After all the deception, all the stalking, and all of the Kaiki fabulousness, this final arc of the second season draws to a close, and what an ending it is! With much to discuss, let’s get right down to it. This is the finale of the Monogatari Series: Second Season. This is KAIKI END.

Monogatari Series: Second Season Episode 26 Impressions

Is there even a difference between the two in the end?

Sengoku Nadeko

Everyone lies after all. SURPRISE SURPRISE.

Well, shit.

Can’t hate that.

Change yourself.

NONE OTHER THAN GAHARA.

Ougi… She’s like the Kaiki we knew before this arc except she’s more dangerous because I’m guessing she doesn’t have a kind of background we can somewhat sympathize with.

Sengoku Nadeko evil face

Cuteness penalty.

HACHIKUJI… HACHIKUJI IS GONE YOU BRAT. Wait- WAIT, DON’T EAT MY FACE WITH YOUR HAIR FULL OF SNAK-

Whoa whoa, you can’t go there.

OH HE’S SERIOUS NOW.

Monogatari Series Second Season

SMACKED BY A GOD.

Luring her in. MWAHAHAHAH.

Nadeko Manga drawings

Dat shoujo manga.

Ararararararararararagi.

Sengoku Nadeko flustered

So cute… NO. DON’T BE DECEIVED.

Or you could just kill him and then send your snakes or something to eat that manga…

Totally implying that this shrine will utterly fail.

Kaiki Deishu kicked

Bitch please.

You just love drawing manga too much.

KEIKAKU.

Why is Kizumonogatari not on here? OH WAIT.

Arararararararararaaraararararraarrarararararararararrararagi.

Don’t talk about your former lover like that. D:

She’s beginning to realize!

D:

Kaiki Deishu bleeding

Bitch please.

NADEKOPLS.

He’s totally implying that she was in love with him before.

Senjougahara Hitagi smile

Not enough GAHARA.

KEIKAKU DOORI. DON’T QUESTION THE KAIKI POWA.

Oh yes. Oh yes. Many.

If he wasn’t sure, he’d be dead, so he has to be sure.

Hitagi End nadeko

Never doubt.

This is the an awkward ship, BUT WHATEVER.

I can’t be absolutely certain if Kaiki planned all of this to happen. It’s quite possible that he took Nadeko to be more of a fool than he thought she actually is because of how closed off to the rest of the world he is. Then again, it’s also equally likely that this has been his plan from the very beginning as he is a master con artist, and deceiving even the audience is a part of it as he so warns at the beginning of the arc. While it’s interesting to contemplate that, it’s far more worthwhile to analyze exactly how Kaiki manages to change Nadeko’s mind. The first major step is revealing that Kaiki knows what Nadeko really wants to do. Yes, this is not a facade that she puts up openly in front of everyone. This is something that she does not even want her beloved Koyomi to see. By prying into her personal space, Kaiki destroys the barrier that shields Nadeko’s own personal little world from all else. This first step, brings Kaiki closer to Nadeko than anyone ever has.

One of the most profound aspects of the episode are the cliche lines that Kaiki says to Nadeko. Strange I know, but those cliche lines should signal something in your head for Monogatari has always been treading the grounds of profundity and pretentiousness but it has never really delivered overly cliche lines like this. The reason is simple; Nadeko is still a kid, and you have to remember that cliche lines are cliche for a reason. Everyone knows of these ideas, but Nadeko doesn’t. She has never truly opened herself up to anyone, and blocked herself from the rest of the world. Inside, she still needs to be taught what most people already know. These cliche lines need to be said because she is like a child who doesn’t know any of these ideas. Kaiki even says to Araragi at the end that these are obvious things. Indeed, they really are obvious things. However, these obvious ideas are the the things we learned going through life. Nadeko hasn’t truly gone through life yet as she only wore her cuteness as a mask. So then when it all breaks down, she needs to be taught again, and this time it is for real because she no longer has a mask. We’ve all heard cliches from our parents, relatives or whatever, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds them tiresome. We may say, “I know, I know” or accept those pieces of advice in peace only to push them out of our minds because we know already. Sengoku Nadeko, on the other hand, is attentive, listening, and is completely receptive. For the first time, these ideas have dawned upon her when they should have a long time ago. The wall that she has put up all this time has finally broken.

He’s not necessarily lying.

ARE YOU IMPLYING SOMETHING, KAIKI?!

Taking deep-throating to a whole new level.

Oh God, MUST REFRAIN FROM MAKING MORE DIRTY JOKES. But now that I’ve stimulated your mind, feel free to imagine what this line really means.

Wow, even the socks.

KEIKAKU DOORI.

Ouch.

Araragi Koyomi

Make amends by disappearing from her life.

D:

I know right, but it seems like that’s the only thing some people talk about.

Eventually.

AGAIN?! AGAIN?! I’LL HOLD YOU TO THAT, KAIKI.

The reason why Kaiki tells Araragi to stay away is precisely because he is in the same situation himself. He stays away from Senjougahara because he knows he’s not a positive influence for her. For Nadeko, she has centered her obsession around Araragi, and it’d be best if she is to never even see Araragi ever again because she won’t be reminded of her past behavior of locking herself up to the rest of the world and only showing a fake version of herself. To move on and not be completely psychotic hellbent on killing everyone related to Araragi, she would be better off not seeing him. While it may not lead her to happiness as Kaiki says, she will certainly live as a human being that lives the way she wants to live, and maybe that’s something that’s good enough in and of itself.

:)

It’s like they’re breaking up.

Lies.

THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT.

That realization when he’s just been walking and the rest is completely dialogue.

Araragi needs to be careful.

Getting the last word in. Heh.

And you know her well.

What a good character.

B-B-BUT I WANTED TO SEE MORE JABS BACK AND FORTH.

KEIKAKU DOORI OF A KEIKAKU DOORI. Waitwat.

INB4 HE’S THE MASTERMIND.

WHICH WAY ARE WE GETTING SHOT FROM?

Kaiki Deishu death

No…

….

NO……………………………………………………….

………………………………

FUCKING OUGI. THAT SON OF A BITCH.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, BUT I AM.

NOWTF. NADEKO! GET BACK YOUR POWERS AND ELIMINATE THIS GUY-

NO, YOU’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. SHUT UP. D:

Well, the bottom of your heart is on the ground now-
I MEAN, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!

Shocked would be an understatement as to my state of mind with this kind of development. But before we overwhelm ourselves with words that would put Kaiki into another world, should such a thing exist, it’d be best to ask whether he’s really even dead. We are seeing the whole story from Kaiki’s perspective. He has warned us that he could be deceiving us, and his fate could very well be one of those things. But I really have no proof, and I could very well be overthinking things. It is more likely for Ougi to eliminate Kaiki after he has messed up her plans or for a multitude of other reasons that point to Kaiki’s death. Of course, I don’t want him to die. I was indifferent before this arc, but after getting to know the man personally and seeing his side of the story and how he’s been pushing aside his feelings for Senjougahara for her sake, I can’t help but like him. Whether he really dies or not, only the title, “Kaiki End,” truly fits because Kaiki is fucking awesome.

Monogatari Series: Second Season Episode 26 Review

Well, that’s one way to end this second season of Monogatari. Hanamonogatari is going to be released sometime in 2014 so it won’t be too long until we get a continuation. Anyways, for an arc that I have been anticipating since the start of the series, I can say that I am quite satisfied with how things progressed. I have to admit that this arc caught me completely off-guard. The title is “Hitagi End,” and while that makes perfect sense, I was expecting to see the story through the eyes of Senjougahara. Nonetheless, this ended up being a pleasant surprise as Kaiki became one of my favorite characters of the show. Cunning, mischievous, enthralling, and just downright badass, Kaiki, in a span of just six episodes became one of my favorite characters of the year as well. He’s even got the voice to boot. Still, there is a noticeable drop in the quality of animations for this episode, and the voice acting for Kaiki at some parts is a bit… awkward. I get that the voice actor is trying to sound a certain way, but it’s done a bit too often and the voice is stressed too much at certain times.

Aside from that, we have the profundity that many of us have come to expect the series to deliver. This time, we look into Kaiki, and Nadeko, but I’d argue that the main focus is still on Kaiki. How he truly feels about Senjougahara and his relationship with her can be analyzed to a great degree. Their interactions keep us guessing, and entertained. The talk with Ononoki in the previous episode shed some light into his enigmatic inner feelings, and the talk with Araragi in this one also does the same. Of course, the way he deals with the problem of deceiving Nadeko is yet another interesting layer. He stalks, he gathers information, he deceives, and he looks into girls’ closets to get the job done. All in all, Kaiki makes this arc as good as it is, and yes, it’s been a damn good arc.

Damn it, what a great finale. This was definitely the best arc of the season. The only little complain I have with MSS is that there was a certain lack of Araragi/Gahara interactions. Then again, their relationship already got developed enough during Bake and Nise. The main goal of this season was to give the rest of the cast a proper development and closure.

Now I hope that we’ll get Hana soon.

I really wanted to see more Araragi and GAHARA interactions too, but the ones between Kaiki and GAHARA aren’t bad either.

As long as I know SHAFT has got Hana for 2014 I’m good. Kizu however…………

I feel like during this whole ending of Monogatari Second Season it was me, not Kaiki, that got hit in the head with a metal pipe and is still lying dead somewhere in the snow in a pool of blood. That being said, this show, together with Gintama movie, saved the year 2013 in it’s last week. Looks like I can leave this year with some good memories and move on~~ ;>

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Seriously, 2013 has been a pretty weak year. Not to mention how a lot of series disappointed me this season, it’s good to see a decent conclusion for once.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hipployta Hipployta

I knew what coming from the translation of the novel but I still felt like I was knocked upside the head…pardon the pun…damn that Ougi…the next cover is implying a lot of things

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s going to be Kanbaru Suruga’s turn next. :)

      • Raymond Ramírez

Deish Kaiki will visit Suruga Kanbaru in Hanamonogatari, so he is alive.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

Blame Ougi all you want in the end it’s what he deserved. And with that final blow, the con man died and perhaps a new Kaiki will awaken to take his place. I’m sure he’s not dead, it’s just the punishment he got for breaking his own rules and helping Senjougahara out.

Someone left this link describing Kaiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byronic_hero .

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

NO RULES WERE BROKEN. HE DECEIVED HIMSELF. HE’S STILL THE #1 CON MAN. LALALALAALLAALALAALA.

Ah, the Byronic hero. Yep, that describes Kaiki adequately.

  • edo

so..they loved each other but were they a couple in the past?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s not explicitly stated, but I’m guessing that they weren’t exactly boyfriend and girlfriend. I think they just held those feelings and didn’t have a… regular relationship like Araragi and Gahara are having now. Though, I can’t be absolutely certain because the way Kaiki describes her makes me think that they went out before or something like that. It’s up to you to interpret.

  • Yami Scarlet

Just…I…Kaiki…damn Nisiosin… First was Hachikuji, now Kaiki. Well, there goes my second favourite character in Monogatari Series. Some people complain about the end, but I think the same as you… Nadeko was still a child without experience in life or emotions, so it’s a realistic end. Nonetheless, I wonder WHY she is like that…I mean, you don’t end up being like that without something that proves your way of thinking is right, even more when you are a child. The end was pretty realistic, worthy of Monogatari, but quite dissapointing because Nadeko was an idiot after all XD I just want to forget about the last bit…wanted to kill Kanbaru for preventing Araragi from stopping the snake… well, Araragi would have died, but…OK, THERE IS NO SOLUTION AND NOBODY TO BLAME. I just hate this XD

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I think the solution is very cleverly done. It’s not often cliche lines are used to be profound at the same time, BUT KAIKI. D:

      • Yami Scarlet

The solution was, indeed, cleverly done… Nadeko being an idiot is not even an error XD It’s just she is one.

I’m amazed at how much this arc pretty much renewed my interest in the Monogatari franchise. I considered Hanekawa’s & Nadeko’s arcs to be fairly good but Shinobu/Mayoi arcs were really pushing me away from the series. It’s not just because I’m not a fan of their characters either(although I admit that’s a reason as well) but also because I didn’t feel they really added much to the overall story of this season. Come think of it,it was mostly the Nadeko/Hitagi arcs that did that. Nadeko’s arc became better for me due to Hitagi’s. I’m also amazed that I enjoyed it so much even though Senjougahara wasn’t really the protagonist of the arc,but Kaiki,a character who I,like many others, never really paid that much attention to in Nise. This amazing son-of-a-bitch made this arc so great(honorable mention to Gahara-san too though) which in turn proved that the Monogatari franchise hasn’t lost it’s touch, even though i still don’t consider neither this season nor Nise on par with Bakemonogatari, but that’s just me.

Looking forward to the next adaptation.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I expected this arc to be good, but not in the way that it’s actually done because Kaiki is just… KAIKI. I thought it would be GAHARA doing most of the work for this arc, but I was pleasantly surprised. It definitely makes me far more anticipated for what’s to come as a few arcs here and there in this season were kind of lacking. If all of the arcs were like this, this anime would be the anime of the year for me. Nonetheless, it’s still great overall.

GOODNIGHT, DARK PRINCE, AND FLIGHTS OF ANGELS SING THEE TO THY REST.

I SHALL NEVER FORGET YOU KAIKI.

If Gahara-Sama gains massive powers after certain events in the un-foreseeable third season, and kicks the holy hell out of ougi’s faction so much it turns Ougi male, I will forever re-allign myself as a rabid fanboy of the one true goddess. Amen motherfuckers.

D: DON’T WRITE HIM OFF JUST YET. HE IS PROBABLY DECEIVING US LIKE THE CLEVER BASTARD HE IS.

Our dreams came true last month apparently ;D

  • Gamematio

If you really pay attention … you can learn a lot from this anime. Awesome. Great Review. Keep it up Entrav you always have XD. Also … will you be doing a list of the Spring 2014 Season?

  • Kimnitsu

El final de la serie me dejó un poco impactado, Kaiki también había capturado mi simpatía, un buen personaje, no me gustaría que muriese. En la segunda temporada, ojala siga con vida D:

    • Raymond Ramírez

No muere. Deishu Kaiki va a visitar a Suruga Kanbaru en “Hanamonogatari” que ocurre meses despues. Kaiki la ayuda a ganar al “Demonio” que le quita el brazo de mono a Suruga.

  • Int usege

Well, it’s not like Kaiki wanted to teach her the importance of money. He wanted her to know that there are MANY things in this world, and romance is just one of them, all to achieve his own goal: for Nadeko to return being a human so she wouldn’t massacre Araragi’s lots. If Kanbaru and Senjougahara weren’t involved, he wouldn’t give a shit lol
