World Conquest Zvezda Plot Episode 1 Review
“Conquer all humans.”

Exactly what is world conquest? Some would imagine that the greatest leaders of the world collaborate to unite the world as one. Some would think that there is a force in the shadows governing the world *COUGH*MAGIUS*COUGH*. Some would think that it is an impossible task, but few would have imagined a loli hellbent on shining the light of Zvezda upon the Earth. Few would have imagined that she would be capable of doing such a thing… Then again, when you have a giant UMA capable of destroying a nation’s military with henchmen that can slice tanks in half and the ability to stop tank shells with one finger… It suddenly is not as surprising. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Hoshimiya Kate’s quest to conquer the world.

Okay, some people had problems with this part. I’m pretty sure Lincoln didn’t say anything about world conquest, but he did say “government of the people, by the people, for the people” in his Gettysburg Address. Kate just said “Conquest of the conquest, by conquest, for conquest.” Yeah, a lot of conquest. You can still see the similarity between the two nonetheless.

CAN’T ARGUE WITH THAT.

Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda Episode 1 Review

After seeing many first episodes of this new season, few have made me interested in seeing where those shows will go and even fewer bring enough to the table for the first episode for me to actually be excited. Arguably this is understandable as there is the strict limitation of time that restricts these shows from fully blossoming to what they could be. Nevertheless, when there is a show that is capable of overcoming this barrier of entry and makes itself captivating from the start, it is definitely worth a mention. No one really knows what to expect from a show on the first episode, unless of course, there is a source material that one can read to know of what happens in the future, but for original shows like this, there is no such source material. As such, the aim of not only the first episode, but also the first few episodes should be first and foremost to be entertaining enough to hook the audience. Now, this is incredibly obvious, but maybe what’s not so obvious is exactly why this is the case. Although this will differ from person to person, I will attempt to explain some aspects that the writer uses in the first episode of Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda that manages to captivate me.

The first strategy the writer uses is to skip to the end of the story where the main goal of the protagonists are achieved. Unlike blatant spoilers written by insensitive people who wish to ruin another’s experience of important events, this is very much deliberate on the author’s part. By showing the end of the journey, the audience becomes engaged in the idea of how it all unravels. The more absurd and unexpected the end is, the more effective this technique will be for it will trigger our natural tendency to be curious even more. In this case, it is the success of world conquest, and quite frankly, it’s quite up there in terms of absurdity. This may even be used as a ruse to keep the audience distracted on this apparent “ending” while progressing the story in such a way so that it goes beyond that point surprising the viewers even further. It may even be deceptive in that it may not be world conquest in the way that the audience believes it to be from what they have seen of the show so far. As a person who likes to wonder about these things, you can see why I become quite interested in how the story will progress just from this alone.

I think above all else, this anime captivates me because it is so bizarre. I don’t just mean the loli that is trying to take over the world, but it’s the fact that it’s seriously trying to have a loli take over the world. When I originally read the premise with these kinds of character designs, I thought that this would be mostly comedy and the topic of world domination would be an afterthought. I have no doubt that comedy will still be central to this, but within the first minute, my expectations were smashed, and the rest of the episode made it clear that they really are capable of world conquest. This in turn reminds me of Hataraku Maou-sama! which has a similarly serious tone mixed with humor that made the show one of the most entertaining shows of that year. It didn’t throw its more serious premise aside and instead utilized that to its advantage. It seems to me that Sekai Seifuku is doing something similar albeit on another level where… they’re actually going to go for world conquest! Seeing how Hoshimiya Kate, a loli that is already fairly likable, will use her powers of… CONQUEST to take over the world with a fascinating group of similar-minded villains is looking to be an entertaining ride. If they really do end up taking over the world or something on that scale really does happen by the end, then this will be a show to watch out for. I don’t really mind whether they dominate the world through the use of UMA or more meticulous means; I just hope the story sticks to the idea of world conquest because that isn’t something you see everyday.

I actually found the first episode to be quite amusing XD Hope this turns out to be a great series.

I’m hoping too. I really am.

  • Dycize

    Haha, didn’t expect that post.

When I 1st saw the show, I also thought that it would probably mostly be comedy… And it is! Just kind of a bit more different. Stil waiting on episode 2 to make a proper judgement on that, since this is an introductory episode, but at least, it should be entertaining.

The whole plot premise is silly : we got an (apparently) small organisation with funny (yet powerful) looking members who, according to the narration, actually managed to take over the world. How can we not want to see that?

Speaking of the characters, we don’t see much of them yet, but if anything, I like the design direction. It’s so blatantly evil. Black all over, masks, gaz masks, femaly nudity. And the giant monster is made of the cutest things. There’s just something about likeable world conquerors…

    …KIRABOSHI!
(dang it, now I’m reminded of the movie and how it disappointed me)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

A LOLI TAKING OVER THE WORLD. I CAN ROLL WITH THAT. It’s really the intro part that got me though or else I wouldn’t be anticipating this as much because she, apparently, actually succeeds.

KIRABOSHI! Didn’t watch the movie yet, but I heard it was pretty bad.

      • Dycize

The problem with the movie is that we got teased what was, essentially, a sequel movie. Except that this sequel part lasted a whole 5 minutes long at the beginning. Everything else? Recap movie. So it’s pretty pointless if you already watched the serie =x

I …am still on the fence. But your review is really pushing me into the liking side simply because now that I look back on the episode (via this review) you are right: the show’s writers got my curiousity. Also Kate is extremely likeable and her banter with the MC was pretty good. Also I’m curious about the MC’s home situation.
I’ve decided I will keep watching as long as you keep blogging about it because it seems like one of those shows where I’m going to need outside confirmation for what I just watched. And boy do you have a knack for pointing out things that may be missed (your Kill la Kill stuff was pretty good).
Funny because I never planned on watching this since I’m not really a fan of lolis and also because it seemed to similar to Gatchaman Crowds and Kyousogiga (though I hear only good things about Kyousogiga).

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m not really a fan of lolis either, but for some reason Hoshimiya Kate intrigues me. HER QUEST FOR WORLD DOMINATION HAS GREATLY PIQUED MY INTEREST. I kind of doubt that I will review that many episodes of this anime because it’s not really profound or anything. Who knows though? Maybe there’ll be more things to criticize. I’ll definitely watch this show until the end though because I really want to see how she succeeds.

Hope you continue to blog for this magnificent anime. It’s easily one of my favourite ones this season so far. It seems to have a perfect balance between absurdity and seriousness that just make it something special in my eyes.

Another hugely surprising thing is the sheer lack of fan service this episode. You would think with those costumes it would be chock full of it, yet there was pretty much none whatsoever.

Personally I see Kate as the daughter Fate/Zero’s Alexander wished he had :p.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha, the outfits are provocative enough I suppose, but you’re right. The show doesn’t go out of its way for fanservice. I didn’t really notice that until now. It’s a good sign. I probably will not have too much to talk about for the remainder of the series though, but it may have something worthy of note again. We’ll have to wait and see.

      OHH YEAAAAH. ISKANDARRRRRRR!!

Other anime I hope you review:
    Pupipo!
    Wizard Barristers.
    Tonari no Seki-kun
    Noragami
    Sakura Trick

I most likely won’t review shorts. Maybe when they’re over.

I’m keeping an eye out for Wizard Barristers, Noragami and Sakura Trick though. They’re three of the better series of this season after all

      • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Pupipo is good. Like, why isn’t this full episodes, good.

  • Irenesharda

    World Conquest huh?

Well, this series is one that is usually against my better judgement. I’ve never liked lolis has main characters and most of the time they usually come off as annoying brats rather than cute children. The last loli I really liked was Yugiri from The UNLIMITED-Hyoubu Kyousuke of last winter. She actually acted as a really little girl would, and I adored her every second of the way. :D

Anyway, back on track, as for young Kate here, well, unfortunately she’s in that category of tsundere lolis that I hate, but hopefully she might get better with time. This whole show seems muddled and it’s really confusing in terms of the way all the characters were suddenly presented, in Kate herself and why she seems to have two personas, as to this new future Japan that seems to have some sort of martial law going on. I really wish they had explained this world that Kate is trying to conquer a bit better, and also shown a little more clearly exactly what Zvezda is.

Despite her speech, I really don’t know why Kate is trying to take over the world or what her aim is? And where did these powers come from? And what’s with the weird antennae on her head? Is she an alien? If so, that’s a bit more understandable. I also hope they go into all these other characters and explain why they’re working with her as well, or did they all just wander in like Asuta?

However despite all this confusion, that beginning scene that flashes forward to the future is what really pulled me in. I like how the narrator was speaking about world conquest and the true consequences of such. Yet, despite what he said, it was the world around him that did more talking then he ever could. We can gather that though Kate takes over the world it’s probably not going to end well for her. And in the end, the world lies in complete runes, her statue (she’s definitely older in that pose) is tarnished, weathered, and alone among the rubble.

That beginning if anything is what is getting me to continue this series, if just to see how it ends up that way.

I agree.. This is one of the many first episode of this season that actually impressed me (it means there is more, though).. It’s not rush and the plot seem really interesting, the mix between seriousness and comedy is really good, and it seem absurd from the synopsis and character design but there is actually depth that actually made me ponder.. Yeah, will keep watching it to see how it goes..

I have been watching all of first episode of this season’s shows and I’m actually surprised at several shows that actually managed to impressed me like D-Frag, Sekai Seifuku, Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, Nobunagun, Nourin and Hamatora (excluding WCW, Nisekoi and SYD for certain reason).. Actually, winter is not bad as I thought it would..
