“My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute!”
“Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai!”
(俺の妹がこんなに可愛いわけがない!)

Last episode I, and many others, have said that this will be the turning point of the anime. The episode title is already a big indicator, and with Kuroneko gone, there’s going to be inevitably some drama. The thing is, however, do the drama hit the places it needed to hit, and do the characters along with the story progress in a reasonable and developmental manner?

Akagi sena says the words

Oh.

Well…

Kyousuke slaps kirino for once

It’s interesting seeing a different perspective.

LIFE ADVICE TIME.

So after the dreadful last episode for some people, it turns out that Kuroneko transfers schools. However, the underlying reason is more than just that. And who could really blame Kyousuke for being nothing but confused throughout the beginning? Having never been in a romantic relationship with anyone else and then suddenly being cut off is hard for many people to bear. When he did smack Kirino and ask her for advice, I can’t help but put a smile on my face for it’s finally time that Kirino did something in return for his brother’s kindness.

Awww.

Dependable for once?

I’m sure that the KirinoxKyousuke fans are really happy while watching this scene. I have to admit that it’s sweet seeing Kirino finally get out of her tsun shell and finally show some of her dere side to Kyousuke. This highlights the main aspect of this episode fairly well, and that would be Kirino’s growth as a character from just an angry little sister to someone who is definitely less annoying and more true to herself. It’s not a complete 180 either because Kirino has been just suppressing her other side and we’ve seen that plenty of times before. It’s nice to finally see them have an actual relationship as brother and sister for once though.

Yeah… that was…

Kuroneko gokou ruri surprised

Yeah, sure.

So in the end, it’s more about Kuroneko trying to make Kirino truly accept their relationship rather than her sacrificing herself so that they can be together. It’s much better this way and all seems to be going well in terms of Kuroneko and Kirino shaping their own characters by having their own conversation. We’ve been through enough of the same tsundere Kirino to not get any answers as how she truly feels, and now she answers it. But the thing is, with all the drama that’s hitting the viewers, is it done well?

Nice try, Kirino.

What a troll move.

I’m personally a sucker for drama, and I liked watching Sakurasou. I understand that many people find the drama portrayed here as “melodramatic” that gives them headaches or whatever. I can understand that to a certain degree with the yelling, outbursts of emotion, and so on. However, while I can’t say that it’s very well done, it’s definitely not terrible. I mean, how do those people even expect Kirino to act in the first place? Kirino’s conflict with not wanting her brother to have a girlfriend and being the most important but also having to take his emotions into account is a reasonable one. It’s not like she’s crying a river of tears while saying how she feels. It’s definitely acceptable.

Nonetheless, it’s unavoidable to have some cliche lines here and there, but for the most part, it’s fairly genuine and I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it’s melodramatic. With that said, it really doesn’t make me go “wow” or think that it’s that great. It’s decent, but it definitely doesn’t leave me in awe of the interaction or the dialogue. It does what it needs to do, that is, for Kyousuke to understand Kirino, but it doesn’t exceed expectations by any means.

REALLY? You’re not even trying to think about it.

I have to say that I’m fairly disappointed with Kyousuke’s response of saying that he won’t get a girlfriend because Kirino doesn’t want him to get one. I can’t really argue with the fact that he’s been weak this episode. He’s not like his usual self, and while you could say that he’s not used to what’s happening, he still comes off as a wimp of a character this episode. Not thinking for himself and contrasting his previous assertive self definitely makes me go “meh.” As for Kuroneko, it’s clear that she’s just avoiding it to not want to hear the truth. At this point, I’m not even sure how things are going to wrap up as it looks like everything has reset.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. (Oreimo) Season 2 Episode 9 Review

Sorry for those who don’t like the more critical approach, but with all the complaints surrounding this episode, I felt that I needed to take a more serious approach this episode in the impressions. Overall, this episode is decent. It develops Kirino’s character, who is really supposed to have developed some time ago, quite nicely. The drama is……. okay. I’m actually really split on how I feel about how it’s done. Well, the very fact I’m split on it really indicates to me that it’s probably not too far from average either way. I wanted Oreimo to do more with this episode and had high expectations. It turns out that it’s decent, and I’m disappointed with how Kyousuke reacts this episode. Still, maybe when I watch it again, I will appreciate or dislike it more? But what do you think? Do you think the drama or the characterization is well done or do you think this episode is more on the disappointing side?

Oh man. I can kind of feel your pain. If I were to ship anyone I would ship those two. Besides, it’s not…. completely destroyed. Just… hit an iceberg that’s all.

      • Drig

The last time I saw a ship hit an iceberg, the only romantic couple I was invested in got destroyed pretty badly.

Thanks for making me feel more depressed.

  • Rithux

I kind of pick KirinoxKyosuke though. @@ It would be more fun if they actually at the end that they were not real bro-sis. Lol.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Nononoononono that would be a terrible twist for them to not actually be brothers and sisters. That would just be really lame in my opinion. I don’t mind them being together by the end, but that’s just… very contrived and unnecessary.

      • Rithux

Hahaha. I guess so. Just being too over the top with my imagination. Seeing as the title is as goes. I think the drama will subside, for now though. Overall this episode is good. No cliffhangers that would make me want to buy a time machine to instantly watch the next episode unlike the previous.

While I think the drama will subside a bit, it’ll kick up pretty soon. I’m good waiting for a week haha. Not in the position to take a few hours to make another post. :)

I just love how kuroneko says “…kashira?” in every end of her lines (=w=)
I kind of dissapointed with this episode but again its not a bad episode (^_^). just like you said, I can see that kyosuke is a total wimp here cuz at the first he said that he still love kuroneko until now, but at the end he just accept that kirino dont want him to have a girlfriend. Just how much yo loved kuroneko anyway?? but I kind of have expectation when kyuosuke said “at least, until you have a boyfriend” to kirino… hope theres still a chance for kuroneko x kyosuke coupled (=w=)

and BANZAAII !! for kuroneko for saying that shes not actually running away, this is just a strategic retreat LoL. and also about that curse hasn’t worn off. knowing that kuroneko hasn’t giving up on kyosuke just yet and she is trully in love with kyosuke makes me a bit relieve. means I get to see kuroneko’s moe moe expression again (^0^)

Kuroneko kakoiiii !! suki desuu! (^0^)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Kyousuke better start being more assertive next episode or I’m going to be even more disappointed with his softness. It’ll be interesting to see Kuroneko and his interactions from now on. More moe incoming I’m sure.

      • Tama

I’m just affraid that kuroneko’s part might be lessened in the next stories, becuz of her transfering to other school. and that means we wont be seeing anyone in the game research club again,
eventhough she moved not too far away from her old home, I think transfering school is not necessary actually… (-_-)

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I am afraid of everyone not getting together as often, but we’ll have to wait to see how it all pans out. Transferring schools just gave way to the drama and character development we had this episode. I’m not sure if it was completely necessary, and it is lame for her to be gone from the club though.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

Love the character development in this episode, but I really hate the return to the status quo. It’s too damn stereotypical. I’ve seen this in enough anime already! This episode feels like it’s been written by angry fans who want the story to continue, not the author himself.

As far as behaviour goes Kyousuke did behave strangely in this one. Perhaps it’s the shock of the sudden break-up or his sisters’ sudden confession of her true feelings. Either way this isnt like the Kyousuke we all know. His lines and personality seem forced in a way and he resembles your bland, one dimentional random MC from the typical Harem Anime.

Kuroneko was awesome as always! I feel sorry for her and what she had to sacrifce and endure until now and in the end she couldn’t stand the pressure anymore and fainted d’awwww.

And Kirino. Well She finally becomes more honest with herself. Feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s the only reason why the whole episode wasnt that horrible.

I could go at this for hours and not stop. Pretty angry with what the author did in this episode. It feels like he gave in to death threats from Kirino fans or something and had to suddenly change the pacing/story to calm them down. Guess this is another form of Fanservice :(. The story still has potential but without spoiling anything from the books let’s just say that it wont be at the same level as it was until now.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I agree with fact that Kyousuke behaved strangely. He’s not even like his usual self and he’s just, like you said, a typical MC from a harem anime. One could rationalize it and say that he’s not used to the circumstances, but I’d say that he’s just… not how he should be. He stayed silent the whole time basically and took everything like a wuss.

Finally, we get some actual Kirino development. It should have been done a lot sooner in my opinion as we’re rounding up to the climax.

Ah, that’s too bad about the Light Novels. I enjoyed the last season quite a bit and this one has been not what I’ve been expecting at first, then it became what I thought it should be like, and now I’m really uncertain how I feel which isn’t a great sign. I’m not sure if the author ran out of ideas or something, but I do hope everything wraps up nicely. That’s all I’m really hoping for now.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

Me too. I’m really hoping for a third season or at least an extended half-season like the first one was with the Kuroneko arc.

This is always the problem with sequels. They will be compared to the first season and the expectations are high. That’s why so many of them crash and burn.

However the story here is pretty solid and if they fast-forward some parts of it like the title of the new episode suggests than we can still get so see some exciting and awesome stuff at the end.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yep, there’s going to be 3 streamed “special” episodes just like the last season. With the season nearing its end, they can’t possibly have enough time to end everything like they want it. I’m glad that they’re using this method again as more time is almost always good for a 1-cour anime.

  • A.C.

This was a weird one, damn weird. I felt really conflicted watching it, and frankly mildly disappointed. On the one hand, I’m relieved that the chances of Kuroneko getting Kyo aren’t COMPLETELY Dan Hibiki (without hope) just yet, though they’re looking pretty shaky right now.

And her continued obsession with the ‘ideal end’ is a bit worrying to say the least, but I still admire her passion, even if her break-up ‘technique’ leaves A LOT to be desired. (Seriously kid, that’s some emotional torture you’re rockin’ right there… >_>)

However, Kirino and Kyo were by parts surprising and at the same time, as the Atomic Dwarf said, stereotypical. Also, it felt all too abrupt and artificial. Had this development happened gradually and intelligently over say three (or even two) episodes, it may not have been so bad. But to have the characters do an about-turn in this way (Kirino suddenly becomes kind of cool and Kyo turns into a breakdancing jellyfish of inconsistency…) is just awkward, especially Kyo contradicting himself like that. I get the attempt at role-reversal, I do, but this is a really clunky example.

Overall I was expecting it to be more genuinely dramatic and less cheesy, and while a tortured Kyo could make for an interesting episode if he at least maintained SOME of his usual resolve, this version of Kyo is pretty bland and uninteresting. Still, at least Kuroneko’s ‘Happy End’ actually has her in the picture now (literally). But still, her desperate attempts at altruism still don’t bode well for her own wellbeing, or that of Kyo’s for that matter.

“IT’S ALL FOR KIRINO!!!” That’s pretty much the message we’re getting from both Kuroneko and Kyo, and this episode in a way is almost like an attempt at proving Kirino might, maybe, be worth the effort. But still, to paraphrase your review, it felt more like a ‘reset’ than an actual character evolution. It had it’s moments, but it could have been a LOT better.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I pretty much agree with you on all fronts. The sudden outburst feels more dramatically provoking rather than giving growth to characters naturally. It almost feels like Kirino did a complete 180 this episode. Sure we can say that she has held her feelings in and just didn’t show it now, but it’s still not a great way to execute the character growth. I guess I’m just happy that she has finally broken out of the shell more than I’m dissatisfied at the sudden turn of events.

Heck, Kuroneko is pretty much forcing Kirino to tell the truth about everything rather than her feelings playing out naturally due to this event. I just feel that Kirino changing gradually because of this incident and noticing her feelings for her brother would have been better. If I had a choice, I would have done that kind of development a long time ago as we’re nearing the end.

I just hope that with the “reset” we get more of the real feelings from Kirino that may lead to an interesting and fulfilling conclusion. If that’s the case, I wouldn’t mind this episode all too much if it’s a means to an end, but that doesn’t make this episode that good regardless.

  • P.M.

I was very disappointed. Why did thy change(censored) the kiss scene, when Kyousuke wakes kirno up… <_<

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Wait there’s a kiss scene there? On the cheek I suppose when he’s crying or something. That’s weird. They should have added that if it’s in the Light Novel.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

Damn! Hoped nobody would say/realise that! Well technically she was still asleep and thought Kyousuke was Miyabi-chan. As for the kiss it’s questionable. He even ponders if the lips touched or not…. They couldn’t add such a vague thing in the anime.

        • P.M.

Hmm, I think you are right, and well the “slap” makes more sence, because Kirino did the same to Kyousuke, but still, I was hoping to see that scene in the anime ^^
