MAGNIFICENT CHESS MATCH.

What an enjoyable episode.
No Game No Life Episode 3 Review
“Expert.”

While I would have liked some more thought-provoking and strategic games, there are times when the level of entertainment is so great that it overwhelms almost everything else.

I don’t know much about chess or anything, but apparently this move is supposed to make the game longer so that they can figure out the trick behind this game.

IT’S OVER?
I usually don’t mind waiting a week, but holy shit I need my dose now.

I’d love to just gush about this episode right off the bat, but I’ll leave that for the review section. Let’s take a more serious look at some things that Sora says during this absurd game. I know, some parts are obviously for comedy. However, some parts are still worth delving a bit deeper into like how Sora says, “Throughout all of history, no wise king has ever forced his army to obey him through oppression.” If you’ve read The Prince, you’d know that Machiavelli says something along the lines of “It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.” It’s easier to instill fear in people than it is for you to try to get people to love you, and fear is also less fickle than love. Love will also not stop those small percentage of people who are bound to detest you no matter what you do. It is even more important to note the “if you cannot be both” part as that’s the one Machiavelli says rulers should aim to become. It’s ideal to be loved because the people will be more productive, make it difficult for others to usurp the throne, and defend you willingly against enemies. It’s also ideal to be feared at the same time so that even the small percentage who are bound to detest you, as within any large kingdom there undoubtedly will, will never commit to any serious act in fear of the consequences. Perhaps it’s also possible that the people who love you will love you even more if they fear you at the same time because they’d be glad that you do not exercise such fear and oppress them.

But of course, this is advice for rulers and not advice on how to inspire your soldiers to win a battle. In the city, citizens fear the king because of the threat of death. To avoid this, they must simply do as they are told and continue on with their lives. On the battlefield, that all changes. They face the threat of death either way, and the fear of disobeying the orders of the commander has far less clout. It is either the sword of the enemy through their heart or the axe of the executioner on their neck. The potential consequences are much more balanced in this case as the worst case scenario for both is death. This is why a king capable of inspiring armies to move according to their own will is so crucial in this case. We no longer look at what is the worst scenario; we look at what becomes of the best scenario. Will you protect the king who you believe will lead your kingdom to prosperity or will you protect the king who you only fear and do not venerate? What will strengthen you? The thought of being executed for disobeying orders or fighting for what you believe to be worth risking your life for? Those who are oppressed and fear the weapons of their allies will only be overwhelmed by the frightening morale of those who fight with their own just causes in mind. It is a dull blade of fear against a sharpened blade of resolve. Skills of the soldiers mostly equal, the outcome is clear. And if not by brute strength then persuasion will be the weapon of Sora and Shiro. To weaken the will of the opponent and make them give up through the lack of hope is another way they can attain victory.

No Game No Life Episode 3 Review

Can I just say how much I fucking loved watching this episode? If you’ve followed me during the Valvrave days, you’d know that I’m a sucker for absurdities and crazy things happening in or outside the realm of logic. Even though No Game No Life may not have matched my expectations strategy-wise, it is certainly not devoid of any mind games and logic which make the absurd events even better. This episode of quality entertainment does have a suitable amount of logic behind it. From the beginning of the game it was hinted that this nothing close to a normal chess match with how Zell commanded her forces. After the hesitance of the pieces to approach Zell’s forces, I’m sure most of you also realized along with Sora that this is mostly a game of morale with small bits of strategy tacked on. It’s still an extremely logical progression of events, but it just doesn’t have the allure of the mind games that other shows like Death Note may have. But that doesn’t really matter because that’s not really the selling point of the show.

In my first episode review, I asked what this show is going to be. “Is it going to rely on logical outcomes and clever schemes like Kaiji? Will it just rely on flashiness to try and cover the surface-level mind games? Maybe it’ll be somewhere in between? I’m hoping and expecting for it to be the first.” It’s clearly not the first, but it’s also not a show that relies mostly on flashiness to try and cover up the surface-level mind games. If anything, the level of creativity on the writer’s part is what truly impresses me. This chess game focuses on lateral thinking. It’s not strictly a game of logic anymore. It’s about trying to understand what this unique game is really about, and to what extent can the player manipulate the game to his or her advantage. To do this, one needs to think outside of the box and come up with some ingenious methods of swaying the flow of battle. The writer does this brilliantly by having Sora incite the soldiers through a magnificent speech that not only uncovers the true nature of the game, but is also damn exciting to watch. Sora even counters Zell’s brainwashing with some brainwashing of his own in the form of emotional appeal.

This game is all about creativity and seeing what other unexpected methods the characters can use to win, and I love it. It’s not as if the game doesn’t make any sense either. There are rules, but they’re just not as rigid and clearly defined as a typical chess match. While that may lessen the strategic side of the game, it greatly bolsters the creative side. The style of the show also matches these absurd turn of events well with lines like “Huh? In a real war, what fool waits for their enemy’s ‘turn?'” Also, I must say that Sora really impressed me this episode and Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is doing a fantastic job screaming his heart out. I may have doubted him before as he reminds me of a certain Gary Stu, but he really does do a great job this episode inciting his forces. The morale-boosting speeches, and the heartfelt appeal to have the queen switch sides would not have had the same impact without the amount of emotion put behind the voice acting. This is just one wonderfully exciting episode filled with one thrilling development after another. It’s similar to the rush I got when I watched Valvrave, but with logic to back it up instead of pure nonsensical mind-blowing plot points. But hey, I understand if it’s not your thing. It is certainly my kind of anime though. The creative approach of tackling these games along with a great male lead has me hooked. Let the glorious games continue!

That’s fine. Just give a source and don’t post the entire thing. I don’t think it’s necessary to post the impressions section, and you can just highlight certain parts of the review. Also, send me a link where you post it.

I actually would have preferred if you didn’t copy and paste the whole thing. It’s a wall of text and you can summarize my points in a far more concise way to get the general point across. I mean, when you cite a book, you’re not going to cite a whole page. Just a tip for next time if you plan to use other people’s work. It makes your point much stronger and I think it’ll be easier for people to read as well.

its good. Type of shoujo anime i can watch and love. Like kamisama kiss or tonari kaibutsu-kun. This season needed something like this.

      • niknasr

I didn’t watch shoujo much because I didn’t really like reverse harem type or intend-to-be reverse harem.. the only shoujo animu I watched is Kaichou wa Maid-sama, and what do you know? It’s totally adorable and really entertaining..

Chess has its allure and this has its allure. They each have their appeal which is what makes them both great.

The JoJo part is a reference to Part 4’s Kishibe Rohan, who says exactly that (see here http://www.batoto.net/read/_/148145/jojos-bizarre-adventure-part-4-diamond-is-unbreakable_v41_ch386_by_the-invincible-trio/11 ). They pretty much quote it word for word (heck, “But I refuse” is actually a tag on pixiv, so it’s a bit of a meme).

I had read like 2 chapters of the manga (up to “Stéphanie shows up in a bedsheet”) and thought it was a fun premise, and I decided to give the anime a try and I’m not disappointed AT ALL. This show knows how to be fun.
The Ace Attorney ref too… That was high level right there haha.
This episode showed off well how Sora and Shiro are complementary I think. Shiro was doing well until the pieces stopped obeying, then Sora took over and quite fantastically so, but then he lost himself in his plan. Not like anyone could have expected brainwashing to come into play.
Those siblings are just awesome though, it’s their attitude that really does it. And that’s part of the show’s charm.
I don’t really know what else to say, it’s just fun and good. Very good animation quality too.
    It’s good /sagenod

Never mind the knight; the chessboard is 8×7 in that one shot.

And yeah, 1. d4 results in a more *positional* or closed game, that’s more about maneuvering, than 1. e4, which usually result in a more *tactical* game that is focused on outsmarting your opponent move-to-move.

      Good lord, you’re right.
