Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Episode 1 Review

As much as I’d like to compose a first impressions purely of random comments, I think it’s more worthwhile to actually take a serious approach to some of the criticism against this show. One of the major parts of this anime that will break the audience into two groups is the overpowered characters. I didn’t think they’d show Tatsuya’s abilities off right from the get-go, but they did which makes my job a bit easier. Is having overpowered characters a bad thing? Not necessarily. Can it be a bad thing? Absolutely. Instead of strictly looking at the Gary Stu trope and how it can affect an anime, we could also look at some generic parts of good anime, such as the typical high school setting in OreGairu and the love triangle in White Album 2, and see that it’s not all bad when a show implements these facets. At the very least, merely including cliche parts will not simply break an anime. As such, I don’t agree with those who are castigating this anime based on the overpowered characters on this episode alone.

I haven’t read much of the light novel for the Engrish translation was so poor I just couldn’t handle it. Not to mention the info dumps and the boring expositions at time really lost me. Therefore, I can’t say if it will explore this trope in an acceptable manner. I will, however, try to lay down a few expectations that will outline what I think could be good usage of this trope going forward. Firstly, there absolutely must be strong adversity. Tatsuya Stu can throw his nuclear bombs, but there better be someone who is on somewhat the same level as he. Strong adversity would force the protagonist to use his powers in a wise manner and would make for some more engaging conflicts. I don’t just mean in terms of fighting capabilities either. Hopefully someone will be able to match Tatsuya’s mental capabilities to make for some interesting drawn out conflicts. What fun would it be if Tatsuya just destroyed absolutely everyone without much effort? There has to be a struggle and it can’t be too easy to overcome or it’d get stale. Secondly, there must be teamwork. The supporting characters must not be useless dolts that are completely overwhelmed by Tatsuya’s prowess. Having them be able to do things that Tatsuya alone cannot do would help accentuate the fact that, while he is overpowered, he is still flawed in one way or another.

Thirdly, the animations and the sound have to support the “cool factor.” This is the aspect that we can most clearly identify with this episode alone, and I must say that the sound assets used when magic is used is surprisingly great. Even Iwasaki Taku is doing the soundtrack so there’s no worries there. With the monk fight scene and the magic activation being pretty damn great as well, Mahouka won’t have any problems covering this third aspect. Finally, the overpowered character must stick to a rigid system where he or she cannot just randomly get powers out of nowhere. For example, let’s say that for 10 seconds a character is capable of becoming many times faster and stronger. And let’s say that in that story, it’s overpowered. The writer draws a fine line in this case and there’d be no problem with that provided that the 10 second limitation is actually a limitation that matters. If, however, all of a sudden in the middle of a fight the overpowered character powers up conveniently and a half-assed explanation appears after the fight to try and pick up the pieces, that’s unacceptable. It’s preferable that the writer sets up a proper system for the character’s abilities so that the audience knows what are the character can and cannot do. This will maintain the overpowered nature of the character, but it’ll help it from going out of control.

Now you may be saying, can’t you apply these four parts to almost any show? Yes, and that’s the point. It’s easy to ignore things like having a strong adversity and setting up a proper system so that the overpowered character doesn’t go out of control when you do have an overpowered character on your hands. It’s easy to continue to build upon the power fantasy the more powerful a character becomes. The writer must know moderation which is where some shows fall flat when it comes to exploring overpowered characters. The same goes for the development of their character. When you actually closely examine these types of characters, they’re not really close to being “perfect.” However, the show itself may never address the inner qualities of that character and how his or her powers may actually not be a blessing. Instead, it will focus almost entirely on portraying how overpowered the character is, and how “cool” it’d be if you were in his or her shoes. It’s perfectly possible to have strong character development with these kinds of characters. It may even be quite an original take on character development.

Enough of the overpowered characters. What about the WINCEST? It’s interesting watching the two interact as the two voice actors also did Kyousuke and Ayase from Oreimo. Personally, I don’t mind how Miyuki is a complete brocon and that they act so lovey dovey. But that’s not all. You can kind of tell from the first scene that their relationship may go deeper than meets the eye. I mean, yeah, she loves him more than a sister should, but it doesn’t seem that it just came out of nowhere. Going by what the first scene conveys, Tatsuya sacrificed himself for her and she feels indebted to him. That’s moving a bit beyond having feelings for her brother “just because.” Going forward, will the show expand upon their past and build the reasoning behind why Miyuki may feel such a way towards her brother? Will it be backed up with proper character development or will it stay as a surface level relationship?

I’ll be honest. I probably won’t view their relationship in this much of a serious manner most of the time. To me, if I find their behavior endearing, that’s enough. As long as it doesn’t become annoying and doesn’t occur too often, I’m fine with it just being a cute addition to the show. That said, if it does try and take the path of exposing their pasts and developing their relationship in a serious tone, then you can expect me to look at it as such and it’ll be open to more critical analysis. For now, it remains a lighthearted part of the show that I find quite adorable. I’ll save what else I have to say for future reviews or I’ll run out of things to say, but to summarize my thoughts on how well the adaptation is done, I must say that they did a good job of cleaning up the boring parts of the source material and making it more engaging. That monk fight should speak volumes for how the rest of the action will turn out. Not to mention how well done the animations are for the magic sequences. Will this show be anything groundbreaking? Lolyou’refunny. Will it be entertaining? For me, HELL YES. CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THE GARY TATSUYA STU NUCLEAR BOMB PEW PEW AND ALL OF THAT DELICIOUS WINCEST.

I’m really interested to see how they’re going to spread this out, i.e. how many of the LNs they’re going to cover. By the looks of the OP (CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF LISA BY THE WAY) it looks as though they’ll probably get to maybe Volume 6 which would be a good place leave it for the next season. The first episode was a great start and I look forward to the rest of the series and how they handle it. I hope they manage the info dumps well as the LNs had a lot of them, not that this was a problem, most of the time. The action was nothing short of amazing as well as the soundtrack. (The Nine Schools Competition Arc is going to be FANTASTIC)

All in all, definitely my favourite for the season.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Hell yes. I pretty much only read the manga and some minor spoilers so seeing the Nine Schools Competition Arc should be awesome.

  • Ian Anthony

My favorite part of this episode is the clear and blatant *in your face* social hierarchy that is showed. Wincest wins all the time though.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

WINCEST IS AT THE TOP OF THE SOCIAL HIERARCHY AND THOSE BLOOM SCRUBS (except for HANAHANAHANZAWA) ARE AT THE BOTTOM.

      • Ian Anthony

get ready to be slapped in the faces blooms cause its Gary Stu effing time.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

Such strong Wincest from the very start. Couldn’t stop laughing the whole episode. Nukes? so soon? Will treat this anime as a 3rd season of OreImo, Ayase route.

    • MgMaster

Will treat this anime as a 3rd season of OreImo, Ayase route.

NOOOO,just the reminder of that is…UGH!

In all seriousness though,Miyuki is like Ayase without all the bitchness, which I’m perfectly fine with!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Man, those nukes. I read a comment about him being able to fire off nukes and it made me laugh so hard. Didn’t think they’d show it in the first episode, haha.

  • MgMaster

So in other words Entrav, overpowered characters musn’t be like this guy. I can live with that!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

That’s what I was trying to get at. :)

  • Regendorf

Kyousuke OP, Ayase imouto and Hanazawa is here (why wasn’s she a kouhai… doesn’t matter, Hanazawa ftw).
So its like Oreimo+magic-kirino…and a completely different story that involves firing nukes.
    Awesome

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Awesome indeed. The party’s all here.

      • MgMaster

I mostly liked the “-Kirino” part(yes,I hate her with a passion). Makes me think that I would’ve liked all of the OreImo characters even in S2 if she wasn’t in the picture, lol.

  • EvilNemesis

Tatsuya the Nuclear Batman! Ah yeee.

Mari character design isn’t that great compared to her glorious tomboy looks in the Manga/LN.

Look wise Mayumi and her are the best. Mayumi reminds the best, but Mari has been “removed” from the LN because the Author butchered her character by introducing her boyfriend later on.

Japan can’t handle girls that are impure so the author had to throw her under the rug… never to be seen again lolol. SASUGA JAPAN!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      LOL SERIOUSLY? Hahahahahahaahahahahaha. SASUGA JAPAN.

  • yakoutora

how damn good madhouse made this anime. i cant wait more longer for next chapter. ALL HAIL WINCEST :v

  • Guruguru

When the credits rolled and the song starts playing, I was like, “Oh sh*t, it’s LiSA!!!”

Great first ep, by the way. This season has a lot of promising anime,

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Couldn’t handle the LiSA with the Gary Stu vs Gary Stu gun pointing action.

      • Lim Cheng Yi

you just convince me to watch this anime with that 1 sentence..

  • niknasr

This episode made I feel like Mahou Sensou never exist.. ><

The episode is great, good opening ep for the hype-st show of the season.. Wincest is truly the best, I found Miyuki's dere mode really endearing.. Hm, and I felt somewhat mysterious vibe from Tatsuya, like he's some sort of spy or something.. Those hand-to-hand combat really awesome, and it's somewhat refreshing after repeatedly watch typical energy ball/blast thing.. Really looking forward to the rest..

Based on the 12 shows I have watched, they also looking strong on their first episode.. This season shape up to be the most interesting if not great season..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Don’t escape from reality. Mahou Sensou will always exist. It will be in the realm of reality forever. It’ll remain something that people look towards as a lesson for how to not create anime. Honestly, I’ve learned more about what not to do from Mahou Sensou more than most other anime.

      • niknasr

I think if I take much more of that, my brain will go offline permanently.. Now, I know the feeling of being betrayed and got your high hopes flushed down the toilet.. Still, somewhere I felt pity for the author because it seems Madhouse did ‘double standard’ with his work compared to the now showing NGNL and Mahouka no Wincest..

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, even the author of Mahou Sensou said it was a bad idea to adapt it into anime format. I don’t think he was too happy with his own creation in the first place.

          • niknasr

Yeah maybe so, but Madhouse seemed to make it worse than it could have been.. First, the character design is ugh… not even close to the LN although my rating for it, is still passable, and the cringe scene was exist in each episode, sudden development of story out of nowhere and not in a good way and the list keep going on as one would expect from 7 vol of LN cramped into 12 episodes..

Enough of my blabbering, I think.. Btw, I just watched Haikyuu and oh damn, it’s really good although with shounen atmosphere surrounding it as what you would expect from manga in Weekly Shounen Jump.. I hope at some point we could read a review of it..

  • anon

I enjoyed and liked your review however I think that this series mainly focuses on bonds and relationships formed by the two main characters and how they grow as humans and not on the battles that they will duke out with other magicians. I have read the novel and believe me, many if not most of the fight scenes are one-sided. This series charm also lies with it’s story telling where the focus shifts from one character to another and is not just concentrated on the mains. And I liked the authors writing style since its not as wordy as the lord of the rings books and is still capable of painting a picture of the setting and society that they lived in that allows the reader to appreciate and connect with the characters.

  • anon

My impression of your review is that you view this series like you would a shounen series I think its better to view this series as a slice-of-life-in-a-magical-world. Kinda like Outbreak Company only not in rom-com with elves and a weak main character format. Anyways the series focuses on bonds and relationships not action.
