Okay, people were whining about things here and there last episode, but this time, I don’t think anyone has anything to complain about. Well, other than the missing frames, but overall, this episode reminds people the reason why Shingeki no Kyojin is so hyped to begin with. Even though I didn’t really like this in the manga, seeing it in animated form is something else.

Shingeki no Kyojin Episode 13 Impressions

For some reason I found this part kind of funny.

For some reason I found this part kind of funny.

Marcooooooo

Jean Kirstein stuck

LOL. What are you even doing, Connie?

Annie Leonhart

Hey, the still frames are good for me :)

Can’t go without some 3D Manuever Gear action.

Okay, first off that’s a very long intro. We have close to five minutes of etcetera material that doesn’t contribute to the anime at all. Well, the opening is still nice to listen to, but that’s a lot of time shaved off. And for what? Action and tension that’s what. That’s not before we run into some problems with some missing frames. When Jean is looking at the Titan that’s supposedly about to eat him, Annie… jumps in and saves him I suppose? It’s not really a huge problem, but it does disrupt the flow of the episode quite a bit. Oh well, the 3D Maneuver Gear action pretty much redeems the missing frames, and it’ll be fixed in the BD anyways so-

OOOOOO DAMN.

YEAAAAAH THAT TAUNT.

LOL that Titan in the back.

Uhhmm..

NOOOOOOOOO.. HE’S PRETTY AWESOME!!!

HELL YEEAAAAAAHHHHH! IT’S ROCK CARRYING TIME! For their freedom these soldiers will put their lives on the line. They’ll die one after the other just for that small wish to be freed from the Titans that prey upon them over and over. They’ll-

HELL. YEAH.

Well done. Well done.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! If that soundtrack along with everything that’s going on doesn’t get you pumped up, I don’t know what will. Man, Hiroyoyuki is really trying to make his mark as someone who excels with vocal soundtracks and he’s doing a phenomenal job. Very fitting placement with a very fitting soundtrack truly makes me go “Wow. Holy shit.” This is where the anime departs from the manga greatly in terms of portrayal. While the manga isn’t that well drawn, it’s certainly not terrible. Still, anime in general has so many things going for it as well such as voice acting, soundtrack, and hey, actual animations (for those who complain about still frames). It just adds that much more testosterone excitement to the scene.

Shingeki no Kyojin

NINJA BATMAN LEVI.

Those skills.

The frames here…

LEVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!! Alright, I don’t know what’s going on, but the frames are totally messed up for mine. It’s like it’s going at 4 frames per second when Levi stands on top of the dead titan. Even after that, the frame rate is still really low. Not sure if it’s just mine, but it’ll be fixed in the BD if it’s not. Maybe they were trying to emphasize his entrance? Even then, the low frame rate distracts me more than anything else. Nonetheless, it’s a fabulous entrance as Levi will be much more important as Shingeki no Kyojin progresses. For now, celebrate the victory of mankind!… Eh, you know how it goes. Whenever there’s something gained, the writer likes to just make things miserable all over again.

Ooo

Jean Kirstein shocked

Marco Bott eaten in half

Oh. Fuck. Shit. They show it.

Marco Bott dead

R.I.P.

Titan throw up

Pretty disturbing, but the manga version may be a bit more so.

Sasha blouse horrified

104th Training Corps.
Leader of Squad 19, Marco Bott.
May you rest in peace.

I can understand Jean’s despair right here. At first, I didn’t even like the guy for his attitude, but as time went on, he’s just like everyone else and he’s suffering all the same. Even if victory is obtained, plenty of people lost their lives in disturbing ways. The worse thing is that some of them are unrecognizable. Maybe their faces got torn off, maybe everyone who knows them suffered the same fate, and maybe some are trying to forget them for only nightmares will remain. That’s the price of freedom.

Chief Erwin shingeki-13-44-levi

C-C-CAAAAIIIIINNNN!!!!

Attack on Titan Eren Eren Jaeger ready to kill

Captain Levi attack on titan

Oh Levi has his eyes on you now/you’re his bitch now.

CAAAINN- Sorry, too much Valvrave still on my mind. Uhhhmm.. I mean, Chief Erwin. Yes, him and Levi are the top two in the Recon Corps. Eren’s got a desire to kill the Titans and Levi seems to really like that. I’m not surprised about his attitude towards him after all that’s happened though. Trusting him is far too early. Eren has always wanted to get into the Scout Corps… Well now, he’s in, but he’s going to be in control by Levi who is more serious than you can imagine. However, the higher ups probably won’t be happy with a child capable of causing havoc with his uncontrollable Titan powers going free even if it’s Levi. But we don’t really know how this will affect Eren’s relationships with everyone and most importantly, what will happen to society’s outlook on him. This is just the first of many challenges awaiting Eren and his crew. Retaking Wall Maria may be the final goal, but man. There are going to be some real hardships ahead.

Shingeki no Kyojin Episode 13 Review

There are a lot of animation mistakes in this episode. I totally forgot about the purple blocks when Eren stomps his feet on the ground in Titan form amongst a lot of others. Otherwise, this is a pretty good episode with some much needed action and story progression. They’ve covered what they should cover in an episode instead of dragging a few chapters out, and this is the result. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the fervor of the situation and just be amazed at some scenes. Even the death and dread is still there along with the victories and everything remains incredibly tense. I just like how it sticks to the dark side and doesn’t really stray from that path. But I guess the major thing is that this episode really gets me excited for what’s to come while also feeling the darker side to everything that’s happened. Oh, and the soundtrack. The soundtrack… Now that’s some great stuff.

Note: I will not be reviewing the next episode because it is a recap. It will be episode 13.5 so the one after the recap will still be episode 14. (Thank God because some new anime are starting on that day)

The new badass recon corps compensates a lot for Eren’s whiny atitude and thank the great Titan God that it seems humanity doesn’t necessarily rely on just a whiny teenager for it’s survival. *ahem* screw you Shinji! *ahem*

The fighting scenes were pretty damn good and this show takes an awesome approach when it comes to killing off characters, though I’m still hoping we get too see the death of a main char sometime soon in pure GRRM fashion.

But as you mentioned the animation quality dropped even further. Though it compensates a lot for it in terms of storyline so it’s ok. The fact that Eren got arrested and the fact that not just Armin suspects the true nature of the Collosal and Armoured Titan was really refresing to see and it proves that humanity didn’t just survive because of a fluke. The scene brings up a huge amount of questions and conspiracy theories in mind.

Where are those 2 titans hiding now? Who else knows about their existence? How are they planning to catch the ones in hiding? Do titans have any sort of heiarchy? They seem to have strategies and plans (i’m not talking about the mindless drones but the special ones). If so what if the human royalty knows or has a sort of agreement with them? Did they attack after so long because of something the humans did or forgot to do? And the list goes on.

All in all it was the episode I’ve been waiting for 3 weeks now! No more beating aurd the bush and naive speeches. The sceens of the aftermath where they count the casualties shows the true face of war, something which very few anime and almost any kind of entertainment nowadays seem to forget.

I think what compensates for the lack of animation in some scenes are the awesomely animated scenes. I’d rather have that than two mediocre scenes to be honest. But of course, the storyline itself is fairly solid as well.

P.S. Have you tried DotA? It’s a nice alternative if you are looking for something similar but different at the same time. More difficult to start off though and mechanics are more complex.

      • The Atomic Dwarf

Let’s just hope the show won’t turn into one part still scenes one part very complex animations during battle sequences. They need to use some moderation or else people will just skip through the nasty bits and perhaps lose vital plot-related information.

DotA was the first MOBA I tried but I didnt like it that much. It’s more difficult and complex I agree and I like that, but it seems a bit… slow at times. Either way waiting for those new ones to appear. IC with DC universe heroes now that’s interesting!

  • Irenesharda

Well, we finally, finally, FINALLY finish the Battle of Trost.

Everyone works together to protect Eren as he, now awakened, moves the boulder through the city to block the wall. It is a powerful and epic scene as everyone does their best, some living to continue the fight and some dying horribly for the cause.

Eren’s monologue as he goes to fulfill the plan is very powerful and carries great impact even as we see the death surrounding him. Mikasa and Armin work with him to clear the way and in the end, the humans succeed and win for the first time against the Titans.

However, once again it’s a Pyrrhic victory as they have lost over 200 people and almost 900 have been wounded. We find that another named character has bitten the dust in the form of poor Marco. The guy had a horrible death and it was off screen at that! To see all of these trainees go through this death and devastation, and to see the looks on their faces, you can see they’ve encountered horrors they will never forget.

We also finally have the arrival of the Recon Corps who’s late to the party. After Eren is fished from out of his Titan body, he’s imprisoned in an underground dungeon (ungrateful ingrates!) and he has a meeting with the Recon Corps Erwin and Levi. They basically want what he wants, which is to travel out and retake Wall Maria and then further get to his family’s home basement, using Eren’s Titan powers. Levi doesn’t like Eren much but he seems to admire the look in his eye as the two have a very similar goal. He decides to take responsibility for him and add Eren to the Recon Corps.

I know that many manga fans seem to love Levi, and I can admit that he is a good fighter and has some honorable qualities about him. However, after only meeting him twice I haven’t really made much connection with him. In fact his abrasive, superior attitude annoys me a little. Especially since the way he talks to our main three heroes who we’ve grown to know and love, is derisive at best. I just keep looking at him and say to myself, “I don’t know you, so you don’t get to talk that way to them.” Yet, I hope as I’m able to get to know him better, that I find more to like about him.

Well, I will give this episode a 8/10. The beginning was awesome and powerful, but the second half was laying the misery on a little too thick. Next time is a recap episode, but thankfully they won’t count it in the episode count. I might glance through it, but I generally loath recap episodes.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It did take a long time to get this small segment out of the way though. That’s true, but I have to say that the first half of the episode makes up for that well.

You’ll see why people like Levi in the upcoming episodes. He’s harsh, serious, and all that, but as you saw with the death of his comrades, he cares greatly for all of them. I can see why you would not like him now. I got the same impression at first when I read the manga.

Haha, I hate recap episodes as well. I’ll just pretend it never existed or maybe I’ll watch it if people say it’s good.

  • xxbabaxx

Those REALLY low frame rate moments, interesting, especially when the titans were walking on the streets, looked like they had some swag …….. hope it gets fix on bd, or was it on purpose, to give tension or something………..

    • The Atomic Dwarf

By fixed you mean adding golden chains, some sunglasses and maybe a nose pierce right?
With that walk and attire they’d be true gangsta titans!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m pretty sure those low frame moments will be fixed on the BD. They were trying to make Levi’s appearance really awe inspiring, but the broken frames don’t fit at all. Oh well, we’ll see I guess.

I just love how the “make you feel?” chart has all 100% excited hahaha.
I liked the episode though I believe they took too many episodes on The Battle of Trost, even though maybe they were needed, I enjoyed most of the episode, I believe this is it for the ending of the first season, I know there is another episode but I doubt that in just half season they can take Jaegar’s region back, lol I really don’t know I haven’t read the light novels even though all my friends are like: “Baka! Baka!” and they just baka slap me because I don’t read it hahaha but yeah.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

12 votes as well. It’s not really comparable to the Valvrave posts which are in the 40s, but yep, people should be excited for what’s to come. It’ll slow down a bit for a while and then accelerate until the finish. People will like the next arc I’m sure if WIT Studio managed to do this episode well.

  • Sarigar

Levi seems like the most evil good guy in any anime I can recall. The combination of Hitler hair and Yazan Gable eyes makes him look like a 1920’s German serial killer. In fact, I’m guessing that Levi IS a serial killer, who joined the Recon Corps to indulge his need for murder. But, the man can lay waste to titans without peer, so more power to him. Although a duel between Levi and Mikasa would be interesting…

Was a great episode overall, despite some shoddy animation.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

A duel between Mikasa and Levi would certainly be interesting, but then it’d have to be about kill count and not against each other since they’re specialized in killing Titans. I agree that he’s quite similar to other characters like this, but the methods he uses later on is quite… different and interesting.

  • Flaiboy

How did Chief Erwin know the significance of Eren’s key?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Eren told Pixis in an earlier episode about the basement and I’m sure Erwin inquired what the heck was going on so that’s how he knew.

  • Shingeki_No_Why

so yeah that was Marco, but what happened to his freckles (sorry that’s probably a stupid question, but I jsut really cant grasp the fact that they didn’t show how he died)
