Nisekoi Episode 1 Review
“Promise”
“Yakusoku”
(ヤクソク)

What is the worth of a promise between two people who have yet to understand themselves much less explore the world around them? Can such a promise be sustained even if they are brought together again? Would they or the world around them have changed to much to fulfill the promise?

PLENTY OF TIME.

Oh man, doing those captions was too much fun. Holy shit.

One of the main points of the story is set up immediately and that is the promise about the locket. Now, we all know how promises like these between kids go in real life; most likely, people move on from their past and view it as nothing more than something that was a part of their foolish childhood past. The show makes it clear from the first episode, however, that the characters have already overcome that step. While it may not be realistic in that the chances of this happening in real life is very, very slim, we do need to suspend our disbelief especially in the initial chapters of a story if we are to even have one in the first place. We can use this established fact that Ichijou Raku and Onodera Kosaki have taken the promise to heart as a starting point of figuring out some of their characteristics. For Ichijou, keeping the locket is not such a big deal because he never got into a romantic relationship with anyone because of his goal to… become a civil servant even though he has a damn army of Yakuza. He really loses nothing from keeping it and at this point I doubt he views the marriage seriously as he seems to be mainly concerned with just meeting the girl who gave it this locket to him in the first place. From this, and the fact that he doesn’t want to lead the Yakuza, it’s fair to assume that he’s the type of person who wants to maintain the status-quo.

Although I don’t know how popular Onodera is, I’m sure that at least a few guys have tried to approach her and yet she has rejected all of them for the sake of the locket. Moreover, given how she’s reacting to Ichijou’s statements about the locket, she doesn’t even remember who the other person is either! It feels like they’re both living in some dream world waiting for their fantasy to be fulfilled. They are waiting for the day when fate will bring the two of them together. That thought may be enticing enough for Onodera to continue holding onto the key, and surely I’d accept that line of reasoning more than some faint “feeling” that the two may have about potentially meeting the one who they made the promise with. It’s obviously not going to be as simple as Onodera having the key to Ichijou’s locket though so I expect that uncertainty may arise or maybe someone with another key will appear to shake things up. Nevertheless, with the appearance of Kirisaki Chitoge, we start seeing some actual conflict within the show which slightly worries me in one way, the fact that they, Chitoge and Ichijou, may just be both tsunderes.

Currently, because only one episode has passed, we can dismiss their interactions as two people who just don’t see eye to eye. That doesn’t mean that they’re terrible people. They help out when they need feel that they’re responsible for their actions. Ichijou trying to help her at school with notes and Chitoge finding the locket are examples of this. I don’t mind if Ichijou learns more about Chitoge and becomes closer to her and vice versa. It’s proper development as long as the events they go through in the future change their personality, perspective, and so on. What is not proper development is just shoving random “dere” moments within all the “tsun.” Showing a “dere” side is not a replacement for character development. It’s just showing a side that was already there in the first place. Of course, it’s still a bit early to tell if she is even interested in him right now and is just acting cold towards him just because she’s a tsundere. The same goes for the male character. Regardless, I also have another worry about how annoying it may be for two people to just constantly bash each other every single episode. Hopefully they just won’t be mad at each other for most of the episode only for Chitoge or Ichijou to go “dere” at certain parts only to go back to being all angry right afterwards. That can be quite irritating.

Nisekoi Episode 1 Review

So it’s finally here, and damn does SHAFT deliver with this adaptation. I did check out the first chapter of the manga, and it is very loyal to it. However, it is SHAFT and you can notice certain visual cues displaying the feelings of an individual at certain times or the tension between Chitoge and Ichijou for instance. From the background to the grass to the sparkles and hearts, visually, this first episode is impressive. I am seriously not good at visual critique as I have to greatly force myself to notice some of these things, and I’m sure I missed plenty of little bits and pieces of relevant details that SHAFT put in, so if you’re not me, you can probably appreciate it even more. I have pointed out some of my worries for future developments between Chitoge and Ichijou above, but this episode by itself is perfectly fine. While their back and forth remarks didn’t exactly make me laugh much, it is still amusing to watch certain parts such as the barrel throwing and the random destruction caused by the Yakuza. I suppose as long as it stays away from having annoying tsunderes and some actual romance going on without being dragged out then I’ll be happy. That, or some Yakuza action which will give us some decent comedy. I heard that the manga does get dragged out later on to which I say that I’d much rather have an original anime ending than having it drag on forever with no proper resolution. Well, it should be an interesting series to keep your eye on in this slow season since it is SHAFT.

Yes, the best of this season has come and what do I have here? Nisekoi getting shafted?? This could be interesting.. I will be sure to looking forward for the rest of the season.. Hope it stay true to the manga till the end..

What do I see up there?? Shokugeki no Soma? LOL.. That manga need an adaptation already, I cannot wait for when we got to see ‘foodgasm’ being animated, and the badass expression from them time to time, and it’s only a cooking manga.. :)

p/s: the main character of the manga is my avatar..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I just hope the foodgasms won’t be messed up. Since the manga is so well drawn, I do hope a decent amount of budget goes into the anime should it ever be adapted.

      • EvilNemesis

The trend that started 2 years ago of enlisting the help of H-mangakas for non-H mangas is really awesome. Some of them have incredible art.

I remember years ago with Tasogare Otome X Amnesia, I was like, this is Maybe’s Art what the hell!? And then fast forward a little bit, every few months when I check a new series’ first chapter or prologue I see some familiar art that normally isn’t on this side of the force, so to speak.

        As for Nisekoi…

Nice head tilts caption on this review, I pretty much skipped over it because I won’t be watching. I’ve already read a decent portion of the manga and have dropped it months ago. Something about not talking about the pendant for 40 chapters doesn’t quite sit well with me. I have way too many mangas that I follow anyway, cute girls can be found anywhere.

Nisekoi is like women IRL, they have to have some meat around dem bones y’know? Gotta have some plot that moves forward at some point.

  • omgITSorange

Oh man, Nisekoi got shafted. This might be interesting! Also..

I CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW MUCH FUN YOU HAD DOING THE CAPTIONS! XD

RUBBER BRINGS GREAT JOY TO OUR LIVES.

  • MgMaster

I liked it,more than I expected actually. I’m sure we can all agree that this isn’t gonna be anything breathtaking so we should keep our eyes on the execution,as with most RomComs. For now,my average expectations went up to above average. Having SHAFT written all over it is definitely a plus but I can see how this show can get annoying if they drag it out for too long.

Does anyone know how many episodes will this be? I assume 2-cours? To me,it looks like the type of show that could work just fine with a single cour too but we’ll see.

  • sweN

    Thanks for your review !
I hope there will be an original anime ending as well because I can’t stand the manga anymore… If I’m not wrong, will there be 25 episodes ?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      Thanks for reading!

20 episodes actually. I’m really worried about how this will end. I don’t know if Weekly Shounen Jump would agree to give the license to SHAFT if they make an anime original ending. They want to milk that shit.

  • Fey

Initially I thought it just another of those “anime” but I’m wrong, going back to the manga as well.

P.S are you really not going to do a review for Buddy Complex? The similarity between that and Valvrave is glowing.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Nope, nothing much to talk about right now. Maybe when it gets more crazy because aside from the time travel aspect, everything else is incredibly generic.

  • Ian Porterfield

I’m gonna have the best fun reading your captions, aren’t I? Also…

Ichijou has the right to be angry. You just can’t separate a man from his rubber like that.

  • Akizaki Ranho

Maaaaan… I felt the episode lacked energy and you know what? I blame SHAFT for that! This isn’t “Denpa Onna”. Nor “Soredemo Machi”. “Arakawa under the Bridge”, “Sasami-san” or “Maria Holic”. In other words with Nisekoi they aren’t adapting weird source material, but a straightforward shounen romcom. So the SHAFTness (random close-ups that aren’t done for dramatic effect, head tilts and the contrast between dark shadows and white-washed colours) just…doesn’t work. I may be biased of course since I’m not a fan of their style of presentation (though I did enjoy some of the shows I mentioned above regardless, the first three especially) but the episode, which lacked anything of note to talk about (“help me look for my pendant you tsundere bitch!” plot) seemed even more subdued due to the SHAFT treatment. I see myself dropping this real soon if the story doesn’t make up for it. There really is a limit to what you can bend to your unique (old?) style.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Honestly, I think SHAFT adds to the typical RomCom situation with visual cues representing character mood and so on. I don’t think it’s as much SHAFT’s fault as it is the source material’s for lacking anything of note to talk about. And I don’t think the plot is more subdued either. I mean, imagine it being animated normally. Would that have added more to the storytelling? I really don’t think so.

It’s fine if you don’t like it, but I think you may be putting too much blame on SHAFT and not the actual material they are given to adapt.

      • Akizaki Ranho

Yeah, that’s what I did. I imagined it animated normally in which case what we would have gotten was another “D-Frag”: loud, dumb, shounen fun with tons of energy and stupidity that I could set my brain aside for.
But with the use of so many intimate close-ups/long shots that work better in languidly paced slice of life comedy anime (Denpa Onna, Arakawa, Soremachi), this show just seemed somehow less manic to me (it doesn’t help that as someone who expects a close-up to mean “Pay attention here”, it’s usually done in a SHAFT production as part of their trademark style).
Because their style DOES work, even with my lack of fondness for it and as such I still held hope in my heart for this show despite hearing it would be getting the SHAFT treatment. They could do something new with it, is what I thought.
Instead I found myself rolling my eyes at a self back-patting Zetsubou Sensei I’m In Despair Head Turn.
Anyway, this is just the first episode. And you’re probably right about the source material being more at fault. Still if the show continues to bore I guess the next time you’ll see me commenting on one of your reviews will be on… um… Chuunibyou 2 (since there’s a lot of stuff you probably won’t be covering this awful anime season due to nothing to write about)?
I SWEAR I got the vibe from the first season that Morisummer had the hots for MC’s friend.

        • Akizaki Ranho

Just saw your comment about not reviewing Chunnibyou 2 episodically. So I guess…Nagi no Asukara then? lol
Man this season is just as bad as summer 2013. Nothing but throwaway entertainment…

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s not just this anime season. Episodically, there’s no way I can keep writing remotely insightful reviews. That’s what ended up happening on reviews I’ve had before. However, there are certain shows like Monogatari, Psycho-Pass, Shin Sekai Yori, and so on that have things worthy of note at least once every few episodes. There are also shows like Kyoukai no Kanata which have areas worthy of critique quite often. Most of the time it just ends up being episodes that are pretty bad because then I can go in-depth as to why I think it didn’t do a great job portraying whatever and so on. So yeah, it depends on the episode.
