It’s finally upon us. Many people are a bit too hyped, and while it was number 1 on my most anticipated anime of this season, I can’t say I’m as hyped as some people are. Nonetheless, this is one of the only times that an anime is targeting the west as the audience in a major way. So, how does it play out?

Space Dandy Episode 1 Impressions

Thanks for that.

They found Honey? Or did they just abduct her?… Or it’s just the narrator.

OPPAI. OPPAI. OPPAI. OPPAI.

But that’s all they really show a lot of the time.

Leave it up to Dandy.

Wow, a robot is telling us this. The future is grim, but we men will not listen to such deception. Oh, no. It’s all about the-

I doubt there are those who “only” check out breasts. Impossible.

MFW I Googled that. And you should Google that.

Best narrator.

BOOBIES!

THERE’S A RARE ALIEN RIGHT THERE IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I don’t really know what I mean.
But ass.

Guys, let’s make this a reality.
We can put our differences aside for this, right?
Let’s unite, and make BREASTAURANTS ACROSS THE GALAXY.

Now that’s a dream.

QT Robot

MFW no pervy robot. Dandy should install an app on that outdated machine.

Space Dandy Honey

BOOBIES.

YES.

MAGGOT.

Well, you’re the dandiest guy in the universe so make it happen.

This guy…

ERU ERUFU must have given him some training.

I would watch this show just for the random alien fights even if the rest isn’t that great.

DEM ANIMATIONS.

Very impressive.

Hope the animations can stay at this level throughout.

THUMB UP.

What if a person didn’t know that was a weapon of mass destruction?

You have that much energy remaining and you can’t beam yourselves up back quickly?
Real dandy.

Die.

lolsrsly?

lolok.

Well…

Yeah…

Real dandy.

Space Dandy Episode 1 Review

Before we move on to any actual critique, let’s talk about the English version versus the Japanese version. Now, of course, this is a topic in and of itself so I won’t start a debate over it. Nonetheless, please remember that some things are lost in translation, and sometimes they may change “some parts that were actually important elements for the characters and story.” You can check this link for precisely what he means. On a personal level, I found some parts of the English version to be funnier than the ones in the Japanese version. For example, the “0 g meets double Ds” part, the “I can’t read circle,” and some other lines are in the English version only. And heck, it’s nice to watch anime in a language I am familiar with instead of looking down at the subtitles. Of course, I find certain parts to be better in the Japanese version as well. The voice acting in both versions are great, so going with either is fine, but if you want it to be as close to the intended experience as possible, you may want to watch the Japanese version instead.

As for the actual episode, while I did find it to be visually awesome, I find this episode to be quite average. I understand that it’s supposed to be crazy fun, and the possibilities are endless in this universe. It’s a slice of life in space… with Dandy, Space Dandy. Though, the show didn’t make me laugh as much as it was trying to, but it does have a crazy style going for it that makes me interested to see more. Watanabe Shinichiro did say that this anime is not meant to be taken seriously, and how this episode ends shows that. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they decide to surprise us with a few more serious episodes that may have some emotional impact. Currently, the aspect that intrigues me the most is the setting itself. I think that, as long as it has a unique variety of places for Dandy to go to, Space Dandy will be a show I am willing to watch even if the humor is bland.

Dandy himself is looking to be an enjoyable character to watch with, what he says to be, his purposeful failures, and his dandiness, but if this episode made me realize anything it’s that those who are hyped need to tone down their expectations of this show. This episode certainly does not meet the hype that surrounds this series, but it’s not as if this episode alone is going to determine how great this anime will end up being. This may just be the kind of show that needs a few episodes to develop before we become engrossed into the setting, the characters, or whatever else it decides to throw at us. I have faith in the people who are behind this show, and while it may not turn out to be a masterpiece that reachs some people’s absurd expectations, I think it’ll still be an entertaining adventure nonetheless. Just sit back, relax, and be dandy.

Already did. I’ll probably end up reviewing the first episode of Noragami. I’m probably not going to end up reviewing Nobunaga until it settles down a bit and we get more explanations.

      • Irenesharda

Yeah, Nobunaga was a bit better and also a bit worse than Buddy Complex. It was a good start but fell bogged down with exposition and history and has the potential to be a mish mash that get’s so involved with the IDEA of it’s own plot, that it ends up lacking in execution.

Buddy Complex in comparison, had a rather generic and bland first showing, but at least it was straight forward, made sense, and didn’t have a ton of exposition.

  • Vandor

This show reminds me a bit of Deep Space, by MondoMedia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp8LCifX3JA&list=ELKNoblxVLyfk . Warning, might contain offensive stuff(Well, this from the guys that made happy tree friends, so…)

  • MegaAnimeFreak7

BTW, what the heck is “Keikaku Doori”?

    • MACHA

      “JUST AS PLANNED.”

  • http://thehugeanimefan.blogspot.com/ Cassandra @The Huge Anime Fan

I think the amount of boobs was put on high.

While I was one of the people actually in the sphere of hype of Space Dandy the first episode was average. The animation was awesome as to expected of BONES although story-wise I’m on the fence.

I’ll still continue watching because I truly believe in Shinichiro Watanabe.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yep, I’ll keep watching just because of the staff behind it.

  • Flaiboy

While I agree with Dandy that the ass is where it’s at, I won’t be joining my alien-hunting brother on a weekly basis. Something about this season gives me the impression that I’ll be able to make my drops this winter after the first episode . . .

Artistically fun, like KlK, but just not very interesting beyond that (I’ve had enough of the “Bumbling Space Jockey” trope), also like KlK.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yep, this season is a good time to go back and watch other shows that you missed.

      • Flaiboy

        Yeah, I’ve archived Monogatari, Kyousou Giga, White Album 2 . . .

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Just make sure you know how to progress through the Monogatari Series properly. Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, and so on. I’m not sure if you should watch Nekomonogatari: Kuro before Bakemonogatari or not, but I’d recommend you to just watch Bakemonogatari first. Other than that, have a nice time listening to some dialogue and watching the SHAFT animations. :)

I still need to finish Kyousougiga as well. It’ll be interesting hearing your thoughts after you finish White Album 2. I don’t expect people to appreciate it as much as I do, so I’m interested in seeing other people’s viewpoints.

          • Flaiboy

I’m current up through Kuro; I just need to watch Second Season.

“It’ll be interesting hearing your thoughts after you finish White Album
            2. I don’t expect people to appreciate it as much as I do”.

You must be a hopeless romantic, then! I never know how a romance show will sit with me. They’re not my usual cup of tea, fairly formulaic, but I’ve heard and read some good things so I thought I would give it a try.

  • Irenesharda

I didn’t even think this show would be for me, nothing it showed is what I usually watch, and so I wasn’t even going to watch much less having any expectations. However, after hearing all the hype, I decided to check it out. And I had a pretty good time!

Of course, being a woman the fanservice was ridiculous and had no meaning for me, but even then there were a few gags like the girls being strapped to the blow up alien that were funny. I like the whole breaking of the 4th wall, the comedy was also pretty funny as well with all the references and in-jokes. The whole “thumbs up” Terminator 2 parody scene was a good example, or the dub’s inclusion of the famous Buzz Lightyear line “infinity…and beyond”. QT was cute and Meow had funny dead pan humor. It’s the sort of show just to watch for laughs and if you have no expectations going in like I had, you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised.

I will be keeping to the dub since some of the jokes they use are pretty funny, and it’s a very good dub which is a plus for me.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I didn’t notice the thumbs up at first. They did add quite a bit of things here and there, but what really got me were just some lines in the English version that cannot be said in the Japanese version. Looks like I’ll be watching the episodes twice to check out the differences.

  • Ayame Niji

I was really waiting for this but when I watched it for the first time (with English dub) I was like: WTF is this?!?! I kind of felt it’s full of in-jokes but it was just so fast paced I could hardly catch any of them. But the music and the visuals were awesome at first sight, too. I was curious about the original Japanese (my vote goes for this version) so I watched it again – this time I enjoyed it from the first moment to the last. I guess this is the type of story that the more you see it the more you love it. XD Dandy totally reminds me of Ford Fairlane (from the Advantures of F.F.), I caught the Star Wars references (Meow reminds me of Jar Jar), and many other movie and anime homages.
Although being a female, I’m not in the target of the fanservice, I think guys deserve some curves – we girls got our dosage of MUSCLES last year so we are generous. XD
Anyway, I’ll definitely follow this show and am prepared for some real fun.

  • niknasr

    Yes, “it sure is dandy”..
I don’t know how to say this, but all the shows I have watched so far cannot give me as much impact as I want, and Space Dandy is no exception. they all just average.. But, nonetheless I will watch it.. Maybe, it’s because the lingering feelings I have for White Album 2 still strong.. :)

Btw, I hope you will do a review for Imocho..I think many people exaggerated and outright saying it’s a bad show.. I’m not saying it’s a good show either, but I think it doesn’t deserve that kind of harsh treatment..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’d say give it at least 3 episodes because there are many shows that just take a while to get started. I totally agree with you that this episode doesn’t captivate me or anything like that.

D-Frag is definitely pretty awesome, but different shows have different ways of doing things. I’m just curious to see how this anime will turn out because it is making an appeal to the west unlike almost all other anime.

      • niknasr

yep, true that.. Really hope that it live to the hype and not become kyoukana v2..
