Resentment, fear, envy, desperation, sadness, greed… Temptation is relentless and the will to resist isn’t. We can only hope to deal with it for it will exist as long as we do.

GOT TO GET ON THAT YATO.

When Yato first saw Yukine and used him, he did note that Yukine was in a troublesome age. Being fourteen, he hasn’t matured enough to deal with the temptation that comes with just living much less the temptation that comes with being a Regalia capable of doing things that he wasn’t before. It’s not as if he is just a “bad kid” and that’s that. A combination of his past and the current environment allow him to succumb to temptation. We see from the brief flashes when Yato says that “Yukine is afraid of the dark” that he probably didn’t have a proper upbringing. He was either neglected by his family, or his family broke up and left him alone. He says to the little girl at the end that he doesn’t have a family. What does this really mean? Is his family actually dead? Does he not know where his family is? Does he not want to be associated with his family? Is it because he’s a Regalia now? But I think the most likely case is that his family simply anymore doesn’t exist because it broke up. Under normal circumstances, proper upbringing allows parents to set what’s “right” and “wrong.” Yes, I know, it gets far more complicated than that, but we don’t need to be philosophers to identify the common wrongs of our world such as stealing when it’s not absolutely necessary for one’s survival, and so on. Heck, even if a child had a proper upbringing, there’s no guarantee that he or she wouldn’t steal given Yukine’s ability to not be noticed. The thing is that, there are no consequences anymore for Yukine. When he was a human, there’s risk, and a lot of the time it’s simply not worth it to commit crimes. With the risk mostly gone, at least to him, it’s far more tempting for him to just snatch something and be done with it. There’s no real punishment. There’s only his morals, his own sense of right and wrong, his own values that will stop him which are all already weak to begin with given his background and age.

And what about Yato? He feels that Yukine is indeed doing something wrong, but at the same time, he’s not doing anything about it. He’s not lecturing Yukine. He’s not lecturing Hiyori either even though he’s getting hurt. He’s not trying to make right of what’s wrong, but why? Is he trying to deliver the ultimate “divine punishment” once Yukine has sinned enough? Is he trying to give Hiyori a chance to set things straight? Or maybe, he wants to understand exactly what pains him so he can differentiate between what is right and wrong? The relationship between Regalia and Gods is actually quite interesting. These Gods have no limitations to speak of. They don’t have to adhere to any law created by human beings. They can kill, they can steal, they can sin, and they can do whatever they want! However, to stand a chance against Phantoms, they must also have Regalia who were once human beings. While the Gods may sin and no one will feel anything, such behavior would probably encourage Regalia to also sin which actually ends up hurting Gods. I’m not sure how much power Yato holds over Yukine, but it seems that Yato can’t just impose limitations on his actions that would render him, for example, unable to steal. The relationship between Yato and Yukine can then be seen as a parent-child one where Yato has to guide Yukine to make sure he doesn’t give in to temptation. In the process, Yato learns first hand what temptation really is and what he should and shouldn’t do. Well, why doesn’t Yato just commit sins while Yukine doesn’t do a thing? Wouldn’t that get over this system? Not exactly. Remember that Yukine’s very thoughts can hurt Yato. If Yato commits all the sins while Yukine remains idle, he’ll think that he’s allowed to do it too. He’ll think that it’s fine to give in to temptation. Consciously or subconsciously, it’ll influence him, and Yato will feel the pain of those thoughts. It’s actually quite a lovely relationship.

Noragami Episode 5 Review

I actually read quite a few chapters of the manga so jumping into the anime and enjoying it didn’t actually happen even though I enjoyed the chapters that I read. When you know what’s going to happen and how it’s going to happen, it takes a large chunk of the experience away. Even so, it is a different experience to see the comedy and the more serious side of things animated well. Some shows fall into the dangerous trap of trying to have humorous moments in the midst of a serious scene. While incorporating the humor in those kind of instances are definitely not impossible, as shown by Hataraku Maou-sama!, it’s difficult to pull off properly. In this episode, Noragami clearly separates the humor from the serious focusing solely on one aspect at a time. I’m very glad that the creepiness of the Phantoms portrayed in the second half of this episode is done well because otherwise they’d just be forgettable beings that don’t add much to the anime. The creepy atmosphere that they give off is something that gives the more serious side of this anime more weight and tension. Even the way Yato switches between his silly side and more serious side is never awkward, and his mysterious personality and past never ceases to intrigue me. Overall, if I could use one word to describe Noragami it has to be “solid.” While it doesn’t do anything exceptional, it still does what it tries to do well. With that said, I can safely say that I am now enjoying Noragami quite a bit.

I am glad you are enjoying t despite you having read the manga. With your post saw new things. Yato can get hurt by Yukine’s huge sinning. While Gods may not be tied by humans right or wrong limitations then a regalia is a sort of limitation to an extent.

I think that Noragami is one of the best shows of the winter. My thoughts echo yours where the ‘while it doesn’t do anything exceptional, it still does what it tries to do well’ part is concerned. The result seems to be a solid, well-executed show. The comedy is still awesome after 5 episodes and almost every episode manages to combine serious and light-hearted moments well. It’s a pity that it’s slated for only 12 episodes.

Noragami will be getting 2 OVAs.

The 1st OVA will be released with limited-ed copies of vol 10 of the manga.

The 2nd OVA will come with limited-ed copies of vol 11 of the manga.

A season 2 will depend on BD+manga sales, and whether there’s enough material to animate by then.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yep, definitely one of the strongest shows of Winter seeing that it’s not a particular strong season to begin with. A season 2 may be possible depending on sales.

I got a suggestion: how about doing a list of your favorite characters from 2013 or OF ALL TIME. Okay, that last one’s a bit too broad, but think of the nostalgia it’ll bring with it~ :D

Do it for Shoko. (runs away)

Doing another list currently for 2013, but I am definitely thinking about doing one for the characters too.

If it’s for Touma, ERU ERUFU, Shoko, Kaiki, and all dem characters then I’m willing to do it. Hopefully I can find the time to.

Yeah, that has something to do with it though I never really found the manga that funny to begin with.

When you know what’s going to happen and how it’s going to happen, it takes a large chunk of the experience away.

Oh yes…I remember reading the entire Mirai Nikki manga when only 3-4 episodes were out and damn, while I still enjoyed the show I wasn’t looking forward to it nearly as much.

Solid is a word that could describe a lot of BONES shows I think, although they tend to gradually get a bit better(maybe with few exceptions, like how a lot of people though Zetsuen No Tempest’s 2nd half to be weaker than the 1st,although not by much). Like, this was my favorite episode of Noragami so far and I’m starting to like it more & more each week. Also, even though the show didn’t have any humorous moments in the midst of a serious scenes,it did a nice job of using said hilarious moments, such as Yukine’s pervy thoughts about Hiyori,as part of Yato’s discussion with Hiyori about regalia giving into temptation.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yep, Zetsuen fits the category of being “solid” pretty well.

I think many people will like the next arc coming up. It’s pretty serious stuff.

  • Shiina

Why do they have to jumble the scenes from the manga and remove some things as well? (please enlighten me here :) i dunno why they do this) I have read the first 6 chapters and am not planning to continue reading it (as you said, it takes a large chunk of experience away)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Remember, with all adaptations there has to be sacrifices. Manga, light novels, and anime are all different from one another and it’s often not ideal for an anime to adapt every single thing shown in the manga or light novel because of budget or time constraints. Some parts flow a bit better anime-wise if they jumble it up. It’s just the nature of the adaptations.

      • Shiina

So that’s how it is. Now I know.

      • MACHA

With one exception (that I know of): MONSTER
The anime is an exact replica of the manga. AND. IT. WAS. EPIC.

        • The Atomic Dwarf

Definitely agree with you on that one, but….

There is one other case: Full Metal Alchemist.

Rather than adapting the manga, they just went with an original story and re-launched the series as FMA Brotherhood once the manga ended.

          • MACHA

            Oh yeah! Agreed!
I forgot about that one. It’s rare for an anime adaption to go with an original story and pull it off as well as FMA did.

I’d say FMA Brotherhood and Monster are like the extremes of a spectrum where you have anime adaption independant of the manga/light novel on one end (FMA Brotherhood is by far the only one that did it really well) and anime adaption faithful to the manga on the other (Monster being a carbon copy of the manga that did exceptionally really well).
Within the spectrum there’s tons of anime that either does it good, decent, meh, or plain bad.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

From the twenty or so episodes I’ve watched of Monster, I have to absolutely agree with you. I know, I should finish it, but man, I wanted to savour it and things came up so I’ll just watch it from the beginning again later.

          • MACHA

My browser’s being a pain, so now I’m writing this for the third time (it’s not even long)

Fair warning if you plan to marathon it: do it when you have at least 2 weeks off. You’ll need that extra week to recover from Monster Week and do anything you didn’t do then (like eat, sleep, and stuff :p)
If you find yourself going to watch a third episode in a row, YOU WILL MARATHON IT. I don’t know how, but once you pass 3 episodes back-to-back, it’s really hard to stop.

          • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m pretty good at controlling myself. I was watching 1-2 episodes a day and taking my time with it before I stopped watching.

          • MACHA

            Respect to you, man.
I can do that with most anime, but sadly it didn’t work for that one :p
BEST TWO WEEKS OF MY LIFE

          • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I can totally see why some people just can’t stop. It’s very difficult to stop for Monster especially because the pacing is literally perfect and everything builds up one after another flawlessly which makes you really want to continue watching no matter what.

I’m really looking forward to watching it later when summer comes around.

Now, I know why this is one of the best-selling manga in Japan.. From an anime-only viewer I can say after 5 episodes this has been pretty solid with good story and characters..

Unfortunately, I’ve also been wondering after the latest episode (ep 5), I’m still cannot quite grasp what the story wants or the way the anime will go, maybe because of that I’m still feeling lost and cannot fully like the anime as I wanted to.. If anyone can provide insight for this anime particularly, I will be really grateful

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Really? It’s one of the best-selling manga in Japan? I didn’t even know that.

Well, as with many other manga, I think it’ll just consist of random arcs that delve into certain themes. I think the direction will be a bit clearer in the next few episodes as it becomes more serious.

      • niknasr

Maybe best-selling manga is an overstatement, but I saw it in top 50 weekly sales manga when its latest volume released, it must say something, right?

Yeah, will be looking forward to it.. I hope I can develop love for this anime soon..
