So I ended up thinking about this game in completely the wrong way. I thought that they already played a game like this and somehow they were playing against the Warbeasts or something. Over-thinking things is something that I am prone to do when I get enthusiastic trying to solve something I find very intriguing. Regardless, the whole game is in front of us now, so I’ll be going over the game as a whole as I see that some people are a bit confused as to how this game unfolded.

Now fuc-
TOO SOON.

This is a game of existence. Each of the stones will represent a part of that person, and should it be turned over to the opposite color, that person will lose that part of his or her existence while the opponent will gain it. Obviously, it’d be strange for Kurami to suddenly sprout four arms or something like that when she takes part of Sora’s existence, so don’t be too nit-picky on that regard. I wouldn’t want to see some random abominations in MUH ANIMU. Anyways, the other important rule is that should the player fail to continue, his or her partner will play in his or her stead. Now, one could look at this and say that it’s strange that Shiro still remembers Sora as this rule says nothing of the sort. Hold on to that thought for a bit; it’ll be addressed later. Kurami and Sora play the game, and because Sora’s KEIKAKU IS SO DOORI (PLAN IS SO ACCORDING- waitwat), he plays with Kurami’s mind. She plays the way he wants her to play so that Shiro can finally take over in the end. While we’re not shown exactly how this is done, we can guess that Kurami receiving pieces of Sora’s memories gave Sora the opportunity to psychologically manipulate her actions even further. He’d lure her into making moves that seem to give her the win when in fact it’ll only solidify his own victory.

Eventually, Sora’s existence is wiped out. Kurami thinks she won, but the rule regarding the partner taking over the player still applies. How does Shiro still remember Sora when his existence is taken by the enemy? Her replacing him as a player does not in and of itself give her memories, but wait! Look at the third piece. It says, “Three: the way to win the game.” This means that Shiro should still have enough memories of Sora so that she can achieve victory. In other words, this piece gives Shiro the bare minimum amount of information for her to win hence why she struggled so much to figure everything out. She doesn’t have all of her memories of him because if she did, she wouldn’t have to imagine how Sora played. She’d just remember from the game she was watching. The second and first pieces are more symbolic of how he really feels more than anything else. It emphasizes how he’d be at a loss without her. I mean, just imagine if somehow the first piece got taken before his existence. It wouldn’t even matter that he exists because to him, he doesn’t truly exist without Shiro. If the piece got taken, he would be unable to continue the game. If everything about Shiro were to be taken away from him, he’ll be a husk of the man we know him to be. That’s how important Shiro is to him. That’s how strong their relationship is together. I can’t even imagine what he’d be like without her. Probably some psychopath out to destroy everythi- Oh wait.

There are some valid concerns about some parts of this episode. For example, how did Shiro know exactly where to sit? How did she know what color she would use? (Though, I think this point is fairly obvious if you know that “Shiro” means “white.”) What happened on day 19 and 20? I dabbled a bit in the light novel to find out more about these things, and sure enough, there are plenty of details in the source material that will address most of your concerns. Therefore, I’d recommend that you read the source material for this part of the anime if you wish to know more. Please do not post any links in the comments. Google it and find it yourself. Perhaps more important than any of those things above, this anime skips over what Kurami thinks of her new memories of Sora. That is, the emphasis and tone is quite different in the anime compared to the original. Sure, Kurami trusts Sora now, but she’s all smiles when in fact his past is not all smiles. The light novel doesn’t go into detail right then and there, but it gives a bit more insight into the background of Sora as a character implicitly. Yeah, I’m saying that he may just be a bit fucked up in the head even with a glorious loli imouto backing him up. Imagine if he didn’t have one… Good lord…

No Game No Life Episode 9 Review

Usually I’d just leave this section blank because I’d just be me saying nothing but praises which would be incredibly boring to read, but it’s worth looking at this episode a bit more critically as it is the one that feels the most off in terms of pacing. Light novel readers will know exactly what I’m talking about as the anime did skip quite a bit of material, but even before reading this part in the light novel, I just felt that this episode could have really used a few more minutes. I don’t mean this in the way that the game didn’t make sense like what some people are saying. I mean sure, you can probably find a way that puts a few holes in this game if you really think about it, but the general idea of the game, as well as the solution itself, are both very clear. I just think it could have used a few more minutes to be even better. For example, exactly how did Sora outwit Kurami? What psychological tactics did he use? Then there are of course are also other parts that the anime skipped that are in the light novel which are fairly important. It’s not that this episode’s pacing is horrendous by any means. It’s still quite good, and overall, this show has stellar pacing. For what it manages to do in this episode, it does well, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to just overlook the show’s slight pacing flaws just because of its fixed length.

One other thing I will note is that I can’t quite feel the connection I’d like to have towards Shiro and Sora. The relationship between them is there… but somehow it just doesn’t feel quite as solid as I’d like it to be. A lot of this is probably due to our lack of understanding of how they became the way they are, and what exactly their backstory is. For me to be truly invested in the characters, I need to understand more of their motives and their past which have both been lacking in the nine episodes that have aired so far. It does help that someone managed to dig deep to find some very interesting things surrounding Shiro and Sora’s names. You can read all about it here. (I highly recommend it.) We just know Shiro and Sora to be absolute badasses of ultimate intellect who crush all their foes to realize their ambitions of dominating the fluffy kingdom and defeating Tet, but surely there is something much more than that. I know there is, and I’m still waiting for the episode where we see more of who they really are. An expanded version of the beginning part of this episode would be a great step in that direction.

Although I’d also like to talk about how some people are exaggerating how good this anime really is and are over-hyping this show to the extent where some new viewers may set their expectations too high, I’ll save it for now and see just how overrated this anime is by the end. You can be certain that I’ll be making a full review of this anime when it does finish in three weeks because I need to express my thoughts about the various different opinions that people hold. Some utterly despise this show, and others praise it too highly. Some despise it because it’s popular even though they deny that they’re being influenced, and perhaps there are even some others who realize such people exist and praise the anime more highly to “balance things out.” None of these groups of people I really agree with even though I understand where they’re coming from. But anyways, I’ll leave that for later. Maybe you can contemplate whether you think the opinions some people hold are too extreme or not. Whatever the case, LET THE GAMES CONTINUE!

“For me to be truly invested in the characters, I need to understand more of their motives and their past which have both been lacking in the nine episodes that have aired so far”

Im glad you mention that because that’s the exact same problem i have with their relationship; i thought i was the only one who thought that. I dont know if it has to do with the adaptation or the source material, but i cant buy into the psychosis regarding their relationship. Perhaps the author’s goal is not to be intricate about the psychology of the siblings (even though they tend to wave it around as a crucial character plot point), but more importantly for the audience to get the general picture that the only thing these two siblings have is each other, and i guess that’s fine….i can vibe with that.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m pretty sure the series will explain it sooner or later. It’s just that nine episodes have passed, and we haven’t seen much of that at all which is concerning.

      • ecskdee

The anime left out a part from the LN after the game where Kurami says “How can you stay sane after what you’ve experienced?” (implying something tragic happened to him in the past?). Then Sora says “is there anyone who thinks I’m sane?” (which was hilarious).

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha, yeah. She has a totally different reaction in the anime.

  • ddab

:P Well this episode was a whole book in the LN and deals with alot of mental aspects, and it has to be said that I was pretty certain that this section of the anime would not be as good as the previous ones. I say this simply because there are few ways to effectively show mental dilemas in an anime/live action setting without resorting to naration, or verry long winded methods.

Not to say that i am not disapointed by how this episode turned out, hopefully the next one will be better.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, there’s a lot of internal dialogue and thoughts in the light novel for this part. My expectations are already incredibly high for this series, and this episode made me realize that I need to tone things down a bit, haha.

  • Zerriet

I absolutely agree with what you have stated, NGNL is nothing short of fantastic, however there are some really minor things they should strenghten and one of them is the sibling bond. It is strong indeed and i can feel it since it goes with the whole shut in to salvation theme, it just needs a little push to make it good. That would really make this the perfect anime since everything else is already so good

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Careful using the phrase “perfect anime.” Perfection doesn’t only mean that there are no huge flaws, but that nothing can improve. Almost every single thing can be improved upon one way or another, and NGNL is definitely no exception. I very much enjoy the show, but please be very mindful of your words especially extremely strong ones like “perfect.”

      • Zerriet

I guess maybe the correct word would be aots, but in all honesty, the anime is able strike a delicate balance of everything and because each of these aspects are done so well, it really makes it seem like a success. If you were uncomfortable with me saying it was near perfection, my apologies.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s not so much that I greatly mind as much as I think the word has effect on people in general. Saying something is “perfect” is an unfair representation of what the actual show is, and there are people who get very defensive when that word is brought up. I do too because it’s often not even close to the right word to use and people throw it around carelessly which is seriously not a good thing. It allows people to raise their expectations too high, and others to condemn those who say it’s “perfect” creating unnecessary rifts between viewers.

The nitpicks people have can be overlooked, but that still doesn’t make the anime “perfect.” Since I am a critic, I try to be as careful with my wording as possible because I know what kind of effect that can have on readers. I wouldn’t want any of them to get the wrong idea. If everyone could just be a bit more careful, then maybe people wouldn’t put their expectations so high, and we wouldn’t really have to discuss semantics so that we can focus on discussing the show itself.

          • Zerriet

Ah now I understand what you mean since I do review some anime myself. I think I was maybe a little too careless with my wording since I did take it from an objective point of view, saying that It accomplished what it wanted to present very well. Many thanks for the reminder

          • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

            No problem!

  • MACHA

As the others below have mentioned, you’re absolutely right that NGNL needs to go deeper into what really made Shiro’s and Sora’s relationship the way it is.

I’m not exactly in the loop with the hype around this show. Is it really that much over-hype? Are people hyping to AOT extreme levels? It’s a really good anime. Really. Good. But it’s not perfect. Few shows are flawless, if any.

“Sora’s KEIKAKU IS SO DOORI” is the single most epic sentence I’ve read today.

Time to read the captions! :D

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, if you read any other place of discussion whether it be Animesuki, MAL, Reddit, and so on, the hype is real.

CAN’T GET MORE DOORI THAN SORA’S KEIKAKU.

  • Blablabla

I’m a bit confused about why they had to do all this just to get the Elf’s cooperation. Why didn’t Shiro know anything about this game? If this is a two-player game, why did Sora leave Shiro out on knowing about the game? Or was it because Shiro forgot her memories of the game?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Kurami and the elf doesn’t want to cooperate with Sora and Shiro because they don’t trust them. They thought they were working with a different race or something. Shiro didn’t know anything about the game because it’s part of the game. Sora tricks Kurami into thinking she’s one when in fact she’s playing right into her hands. Shiro knows about the game, but because Sora’s existence piece got taken among other things, she didn’t know anything aside from the bare minimum required for her to win when that happened. This is why in this case, it wouldn’t have mattered if Sora told Shiro exactly what he would do because those memories would be taken in the later stages of the game anyways.

  • Zerriet

Entrav, some people on the mal forums have been complaining about how the chess bored scene was illogical. Does it necessarily break the episode?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s not “illogical.” It’s just not as logically strong as some people would have liked, but it doesn’t step over the line to where it doesn’t make sense. Everything that happened in that game makes sense within the context of the game. Those people need to stop treating lateral thinking as a non-valid method of tackling a game. People like that really just like seeing rigid rules and the players adhere to that, and while I can certainly see how that’s awesome, it doesn’t mean that the game chess game doesn’t have rules. It’s just not strictly defined, and people think it’s full of ass-pulls.

Personally, I didn’t like how that game ended with the assassination, but by no means did the game make no sense. Of course, I’m not going to say that it’s on the same level of mind games as something like Kaiji. If people were going in having those kinds of false hopes, then they need to adjust their expectations. This is not that type of a show. The exciting delivery of the episode greatly captivated me, and it made a decent amount of sense. If they think it’s full of ass-pulls and can’t be convinced otherwise, then just leave them. If they want to discuss, let them discuss. I already talked to a few people about the episode anyways so I can talk to anyone else about that kind of stuff as long as they are open-minded.

      • Zerriet

i see, thank you for your insight. I also wanted to mention about the chess scene in this episode where supposedly Shiro was already in checkmate and had no option of winning Jibril, so many people are supposedly calling it another ass-pull. Whether it be an animation error or Jibril simply giving Shiro the benefit of doubt, what are your views?

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I noticed that too, but honestly, that actually doesn’t matter at all. The point of that scene is to just have Shiro realize that Sora is still alive and not to emphasize the chess game. It’s absolutely ridiculous to call it an ass-pull when the game itself doesn’t even matter. At all. To see why, let’s say that she didn’t make an “illegal move” or whatever. Does that change anything? No. The move she makes doesn’t even matter in the grand scheme of things one little bit.

If something like this happened in any of the major games, then it would be a huge problem, but it’s not a big deal at all. If they really want to criticize this part of the episode, then maybe they should have just said it was stupid and not an ass-pull. All ass-pulls are stupid, but not all stupid scenarios are ass-pulls. There are differences. Anyways, nit-picking this aspect is like nit-picking some animation inconsistencies in the background or something like that. If someone touches upon it, that’s perfectly fine, but focusing on that one aspect too much is critiquing for the sake of critiquing.

Well, that was a let down… From comments I had seen it seemed like this episode was going to be the second AND third coming of Jesus Christ and that all questions in the universe would be solved. By no means am I saying this episode is bad, it’s just that it didn’t reach the level it was apparently trying to achieve, just as you said: overhyped.

Honestly the game against Jibril was far more interesting and exciting than this, they barely touched on any strategic aspect here and at least I didn’t feel any excitement.

Anyways I hope the show will put on display more “active” games than this one.
