Monogatari Series: Second Season Episode 21 Impressions

Not going to happen.

MORE LIKE THE FABULOUS KAIKI STORY.

If someone is going to tell me that my life has been a lie, I’d prefer if Kaiki doing the telling.

Senshougahara

SENSHOUGAHARA.

No one likes to get stabbed except ARARARARARARARAGI.

Yep.

Huge emphasis right here.

He’s a scumbag. He’s a con artist, and most of all, he’s a fabulous son of a bitch. The implications of Kaiki telling the story is quite interesting as he is someone who deceives everyone. Talk about an unreliable narrator. At the same time though, we can take his words in Nisemonogatari that, “The fake is far greater in value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it’s more real than the real thing.” We can apply this to his narrative, and whether he really does end up telling the “truth” or not, may just be as significant as if he was actually telling the truth. Of course, Senjougahara herself is finally back, and I could not help but find their interactions humorous and intriguing. You’d think that they’d be more serious with their conversation, but whether it be Kaiki’s inner delight at his victory or just they way they’re dressing, this is quite a ridiculous way to tackle a serious topic. Senjougahara doesn’t know Gaen, and she really has nowhere else to go to ask for help. Even if Kaiki has put her through tough times, when it comes to Araragi, she’s willing to do just about anything. Actually, their conversation seems to be between two people who are relatively close. There’s the random word jabs here and there that would not come alongside a conversation between two people who are on opposing sides.

Fabulous. He should make a KAIKI MAGAZINE.

HE WANTS DAT MONKEY.

Deishu Kaiki yes

Such a fucking badass voice to go with his character.

The dominant one in this conversation is definitely Kaiki. He is the one who can make the final call, and it’s not like Senjougahara has much of a choice, but that’s not all. By dominant, I also mean that he has control of the conversation itself. Senjougahra reacts to his jabs which only shows her childishness, and Kaiki doesn’t stop to make remarks that only serves to irritate the other side. No one doubts his abilities, but he’s still a con artist at heart, and an indifferent one not motivated by morals viewers may hold. While some of us may be willing to take up this task given that we have the same abilities as Kaiki, he’s sticking true to his con artist side and is trying to find a reason. Well, you could argue that he’s so good at manipulating people that he even manipulates himself sometimes. Instead of letting Senjougahara convince him, he’s trying to convince himself which is incredibly unusual. Usually, if you don’t want to take up a task, that would be that. You wouldn’t contemplate about it to such lengths. Could Kaiki have a soft spot for Senjougahara to some extent? We know that he doesn’t have a large enough one to do it for free without other reasons, but perhaps the reason why he is even trying to convince himself is because he still feels slightly guilty. At the end of the day, it all comes down to Kanbaru Suruga and Gaen Izuko. If he is capable of doing a job for her even though she’s so detached from this problem, then it probably means that he owes quite a bit to Gaen. Whatever his reasons are, I’m just curious of how he will deceive Nadeko with hopeless the situation is. Let’s see the brilliant con artist get to work.

Monogatari Series: Second Season Episode 21 Review

Kaiki is definitely one of my favorite characters in this anime. Indeed, Senjougahara is right to not tell Araragi about this as they are two complete opposites. One lives by deception while the other lives by helping others through their troubles. Sometimes, the two overlap, but their motives are completely different. This separation from Kaiki being just a normal righteous protagonist makes his perspective a unique and interesting one. Everything from his voice to his mannerisms have a tone of uncaring nature that is entertaining to watch. Couple that with Senjougahara herself and there’s only greatness to be had. The interactions truly shine when both sides have top-notch characters that make the most of the scenario at hand, and boy is this scenario glorious. I have absolutely no complaints. Funny scenes, insightful scenes, some nice word jabs, and some magnificent head tilts make this quite a great episode. That, and Kaiki is just damn fabulous.

I am appalled at your guess. It is such a cheesy twist that…

          • The Atomic Dwarf

But it suits Kaiki’s personality soo much. Perhaps the author was watching Soap Operas when he wrote this arc, you never know :)

Ok she might not be his daughter, there seems to be no physical resemblance. But there is still the possibility they might be related in some way.

  • Ketsu

HITAGI END IS FINALLLYYY HERRREEEEE!! And as you stated, Kaiki is just to fabulous. I never thought I see someone make Senjougahara take the defensive like that. I can only wonder what is his connection to Kanbaru?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Senjougahara’s strength is when it comes to dealing with Arararararararagi. I just hope they have plenty of interactions this arc.

Is it wrong to like Kaiki even more than what you like Araragi as a narrator? WELL, NO, RIGHT?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

OF COURSE NOT. IT’S THE OVERLY FABULOUS KAIKI.

  • MgMaster

Oh man,it’s like the whole tone of the series has changed compared to the previous arcs.We get not just Hitagi but Kaiki too?IMO,this was the best aspect of Nisemonogatari as well(and the toothbrush scene,of course) and I couldn’t be more happy with the start of this arc.

It’s also good that they didn’t leave Nadeko’s story hanging like that,I was starting to worry.

  • Tenc

Is “Hitagi End” the end of Hitagi arcs? D: If this is the last arc of Hitagi, it would feel like i got duped after being so excited for Hitagi to re-appear after Araragi hinted the return of Senjougahara at the end of Nise.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

No idea, but I guess we’ll find out. Hopefully not, and I really don’t think the author would just let one of the best characters of the show go like that.
