Oreimo Season 2 Episode 10 Review
“My Little Sister Can’t Wear a Wedding Dress”
“Ore no Imōto ga Uedingu Doresu o Kiru Wake ga Nai”

After a rage-worthy episode for some, we’ve moved into yet another phase of the anime where Kirino and Kyousuke start to get closer. But what about Ayase? Why is she taking a lot of screentime this time around? What about this episode as a whole? Is the studio really using all the episodes wisely?

More yandere Ayase?

Use. Yeah. Use.

Ayase Aragaki angry

It’s obvious that Kyousuke always acts like a strange pervert around Ayase. Whether it’s because he’s actually serious or just joking to get kicked in the face, he never really lets up. Well, until he got into a relationship with Kuroneko and swiftly broke up. Ayase, at least in the anime, hasn’t really been playing a prominent role in the series and is just one that’s a somewhat interesting aside to everything that’s happening. Though, at this point, she starts being more forward about her feelings with Kyousuke. But at this point, does it even matter anymore? I mean, we’re close to the end and now they’re trying to develop the relationship between the two? I’m not really sure if that’s the right path to take at this point.

She’s falling quick.

Super happy.

Heh. No.

Kyousuke rejection

Ayase Aragaki panicking

Nonetheless, whatever developments there are between Kyousuke and Ayase, I can’t say they’re terrible. It’s just that, after such a sudden break-up between Kuroneko and Kyousuke, you’d expect more of something along those lines. Instead, we get some random Ayase insertions that, while not terrible, do not serve to progress anything all too much. I mean, if Kuroneko doesn’t stand a chance, how would Ayase? It almost seems like the writer is inserting it now because he or she figured that they might as well appease some fans by giving her some more screentime. While that’s nice for those people, I don’t think it serves to progress the relationship between the key people that really matter.

So as I continue to watch the episode, I become more and more worried about how they’re really going to close things up. The first half of the entire episode is dedicated to Ayase and, while entertaining at times, makes me feel more worried than anything else. All the meantime, I’m just wondering if the Kuroneko, Saori, Kyousuke, and Kirino group still exists because they have barely gotten together. It’s more like Saori got that ridiculously placed backstory and never came on screen again. Now I have nothing against Ayase, and it may have been weird for her to not appear on screen again, but is this really the best use of literally half the episode? Do they really have time to do this after putting the other characters to the side? Well, at least I can be a bit relieved when Kyousuke acts like his normal impulsive self and goes after Kirino.

Meruru bicycle

Kousaka Kirino happy

Kousaka Kirino eyes

That’s obviously the most important question right now.

Wait. Mikagami had that? Oh…

Wow. That must be the most embarrassing a brother can do to his sister. Riding a bicycle that has the naked Meruru stuff on it is just… extreme. No, actually I’m impressed disturbed that Kyousuke can even ride that all the way to get Kirino. I couldn’t help but smile at how Kirino just goes “Whooooaaaa” when she saw the bicycle. That perverted otaku side is so random it’s great when done correctly. It’s ridiculous how he’s helping her in this super-emotional way and there’s just like a perverted bicycle right beside him. At least he’s back from his lack-of-initiative self from last episode.

LOL. Is that even legal?

More feelings please.

Oreimo Kyousuke and Kirino

At least now, with Kirino’s confession of her feelings out of the way, she’s a bit more receptive to what Kyousuke is doing for her. At this point, I’m not sure what Kyousuke and especially Kirino really want their relationship to be. Just a close one between brother and sister or a more romantic one? The bicycle ride and the hand holding is nice and all, but what does this all mean? I mean, we’ve basically gone back to what they were like last season with Kyousuke chasing after Kirino and doing things for her. What has changed this time? I guess she’s a bit more open about her feelings, but it honestly feels like things have progressed very little this season between the two of them with the amount of time this anime has had.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. (Oreimo) Season 2 Episode 10 Review

Like last episode, I’m very conflicted about this one. I really don’t like how the first half of the episode deals mainly with Ayase. It’s not that different from the random Saori backstory in that I know it’s not going to have much significance, if any at all. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not bad with how they make do with what they have, and some people undoubtedly like Ayase falling for Kyousuke, but I’m afraid it’s just not going to develop from hereon out.

I haven’t read the Light Novel or anything, but I really don’t think it’s going to. Even if they do, it wouldn’t turn out great because they already spent some episodes dealing with Kuroneko who is far more developed than Ayase. Therefore, if they switch to Ayase, who is fairly underdeveloped, it’s going to be even more awkward how everything is going to play everything out as Kuroneko will then have her screentime used up. Now, what they could do is to combine the two scenarios and make both of them develop alongside each other with the two of them facing off against each other. However, it’s pretty unlikely at this point and even if they do do it, I’m not necessarily very confident in their abilities to make it great.

As for Kirino and Kyousuke, they’ve reset back to the way they were before. Sure, Kirino realizes her feelings for him a bit more strongly, but after 22 episodes, you’d expect a bit more from their relationship. It’s more like everything has been the same until the previous episode where Kirino confessed everything and we’ve gone back to the way things were before with a little bit of spice. However, it’s nice that Kirino is finally able to show how she really feels more than before and their relationship is beginning to move away from what they were like before. I’m really hoping A-1 Pictures puts the next few episodes to good use because that’s all they’re going to get.

They actually did it! They crammed a whole volume into a single episode! With this fast pacing they might pull off a proper ending after all! The only thing i’m disappointed of is not guest starring ClariS in this episode. The interaction between them and Kanako in the books is hilarious!

Well I agree with your opinion on Ayase. Feels a bit random and sudden but her character was kind of forgotten for a long period of time and now she’s getting some of the much needed spotlight. As for all that harassment? It was Kyousuke’s way of flirting with her. After the break-up guess he bacame a bit more mature. Though he’s still dense as a rock!

Aa far as relationships go progress can be seen despite Kirino’s extreme tsundere personality. But if i were to hook him up with anybody at this point it would be Ayase. Their personalities just fit. Even though I’m still rooting for Kuroneko!

The final Volume isn’t out yet and from the looks of it you won’t get any real spoilers seeing as the anime will likely end at the same time final the volume will most likely be translated. And as a bonus there will be an extra 10 years later episode on the BD release.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

That was a whole volume? Huh, I didn’t expect that. Anyways, they’d have to cram everything in now as there will be no third season and only the extended episodes after the end of this season. Oh and it’s a filler volume. Okay, that explains things.

Ayase is just someone who hasn’t been explored all too much so it’s fairly random how she gets screentime. Since she got some this episode, I am hoping that it actually amounts to something and it’s not just a random thing stuffed into an episode.

There’s going to be a 10 year later episode? That’s probably the thing I’ll look forward to most then as that sounds very interesting. Is that 10 year later episode counted in the final 6 or is it like another special or something? Anyways, I’m looking forward to that. Should give the anime at least a decent closure.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

It’s an extra/special so it should be no 17 or an OVA. It will come out with the BD’s so that means another couple of months of waiting after season 2 ends sigh…

Ah okay, I see. Will be a long time, but I can endure. Thanks for the info!

  • Oresanjo

Ok, now I rremember something that I’ve been forgoten long time ago when I watched Clannad anime… it was really nice anime, so I thougt until near the end of the series. but after a while, I realize something bit weird about the stories that really bother me, and ruin my anime dreams..
Yes, remember that this kind of anime is also have the purpose to promote its garoge, yes novel game. so it is designed to have many story routes for each of the heroine. so basically it has nothing like a real true ending. this is just a game of choosing a heroine to become the MC’s lover.
That is why sometimes it seems that they got the stories a bit to forced on the development, seems weird and doesn’t make any sense. just like Kyousuke’s behaviour in this episode and before.

I was fully aware of this kind of anime before but yet again, I got swayed and fell in love with it. in the end it’s just another torment for my pure anime dreams. once again i fell into their trap, once again I got betrayed. I shall remember this and retrained my soul. I shall not fall in love again…

LoL now I feel like Hikigaya Hachiman..

    nanchatte… =P

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well I can understand that they are trying to promote the game, and while that may have different endings, the Light Novel has a conclusive ending that’s made by the original author. You can think of that as the “real true ending.” I wouldn’t say that it’s completely the game’s fault for the faults of the anime. It’s more like the writer or the studio didn’t do a great job, but of course, the game plays a role whether big or small.

There will always be disappointments even if it’s an anime original or whatever. I would suggest that you don’t just “not fall in love again” and look, or wait for something again.

Heh, Hikigaya eh? That reminds me that the 10th episode review of OreGairu will be up probably in the next ~7 hours.

      • Casey Lee

That is 2 hours to go… I expect none less than 5000 words essay :p

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Lol. Well, I guess you’ll be disappointed :)

Anyways, I’m still working on it, but I have to think a lot more for that anime than I do for most so it’s taking a while. I actually wrote it yesterday, but I’m still trying to think about it a bit more. Should be done in a few hours though.

    • The Atomic Dwarf

Some very good anime came from eroges man. The likes of Clannad and Steins;Gate are proof. But even they have to suffer from what you just said. The routes!

You can see that especially in S;G with the forced episodes starring each may-have-been love interest Rintaro.. ahem Kyouma Hooin had. But this is not the case. This series is based on Light novels and it’s more about eroges than being one itself. I recommend you stick with it till the end. Trust me it’s not as bad as it looks!

  • TheOriginalArcader

Man, I just thought all the light beams were some way of blinging out the bike, not that Meruru was nekkid. :-o Then I thought that the kid in the taxi was talking about Kirino. hahaha

Well, that was interesting I guess… Seemed more like filler than anything else. So does Bridget-chan like Kyousuke as well? Crikey, it is going full-on harem and in this one instead of the MC being aloof to all the girls, he’s devoted on the incest route. [groan]

    Bring back Kuroneko dammit!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

LOOOOL. Haha. That’s interesting that you saw it that way.

Yeah, it’s more like a filler. I don’t think Bridget likes Kyousuke that way. It’s just Kyousuke only caring about his little imouto. Ehhh… I’m okay with that but I’m just not that impressed with how they did everything this episode. More Kuroneko would help because then we’d see the two rivals talk back and forth.

      • TheOriginalArcader

I guess I was trying to figure out when Ayase asked Bridget if she was afraid of sexual harassment manager and she said wasn’t and that maybe she was ‘misunderstanding something’ and then looking over at him, so I thought maybe she was crushing on him. I’d have to go back to the previous season (I think) when he met her for the first time with Kanako.

It’s getting harder to understand intent in some of these shows when the Japanese is translated to English and I feel some context is lost due to the culture differences. I just watched Oregairu 10 and figured out I lost something important in Hachiman’s comment near the end because I wasn’t sure what he meant that resulted in the Student Council President saying he was horrible. I was like huh? :-

Need more practice I guess. ;-)

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Oh I thought she just thought that he’s similar to the person she saw with Kirino because they don’t actually know he’s Kirino’s brother. Not sure though.

Hikigaya said that he doesn’t like seeing other people relax either which made the President jokingly say that he’s horrible. Just have to look at it from a different perspective sometimes and it’ll help a lot. However, there will always be some things lost in translation, but don’t worry, you should get a gist of what they’re saying if you watch enough anime and pay attention to the words. I learned a lot of random Japanese that way.

        • ITFNxSpartan .

Haha yeah i agree completely, it is hard to understand. I actually came to this site to read the review for Oregairu 10 to help me understand wtf was going on.

  • A.C.

This is going to seem really silly and trivial, apologies, BUT… seriously what the FUDGING CABBAGE CAKE HELL is it with Kyo and his bicycle’s!?!? It made sense in that one episode (season 1) when he only had the guys bicycle to get back to Kirino with the game, fine, but ‘faster than a car because of traffic’!?!? Over THAT distance!?!?! O_o

I don’t know, when an episode feels forced/artificial/unnecessary anyway having such a convoluted plot device used like that is a slap in the face. Although, it did provide some funny comedic moments (nekkid loli’s, wedding dress randomly cut to shreds, etc.), but the whole ‘rescue journey’ still felt rather stupid. Plus I couldn’t help feeling like I missed out on something much more interesting because of that and apparently I did (the ClariS dialogue). Also, as you mentioned in your review, is it really wise to waste time on secondary concerns rather than get on with the story proper at this stage?

And as for Ayase… no, just, no. Unless there’s an Ayase vs. Kuroneko stand off, which would actually be interesting, Ayase’s just too… random. I mean, first she seemed REALLY obsessed with Kirino, and was annoyingly tsun about it to Kyo, but fine. Then BAM, she’s getting jealous/delusional about Kyo!?!?! WTFUDGE!?!?! O_o

Still, not quite as messy as the last episode, but not much better either. They should have just focused on the Meru-Fest, the dialogue between Kyo and those cosplayers (with Ayase being relegated to the psychotic ‘heel’) was actually quite fun to watch, and Kanakana is always cool, especially when she’s giving Ayase a hard time. Actually serves to make Ayase more interesting. Cut all the Ayase/Kyo stuff out and replace with expanded Meru-Fest and then we’re talking. ^_^

    • The Atomic Dwarf

Mikagami is an epic troll. Expect more of his fantastic trolling in episodes to come. That bike was only the first. His next prank will be even more hilarious! As for the Ayase part? Patience, the author has a reason for this. That’s all I can say.
