(まだ目を見れない ―反撃前夜①―)

Eren’s abilities as a Titan is undeniably a huge asset to mankind’s survival if he can harness his powers. However, as people will remain people no matter in whatever situation they are put in, political and social pressure is put forth with this fact. When danger seems far away, it’s far easier to benefit oneself in the foreseeable future.

That must feel like shit. You’re sacrificing everything for giving a fighting chance to humanity and some treat you like what you’re trying to destroy.

Some people say Free! is gay, but no one complains about this?!

Inside Wall Sina, the people are less concerned about the impending danger of the Titans and more so about what the people in Wall Rose will do. Indeed, they’d rather let Eren die than to have their positions threatened. To the people inside of Wall Rose, the recapturing of Trost signaled a brand new symbol of hope for them. Just like wildfire, information, rumors, and maybe even some tall tales are spread throughout. The Military Police is responsible for keeping order in the inner lands. For them, it’s natural to exterminate Eren because of his very nature. For the Recon Corps, he’s absolutely invaluable. They may be able to go farther than they ever had before in their operations. But seriously, the people in the Recon Corps are weirdos. Awesome weirdos at that.

Recon Corps

Court! How nice. So let’s talk about the Military Police’s proposition first. They’re saying that they’ll examine Eren, eliminate him afterwards to prevent any rebellions, and in the process gain some valuable information about him. To be frank, if you were to look at it from their perspective, it’s not the most terrible proposition. It’s actually quite reasonable. It is a fact that Eren did attack his allies when in Titan form, and with the rest of the population uneasy about another breach, there is still a great threat of a rebellion which can be frightening in its own right. However, the problem with that is the wild card will be gone from humanity. There is no one else like Eren that anyone knows of right now and if they lose him, what will happen when the Colossal Titan or the Armored Titan shows up again? How can they even hope to defend it much less seal the gates again?

Yeah, fucking fatass.

LOL. Real conflict.

If anyone else finds the Church of the Walls’ priest irritation, I would not blame you. This person is the epitome of the crazy follower of a religion hellbent on convincing everyone else of his beliefs and discarding all else. Still, the Walls are quite incomprehensible to us right now. How did humanity create such gigantic walls so high up? Why does humanity not understand them now? Did something get lost in the process of building it? While there’s no need to be as crazy as this priest, the fact is that understanding the Walls may be important as well.

I’m sorry, but that’s just ridiculous. “Emotionally-biased?” BRO. ARE YOU SAYING THAT HE DIDN’T BLOCK THE CANNON FIRE? As for what he’s saying the rest of the time about them murdering the three robbers, I’m just going to go ahead and state that they didn’t do anything that has “a lack of humanity” after that. They endured the training to become soldiers, saw their comrades die numerous times, and fought for a better tomorrow and they’re calling them inhumane? The nerve on these safe-haven seeking assholes is truly astounding. It’s good that Eren is finally smacking some sens-

Too fabulous.

This. Is. Why. Levi. Is. Fucking. Number 1. That’s fucking right bitches. THAT’S HOW YOU GET SHIT DONE. Brutal, to the point, and extremely effective. There was really no better way to get Eren out of this situation and I have to say that they played their cards perfectly. By putting Levi in a position of superiority over Eren the Supreme Commander is able to trust Levi with being able to deal with him. If he hadn’t done this, then the question of “are you sure you can handle him” will obviously pop up. With this, it’s no longer necessary and the choice is much clearer. Though, Eren is absolutely scared of Levi now. Eren’s regenerative powers are amazing now that he’s turned into a Titan a couple of times. Things are really going to get interesting now and we’ll be seeing more of Levi’s abilities as a Captain as well as how everyone will cooperate to truly combat the Titans.

Shingeki no Kyojin Episode 14 Review

This may not be an action packed episode, but damn is it just awesome. What’s surprising that I got an even stronger feeling watching it instead of reading it. That’s partially due to the great voice actors and the impacting sounds that adds that much more. It also highlights some of the social problems nicely, but it seems a bit skimmed over at times. Though, since that’s not the primary focus of the anime, I can’t discredit them greatly for that. Otherwise, it’s a great episode that lets non-manga readers appreciate Levi as a character. I think next episode will have just a bit more of the character developments and introductions before we move on to the actual mission outside the walls where plenty of things will happen.

    • Entrav

I like both the opening and the ending. I think I like them around as much as I liked the last opening and ending. The opening is especially fitting this time though.

    • Irenesharda

I actually ship AnniexReiner. I think those two have better chemistry. I honestly haven’t even seen Annie and Berthold in the same scene together except for some still shots.

  • mARCOS

I love the “NOT AT ALL”. I already got somethings spoiled for having a SNK fan page in facebook.

Love the review, and angry Mikasa in the background jajaja

    • Entrav

Some people in Danganronpa decided to spoil some things. Kind of minor, but I realized that it wasn’t big enough so I made it bigger. I might really have to make it flashing. Seriously.

      Thanks a lot :)

  • Gamematio

Guy: “I want to fuck SNK!!!”
Me: “And I thought SAO was over rated -_-”

    Love them both btw.
(SNK is Attack on Titan btw)

    • Entrav

LOOOOOOOOOOL. To be honest, SnK is really over-rated. It’s not THAT good like some people on MyAnimeList think, and it’s certainly not as bad as some of them think either.

      • Kencana

SnK is GOOD because it potray woman at better side. Other than FMA, I don’t remember reading shonen series that have so many woman and don’t treat them as fanservice object. Plus the top ten student is a WOMAN.

        • Entrav

That’s an interesting reason, but it’s far from one of the only two that don’t treat women as fanservice objects.

Bakuman, Durarara, Tsubasa Chronicles, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Hunter X Hunter, Inuyasha, D Gray Man, Rurouni Kenshin, and the list goes on.

          • Kencana

Yes. But those series tend to sidelines woman. Major important character tend to be male. Don’t get me wrong. I love those series that you mention. The woman are awesome. But male : female ratio is like 4 : 1. While at Snk I can name seven woman that have important roles.

            Bakuman: sexist comment toward woman.

Durarara: It’s good. Celty, Anri, Namie, etc rocks. But sometimes camera tend to focus at Anri’s big boobs. There’s problematic stuff with Shinra & Celty too.

TRC: The only one that have major lines is Sakura. Yuuko, and Tomoyo barely get lines.

KHR: The man : woman scale is ugh. Kyoko and Haru are nice, but only serves as love interest. The rest of them? Barely get enough screen time.

            D. Gray-Man: Honestly, I can only remember Lenalee, Miranda, and Road.

Kenshin: Kaori and Megumi are awesome. Sadly, those two rare get their own battle. But I understand. This is 80 comic.

          • Entrav

Seven that have important roles? That’s a bit of a stretch, but the ratio of male to female is definitely better than some others. If you really wanted some shounen with prominent female characters, there are those as well like Gunbuster and others that I can’t really remember right now.

Yes, there’s fanservice, but so what? It doesn’t matter of women show off their sexuality does it? I’m not saying that it should be overly done to distract from everything else though, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with fanservice.

I haven’t watched or read Bakuman for quite some time, but I hardly remember sexist comments towards women that are nothing more than harmless jokes if even that. As for Durarara, I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with a bit of fanservice here and there. It’s not really taking away from anything, and it does sell.

Anyways, I don’t mind what the ratios are personally, but I can understand why others would care and value it higher than I do. I just enjoy the dark elements of the story and what’s to come in the future behind all the mysteries that the series presents. The female characters in this anime are pretty awesome though, can’t deny that.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

The birth of a love triangle. And what a rough love it’ll be especially with such a maso MC.

Now then, a trial. Didnt expect that one! This show is fixing it’s past mistakes, especially the 3 episodes of pointless filler. What I liked a lot was the fact that a representative from all the different groups/aspects of humanity was present there. From the corrupt, to the religious fanatics and the righteous few.

I’m curious to see what their tactics will be from now on. They took a big risk revealing their strategy to reach Eren’s house to such a large audience. I guess they’re trying to flush out potential spies or traitors. Can’t wait to see how.

The show is back on the right track and as long as they won’t bore the audience with pointless filler, they’ll prove that this isn’t just another SAO with an awesome opening that was completely ruined by an extremely weak second arc.

P.S. Have you seen WataMote? If not, do it! You won’t be disappointed!

  • Irenesharda

Well, it took me a bit to watch this, because this is the one and only scene in which I had already been spoiled for and I really didn’t want to watch Levi ( a character I hardly know) beat up on Eren (a character I have grown to know and love) however, after watching the whole thing, I can see why he did it, even if he was a little overboard. As much as you praise him, is also the reason that I still can’t get on board with him. Unlike L-elf who we got used to since the beginning, Levi just decided to show up half way through and I just can’t like him for what he did here. I don’t WANT to see Eren scared of Levi, I like him the way he is. I am used to Eren as MC and I’d like to keep it that way. If they were equals, friends, even rivals, I could role with it. But I don’t want Eren to be some subservient thing that obey’s Levi’s every command. I like his spirit and independence and his strength of will. I don’t want that to change.

I think this episode had Mikasa best death glare yet. If I was Levi, I was watch out for Mikasa at all cost. Even IF Levi happens to be stronger than Mikasa (which I’m not sure of at all), there is nothing like a woman with a grudge or something precious to protect. She might play nice at first, but just when you think it’s all over and she’s forgotten, she will strike like a cobra! And you can be sure that it will be very, very painful…

We see that there are quite a bit of politics involved here, it’s more than just fighting Titans. There are the many varieties of humans with differing goals to think about to. I also though it interesting that each level of the wall you go, the more posh and well off it seems. The people in Wall Sina look like they came out of a Turn of the Century painting, while everyone else looks like they are in different levels of Medieval.

The trial was one that showed the feelings of all sides and we can again see how fast fear can take control. It even began to feel like a witch hunt as the used Eren and Mikasa’s past against them and even tried to accuse Mikasa of being a Titan as well. Eren makes up for his previous douchiness when he angrily speaks up for her, in order to protect her from pointing fingers.

The weird Recon Corp, with the violent help of Levi, get him placed into their custody rather than dissected and they are happy to have him in their weirdo family. Even that really nice Commander Smith looks too nice to be trusted, he reminds me too much of Col. Cain of Valvrave, even right down to the seiyuu. However, I’m wonder what’s going to happen next. We now have so many different characters to look at, from the new Recon Corp that will be introduced more next week, to the already presented Training Corp that we have begun to know already. Are all the other characters going to disappear, in favor of the new ones, or will we have some balance?

I don’t know at all what to expect in the coming episodes, but I hope it will be as interesting as the last set. Shingeki has become a phenomenon, and its doing its best to live up to that.

As for the new OP and ED, I like the new OP even if it didn’t wow me as much as the first one. The imagery isn’t as good, and the song sounds rushed with a little too much guitar at points, but I like the sort of military/national anthem part in the beginning. It was a nice change of tone that still suits the shows theme. It also has some of the some motifs from the Guren no Yumiya, so the songs sound like they belong together.

As for the ED, it’s good, but it’s not very memorable. Though, just like the first one, it has excellent visuals.

I give this episode an 8/10. I will be very interested to see where this show will be going in the future.

    • Entrav

I don’t think Eren will be a “subservient thing that obeys Levi’s every command.” He’s just scared of him right now because he got beat up so badly. Such a reaction is normal. You’ll see later why this is not the case as well, but I can certainly understand why you get that impression currently. Eren’s will to become humanity’s hope will not change. It’s not like one incident will make him completely different.

Personally, I don’t mind if a currently undeveloped character like Levi comes up and does this to Eren as long as he has his reasons. We’ll see him developed more anyways, but of course the focus will still be our main protagonists so far. It’s just that we’ll have more side characters to help Eren along.

      • Irenesharda

Well…okay, I’ll roll with it. He didn’t seem that bad of guy by the very end. I still think he should look out for Mikasa though. That woman has had death glances before, but that one spelled M-U-R-D-E-R.

I honestly wonder who far this series is going to go. They “say” 25 episodes, but this is the hit series right now and I can’t see them giving up this franchise for quite a while. Will we get the entire series in anime form?

Also, I’m wondering if we should be angry at the show for showing up a potential spoiler in the form of a female titan in the OP? I wonder who got experimented on this time. Most bets are on either Zoe or Mikasa. I’m going with Zoe, even though Mikasa would also be an interesting choice. If it IS her, than that line about him being the monster, but not her, has more foreboding than was originally thought.

        • Entrav

All I’ll say is that the manga is nowhere near done, and the anime is going at a very slow pace. I’m almost certain we’ll get a second season sometime in the future with these ridiculous sales that have been forecasted. Though, it’s slumped a lot since the first volume so we’ll have to see how well it does overall.

Openings have a tendency of spoiling things, but I don’t think it’s that bad in this case. It’s more like a teaser than a spoiler I suppose.

That’s Marco not Bert T_T Why can’t anyone tell the obvious difference between those two.

    • Anonymous

Marco is dead by this time, he died an episode before. It definitely isn’t Bertholdt though, it looks like an extra.

      • Anon

No it’s Marco, it was a flashback to their trainee days ^.^
