“I Can’t Be My Little Sister’s Boyfriend and My Little Sister Can’t Have a Boyfriend”
“Ore ga Imōto no Kareshi na Wake ga Naishi, Ore no Imōto ni Kareshi ga Iru Wake ga Nai”

Over the past few episodes, I’ve been very hesitant to praise the anime as it did not give me the “Oreimo feel” that I had last season. It’s thankful then that this episode is steering the second season back on track.

Pretending to be a boyfriend eh? Who hasn’t seen that before? The cliffhanger from last episode, like I thought, is really just pretending. It’s no surprise then that the sis-con brother, Kyousuke, pounces at the opportunity to be Kirino’s boyfriend. Well, what ensues can be at least no less entertaining than what has been going on the last few episodes. The tsundere attitude that Kirino exhibits, and the awkward loving attitude that Kyousuke has in the first part of the episode, especially when he says “my honey” which subsequently sent shivers down my spine as it’s incredibly creepy, starts the episode off nicely.

Kirino Kousaka laughs at the face

Wow, she’s just…

Bridget Evans question Kyousuke gives head-pat

Kirino going all the way

All… the way?

It wouldn’t be a pretend date if there isn’t some misunderstanding added to the mix. It’s not like Kyousuke could have just whispered while being dragged away from Manami that he’ll explain everything later right? Yeah, and we have to get some friends to this mess as well. Wait, isn’t that blond girl, Al- I mean, Bridgett the person who cosplayed last season? And let’s face it,  being young, she’ll be asking some… fairly awkward questions to a “couple” that’s really just brother and sister. Imagine how uncomfortable it must be trying to answer questions that only lovers can answer. It’s not like Kirino and Kyousuke are that far from being such though.

Kuroneeekoooooooo!! Finally, after so long she’s at least kind of back. Ugh, it must have been really weird seeing Kirino with Kyousuke. Not to mention, she basically confessed last season with her kiss on Kyousuke’s cheek. I’ve been waiting for some heated moments between Kirino and Kuroneko over Kyousuke, and it looks like things might be going exactly like that…

He’s so devastated.

Oreimo Kyousuke surprised Kuroneko's viewpoint

Huh, a real boyfriend? Such a threat would be only seen to be fueled by the tsundere nature of Kirino and not because it’s the actual truth. However, a thought came across my mind that things would be much, much more interesting if this is the case. The reaction that Kyousuke will have and his attitude towards the supposed boyfriend alone will be interesting to witness. He’s already grabbing her arm and looking all pathetic. I wonder what drama will arise from the notion of a boyfriend?

Kirino sad face

If anything in this episode reminds me of the Oreimo from last season, it has to be the last part of the episode. Saori, Kuroneko, Kyousuke, and Kirino are working together to publish their own book. While the interactions are still not there yet, just seeing them together is already a plus. At least now I know that the anime will be focusing on where it needs to be focusing it’s time.

Is that the boyfriend? Honestly, I’m not sure what I think of him right now, but Kirino’s sad looks towards Kyousuke being with Kuroneko makes me think otherwise. Who knows, it may be out of angst that Kirino got the boyfriend as Kyousuke said he will not pretend to play boyfriend with her again. Still, I really hope that the direction that the anime is trying to take really turns out to be something as the idea of a boyfriend and a conflicted Kyousuke would be quite interesting. It would also make the ending even more uncertain. And remember, Kyousuke is the only boy that really knows of Kirino’s otaku side, and that’s what made their relationship so close in the first place. If the “boyfriend” finds out as well, Kyousuke will no longer know a side of Kirino that no other guy knows. Let the drama begin.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. (Oreimo) Season 2 Episode 5 Review

Maybe it’s the almost painfully mediocre episodes for the last few weeks, but I like this episode quite a bit. We finally get more group action, and the characters are just like I remember with some character progression variations. Even the story this time, with the boyfriend and the relationship between Kuroneko and Kyousuke seems to be even more interesting than the conflicts we had last season. Also, the humor, the character interactions, and the awkward moments are beginning to come back. Also, with the Light Novel ending with the anime, and the plot moving in this direction, maybe Oreimo will venture a path we did not expect?
