowledge and support him in his ambitions. Whether he realized it or not, his guild and the other guild members became his moral support. As long as he has this safe haven, he can push through almost any kind of pain without eventually detesting the world.

Much like how Shiroe unwittingly sought solace within his guild, Nureha was one who tried to find solace in the real world by playing Elder Tale. This kind of escapism isn’t too uncommon, and I would go as far to say that plenty of people who read fiction, watch movies or anime have this to a lesser degree. Regardless, within the world where she sought solace, she really only found the spark to that solace in a certain enchanter. The problem is not how she felt in the past, but how she feels in the present now that she is one of the most powerful players in the game. While we could simply shrug off her yearning for Shiroe as a vestige of the past, her current position and the actions that she has taken to take over the west should certainly not be overlooked. Nureha is undoubtedly capable, and her schemes may be able to match those of Shiroe’s. One has to wonder then what he true objective is by trying to recruit Shiroe. Is it to make herself on top of the world in Elder Tale so she can satisfy her thirst for relevancy that she wanted in real life? Given how influential she is now, I doubt she even wants to go back to real life which is why when she brought up “Fraction” I was extremely wary of her intentions. Nonetheless, obtaining a crucial piece like Shiroe is not a bad move whatever one’s intentions may be because he’s one you’ll be glad to have on your side. I suppose you could probably conclude her actions to be a combination of both her yearning for Shiroe and her future ambitions. It’ll sure be interesting with another capable Adventurer joining the fray, and a sexy one at that… Right guys? You got to praise Shiroe for resisting DAT FOXINESS. God knows what I would have done to that fluffiness-

Log Horizon Season 2 Confirmed

Log Horizon season 2 announcement

ARE YOU READY FOR THE SEASON 2 WOW WOW?!
IS YOUR COUNTERACTION RISING?
ARE YOU READY FOR THE PUNCH LINE?
ARE YOU READY TO CHECK IT OUT?
ARE YOU STRUGGLING IN THE DATABASE?
WHO’S THE REAL SUCKER NOW?!
DATABASE DATABASE WOW WOW.

And here I thought 2014 couldn’t get any more crazy. THE DATABASE HAS WOW WOWED. Log Horizon is indeed getting a season 2 this year in Fall. This is actually a huge surprise for me because the anime went over five volumes leaving only two volumes left for the next season. It may just be a 1-cour season 2 or maybe the author could work directly with the anime and even move ahead of the light novels. Or they could just chain him to a desk and force him to write the next three volumes so a 2-cour season 2 can happen. More importantly, what does this mean for Log Horizon? What is the new goal that is even bigger than finding a way out of Elder Tale? Well, if I had to guess something, I’m thinking that Shiroe is trying to figure out Elder Tale. That is, he’s trying to figure out exactly how they got trapped in the first place and what the world of Elder Tale is really all about. To achieve this, Shiroe and his guild really will need to, as he says, “change the world.”

It started off with the unification of Akihabara, but I can imagine this extending to all of Japan and then eventually, the rest of the world. Shiroe leaving Akihabara will be only temporary. It’s not as if he’s succumbed to Nureha’s fluffiness. Though it’s not like I could blame him if he did. He is most likely going to go across the land to find out about the “Fraction” and the new magic to gain a better understanding of the world. And let’s not forget about the new level cap and the expansion which added things we haven’t even seen yet. It’s frightening looking at the potential that this anime has as it’s literally boundless. What grand design does Shiroe have in mind? How will this new magic affect the world? What will the expansion bring? What role will the People of the Land take? What are people across all of Japan doing? What are people across the world doing? What epic meta-events await? What role will the lower levels in Log Horizon play? Who else will join the guild? How will the romance play out? What is Nureha planning? Will the loss of memories catch up to the Adventurers? Will there be war between Adventurers? Do people even want to go back to real life? Their world is changing. Their reality is changing. It’s time for Log Horizon to change the world.

Log Horizon Episode 25 Review

I was going to write about how I’m going to miss this series and how I’m going to be sad that I’ll have to wait years before seeing anything else about this series, but that is no longer the case! This season finale does what a proper season finale that has yet to end the whole anime should, and that is to give proper closure to some plot-points and leave a huge amount of potential left to be explored for the next season without a gigantic cliffhanger. It’s quite a solid end to the very enjoyable season. I’ve always marveled at the setting itself because it just holds so much potential and there are a lot of aspects to this show that feel grand. We’re not just looking at the adventures of individuals; we’re looking at the changing of a world where everyone has some kind of a role to play. This feeling of scale is something that you don’t find in anime often, and when you add in the mind games and the cunning characters into the fray like Shiroe, Nureha, and Regan, that feeling is only further amplified.

What I find refreshing in this anime is the lack of a clear antagonist. While there are minor “bad guys” like Marves, there’s never been an end all be all antagonist. This opens up the world itself and thus the potential of it. Adding in wild cards like Nureha into the fray make things quite interesting as we don’t know if she’s on Shiroe’s side or not. Heck, even though we see the anime from Shiroe’s perspective, we don’t know what’s really going on inside his head so even the main protagonist is a wild card. The anime has done a good job of hiding Shiroe’s plans to create a greater sense of mystery which eventually turns into awe or excitement during the eventual revelation. There’s just something enticing about these crafty characters that I can’t get enough of. What I’m also surprised by is how I’m not overwhelmed even though there are so man facets to this anime. An ensemble cast is difficult enough to handle, but it just has so many things going on for it whether it be the People of the Land, the new magic, the guild politics, the romance, and so on.

The downside of tackling so many things even though it may not be overwhelming has to do with the degree of how well they are done and the pacing. It’s not as if the series felt completely off, but some parts of the show did feel a bit slow especially in the beginning few episodes where everything was being set up and the episodes that set up the goblin arc. Then there’s the problem of being the jack of all trades and the master of none. Out of all the characters, except for maybe Shiroe, I don’t find any of them truly outstanding. Such is the nature of most ensemble cast, but it is nonetheless a downside for spreading out the development across so many characters. That, and the romance is also quite unfulfilling. I also must say that the meta-event, while nice, was a bit underwhelming compared to what I thought it was going to be. There was something in me that wanted to see hundreds of troops fighting goblins, some more large scale magic attacks, and some unique tactics that are only found in video games. That brings us to the problem of the action in this anime which is… not particularly great. I understand that this is not an action-oriented show, but it does trouble me slightly wondering how bigger fights potentially involving thousands of people will play out in the future.

I’ll stop with the general critique before I repeat myself too much in my general review of Log Horizon. Going back to this finale, I am extremely content with how everything played out. My major hope going forward is that this series will fully utilize its setting and game elements so that the anime will become more and more grand involving more and more adventurers. Of course, that’ll involve the increasingly more magnificent stratagems, and some hopefully mind-blowing plot twists. One thing is for sure though, I’ll miss the weekly DATABASE DATABASE WOW WOW as that’ll be gone for good. What more MEGANE-PUSHING GOODNESS AWAIT? What other new magic will Shiroe and Regan discover? WHAT AWAITS US IN THE NEXT SEASON OF THE DATABASE WOW WOW? ARE YOU HYPED FOR SEASON 2? ARE YOU READY FOR THE PUNCH LINE? I AM BECAUSE MY COUNTERACTION SURE IS RISING. DATABASE DATABASE JUST SAY WOW WOW WOW WOW.

Mind you, it’s not just one tail. Her race has up to 9 tails depending on the character level. So there’s a lot of hidden fluffiness. But Shiroe has a bigger scheme. Why join the hot broken foxy lady when you can make her willingly become part of your harem? Still, she’s not loli soo not really his type man, though that wouldn’t be a problem with her crazy transformation skills.

That being said, the events in the next 2 volumes take place at the same time and the volumes themselves are very detailed, with enough “bombs” that you could easily fill in 12 episodes. Mamare-sensei said he’ll get back to writing soon. I expect at least another volume or two being released by the time season 2 airs. So what will happen after that? Will season 3 be delayed?

Hell no! There is a whole Europe-Asia spin-off series and the West Wind Brigade manga. So enough material to make either OVAs, or fill in the gap in-between seasons. That should give Mamare-sensei enough time to progress with the LN’s, which he said there will be 15 of.

This was a demonstration of a perfect ending: full closure, no plot holes and a good cliffhanger for the next season. You’re right there is no enemy, at least none that we know of yet. In pure shonen fashion once an enemy is dealt with, a stronger one appears, at least for now.

Romance and combat have a secondary role in Log Horizon. The spotlight is reserved for strategy and politics and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You can’t expect them to make epic raid battles with such a tight budget. Wait for the WoW movie to come out if you want to see one of those. If only the budgets for this anime and SAO were reversed.. sigh.

Sry Akatsuki, pic is reserved for the newcomer to Shiroe’s harem today.

WHAT. NINE TIMES THE FLUFFINESS?! SHE SHOULD HAVE SHOWN ALL OF THEM WHEN TRYING TO SEDUCE SHIROE. THAT MAY HAVE WORKED.

Those spin-off series will probably end up being OVAs which is preferable as I’d still like them to stick to the main story for the actual season continuations. As for the romance and combat, I understand that they are secondary, but that doesn’t escape criticism. If they do it, then it’s free to criticize to a certain degree. And that’s the thing, if they do end up focusing partially on romance, they potentially take things away from everything else such as the strategy and political side. I also understand the budget limitations, and that can’t really be helped. However, during the meta-event, I was hoping they would give more details as to the actual strategy, formations, and so on. Something beyond the basic map that they showed us and the very general outline of where everyone was. Something that showed the general enemy formations and how they use tactics to take them out. I mean, that would just involve them sketching out vague outlines on a map and drawing arrows as well as adding some notations as to what each cluster was responsible for. It wouldn’t have taken much budget at all. They do this to a far lesser degree, but I was honestly hoping for more. I guess Kingdom really spoiled me. >.>

NUREHA GOODNESS. :) Thanks for reading!

Great! Now unto Dandy, Kill la Kill and Nobunaga reviews :)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’ll be honest with you, I’ll probably not do Dandy or Nobunaga. It’s pretty obvious that I’ll do the finale to Kill la Kill, but I’m not too interested in Space Dandy, and Nobunaga has still not ended which means that the review could be better spent elsewhere for other 2-cour shows that will end soon like Tokyo Ravens.

      • niknasr

Yeah, Finally we will see a proper Tokyo Ravens review.. Sadly, the chance for a second season is slim to none.. As for Nobunaga the Fool, it really has picked up, it’s certainly improved from its lackluster earlier episodes.. Btw, is there any chance you will do finale for Mikakunin and Sekai Seifuku too?

p/s: I really need to start watching Log Horizon..

Probably not because I’d much rather finish a project I’ve been working on for quite some time and the preview for next season.

Will you be doing a final review of Noragami and Strike the Blood as well?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Not sure about either of them to be honest. Can’t make any promises.

  • Desu

Waaa , I cant wait for season 2 , but as for that , if kami-shiroe decide to leave akihabara that might mean we’ll not watch a lot of marielle, megame girl, megame paladin , serara or reineshia( o dunno how its spelled) , I’m still escited as the noobs are catching up so we might see some whole guild battles and all ( I really expect more PvP battles , like fluffiness vs shiro-kami strategist battle or something like that)

    – P.s – I rather see Shiroe with Akatsuki ( I got nothing againts minori or fluffiness, but… they just look so cool ) . Now lets get prepared for Kill la Kill stripping ending :3
