Spring 2014 Anime Preview
Are you ready for the WINCEST?

MUSHI, JOJO, WINCEST.
Spring 2014 Anime (PREVIEW)
(Scroll down for latest content. This will be on top for a few days)

Spring has always been a jam packed season and this one is no exception. With Mushishi finally making a return after almost a decade, Jojo continuing its bizarreness, MAHOUKA NO WINCEST COMMENCING THE WINCEST, PING PONG CONTINUING THE PING, and many other shows with plenty of potential, it’s good to see a season like this. Granted, if you haven’t seen Mushishi or Jojo, then you probably would find this season not too strong, but if you have, this season is a taste of what 2014 will bring us (FATE STAY NIGHT RIGHT GUYZ?!). Let’s get started.

Note: I am only previewing TV Series that I will at least watch the first episode of. I will not preview series that I haven’t watched previous seasons of either. I skipped out on a lot of series and didn’t add in the links this time around to save time. My apologies. Something special should be out in the next few days to compensate. For a list of all airing anime in spring 2014, please refer to this list.

Tiered System

Within the tier, it starts from what I least anticipate to what I most anticipate. The last (most anticipated) few ones of the tier can sometimes be fairly close to the next tier. Consequently, the first few of each tier can sometimes be close to the previous tier. The tiers are not relative to the anime in each season. This means that there are no fixed number of any tier for any season. It’s possible for there to be no tier ones. The number of tier one and tier two anime are probably good indicators of how good the season looks at a glance. I have removed the status because I’ve changed the way I am reviewing episodically. Refer to this post for more information.

Note: These are tentative. Also, if any anime, regardless of tier, has great episodes, I will try to do reviews.

Tier 4: Least anticipated – Will try it out, but very prone to being dropped.

Tier 3: Moderately anticipated – Looks at least somewhat interesting. Will probably hold out for a few episodes.

Tier 2: Heavily anticipated – At first glance, appears to be above average. Three episode rule at least.

Tier 1: Extremely anticipated – Very promising looking anime that I will most likely watch every episode of.

TIER 4 (Least Anticipated)

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

Bokura wa minna Kawaisou Anime

Yeah…

After quickly skipping through some manga chapters and watching the preview, I can’t say I’m looking forward to this series at all. It looks like it’ll be a show that continuously teases the romance between the female and male lead while padding the episodes out with comedy and random antics. If you’re looking for a drama and romance anime, you’re probably going to have to look elsewhere as this one is going to be a calm slice of life more than anything else. Could I be underestimating this show like I did with Non Non Biyori? Perhaps, but it’s not often that you see a tranquil anime like Non Non Biyori that calms your soul like almost no other anime. If this anime can capture a similar feeling then I’d be ecstatic, but the staff behind Non Non Biyori seem to be more experienced with this type of anime than the staff for Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou. I’m wary to say the least.

Blade and Soul

Blade and Soul Anime

Too bad they couldn’t replicate DEM CURVES from the game.
That would have been some HAWT interesting animations.

An anime adaptation of a Korean MMORPG eh? I actually remember seeing this official trailer back in 2009 and being pretty amazed by it. By dem bodies that is. I mean seriously, DEM CHARACTER DESIGNS FOR THE GAME. Who would have thought that it’d get an anime adaptation of all things? One can’t possibly expect much from an adaptation like this right? Well, perhaps Hamasaki Hiroshi, the director of Steins;Gate will instill a bit of anticipation for you even with a title like this. From the looks of the preview, it looks like those series that will have an episode where there’s a nice action scene and the rest of the episodes will have nothing of the sort. Yes, I’m looking at you Wizard Barristers. If it weren’t for the director, I’d probably skip this anime altogether, but it’s got my interest for an episode now at least.

Seikoku no Dragonar

Seikoku no Dragonar

PROFESSIONAL CENSORING.

You know what anime needs more of? Fucking dragons. Boobs are nice and all, but dragons mang, dragons are where its at. I’M TRYING TO GET MY FIX BEFORE THE NEXT SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES COMES OUT, OKAY? It’s pretty disappointing that after showing dragons for about two seconds in the preview that they decide to switch it to boobs. Otaku of Japan, aren’t you all getting tired of how they blatantly show that all the damn time? It’s nice to have it once in a while, but when the show has dragons, they could seriously just, you know, show more fucking dragons?! Okay, shit, boobs and dragons is where it’s at. Whatever. I can already see this becoming the typical ecchi type of show with not so great humor. Please, show more dragons with the boobs and not just the boobs and I’ll be happy.

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun

Dem curves. You got me watching for that at least.

What erotic curves the female protagonist has. But wait! It may not just be all about fanservice and action! Dai Sato, one of the people behind shows like Ergo Proxy and Eureka Seven is responsible for the series composition. This doesn’t look to be the show that will blow my mind until I read one of the lines in the synopsis that is “I can be the greatest man in the world, because I am a virgin!!” Wow. You’ve got my attention now Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun. I wonder how this is going to relate to giant mechs and hot girls. We all know the main protagonist will be keeping his virginity for some time to come for that is the destiny of most male leads in anime. Oh how sad even though they live in a world with giant mechs and women ready to take off their clothes at every passing scene. This is just what we needed. Yeah.

Tier 3 (Moderately Anticipated)

Baby Steps

Baby steps adaptation

PRINCE OF TENNIS WITHOUT THE SUPER POWERS.

I’m not very into sports manga or anime, but I have watched all of Prince of Tennis which I greatly enjoyed and I dabbled in Eyeshield 21 which I also found to be great. I didn’t finish it though even though I was so far into it. That’s just what tends to happen sometimes when I stop reading a manga. Anyways, I don’t think it’s fair to call it a “Prince of Tennis ripoff” or anything like that until we’ve seen more of this anime. The manga got some pretty good reception, and manga readers say that there are no “super moves” like the twist serve or whatever. I don’t really like to watch sports anime week to week as I’d rather marathon it all when it’s over as I tend to anticipate the next episode only for 20 minutes to come out and the cycle repeats over and over again. It’s a bit too troublesome for me to do it for other anime as well as sports anime so I’ll see how the reviews turn out when it is over and maybe I’ll watch it then. Looks like sports fans have some potentially good shows to look forward to this season though.

Selector Infected WIXOSS

Selector Infected WIXOSS

Didn’t watch the first episode, but some people said it was not that great.

Oh boy, is the “game” mentioned in this anime going to be a card game? I sure don’t have enough Hearthstone in my life to satisfy me already. Having a card game in anime format is exactly what I needed. Okay, okay, but what do you expect me to say with this strange preview? It looks like this game may be a game of life and death between these girls that could have been in a world like Sakura Trick doing naughty things to one another, but it’s too bad that’s never meant to be. With Okada Mari doing the series composition they can be sure that they’re strapped on for one melodramatic roller-coaster ride with hopes crushed and tears flowing. The director has certainly caught my eye though. All I can hope for is that it’ll actually be “psychological” and not just full of angst. OkadaMaripls.

Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin

Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin

Not really feeling it for this anime.

I won’t blame you if the premise reminds you of AnoHana, but looking at the preview, it’s probably going to be far more lighthearted. It’s just that the previews haven’t made me interested in checking this series out. What is slightly interesting is the premise which may have mystery elements related to finding Nanana’s treasure. The series composer has me interested. Still, outside of that I’m just not very drawn to the tone of the show and what the previews contain. Can it maintain people’s interest with its lighthearted tone? Can it pull off the comedy correctly? That’ll determine its success.

Akuma no Riddle

Akuma no Riddle

Yuri fans rejoice.

If the previews showed anything it’s that this anime has great visuals. That alone is enough for many people to check out at least the first episode myself included. It looks to be a survival anime much like Mirai Nikki which brings interesting prospects for the show. After quickly skipping through the first episode, yes it pre-aired on NicoNico but I can’t stand the quality, it looks to be taking a serious tone where hopefully the animations can complement the upcoming action. With these type of survival anime, it needs some interesting side-characters to keep the conflicts fresh otherwise they’d get repetitive. Personally, I’d love to see some mind games and not just action dictating the flow of the story as sometimes that can be far more enticing than blood splattering across the screen. I’ll be keeping an eye on this.

Escha & Logy no Atelier: Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi

Escha Logy no Atelier Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi

MAKE MY GUESS PROUD.

That is one long name. It’s even longer than OreGairu. Good lord. But hey, at least the animations are solid. This is animated by the recently formed Studio Gokumi. While they do not have a long track record, for the most part it’s pretty solid. I’m not sure about the director, but the series composer/script writer is impressive which is especially important for an anime adaptation of a game. Game reviews have been quite positive, but no one knows how well that’ll translate to anime format. Reading through the reviews, the positivity isn’t really aimed at the story but rather at the game mechanics which doesn’t bode well for this anime adaptation. This is one you could skip and come back later if there are positive reviews. You probably won’t be missing much.

Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu anime adaptation

I’m okay with this.
Nothing wrong with a Kuroko no Basket of volleyball.

I didn’t read the manga, but I mainly see this being the Kuroko no Basket of volleyball. I’m probably going to make some fangirls mad by saying this, but IT’S OKAY. I’M ON YOUR SIDE. I ENJOYED KUROKO NO BASKET. And besides, it’s Production I.G. doing the animations again so at least it’ll look great in some parts like when they spike. If you’ve run out of some Kuroko no Basket shounen sports juice, then this should be a good fix for you this season. As long as it has the same intensity as Kuroko no Basket then I’ll be happy to watch this throughout. It sure is a nice feeling when the characters do triumph after a long and difficult game full of back and forth.

Gokukoku no Brynhildr

Gokukoku no Brynhildr

BLOOOOOOOOD.
And tits.

Brought to you by the creator of Elfen Lied, we have what may be another bloody mess on our hands. Interpret the “mess” part as you wish. Regardless, after reading a few chapters of the manga, I can see how it tries to mix the fantasy side pertaining to magic with the sci-fi side. This blend can be interesting and the tone of the show is quite unsettling at times as you’d expect from the creator of Elfen Lied. Will this be a show that uses gore as its main method of captivation or will it tell an intriguing story mixing fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, and the darker aspects well? Well, the name of the creator has at least got me watching for a few episodes.

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to anime

This guy knows where it’s at.

If you’re looking for some lighthearted fun, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to is most likely going to have you covered. The manga is very light (8 pages per chapter) and focuses on gags as you’d expect. This kind of show will probably end up being one of those comedy shows every season much like how D-Frag was that kind of show for the previous season. If you enjoy those types of shows then this one should be one to keep an eye out for. The manga does a good job of giving me some cheap laughs even with the short format. The mangaka sure has a lot of creativity to keep this up for 150+ chapters. Yeah… dem boobs though. HEH.

Hitsugi no Chaika

Hitsugi no Chaika

DEM EYEBROWS.

First off, DEM EYEBROWS. Created by creator of Outbreak Company and Scrapped PrincessHitsugi no Chaika is going to be satisfying those of you wanting to see more of BONES’ animations. Other than that, the staff behind this anime has got some decent experience, and… I really don’t know what else to think about this anime. The premise doesn’t say much, and there’s no source material for me to look at. At the very least this one is worth checking out because of BONES and the staff behind this anime. Other than that, only time will tell whether those eyebrows will make the show proud or not.

Date A Live Season 2

Date A Live Season 2 Izayoi Miku

Just give me dem boobs.
GIVE ME ALL OF THE FANSERVICE.
I’LL TAKE IT WITH MY MIND TURNED OFF.

Didn’t think I was going to talk about this show now did you? Well, I initially dropped Date A Live, but I picked it back up because of a spoiler Youtube video that had some intriguing developments. Does it get better at the end of the season? It does, but not as much as it needs to for me to openly recommend this show. Look, if you can turn your brain off and just enjoy some pantsu and boobs flying across the screen with some action then you’ll probably have fun with this series. It’s silly entertainment and it may or may not be your type of show. Some episodes are almost painful while others are actually quite enjoyable especially at the end. I’ll still be watching this second season because of dem girls. If it looks too stupid for you then move on, you’re not missing that much.

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka

I’VE LEARNED ONE IMPORTANT THING DOING THESE SEASONAL PREVIEWS.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THESE TYPES OF SHOWS.

DO YOU LIKE CUTE STUFF? I HOPE YOU LIKE CUTE STUFF. BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T, YOU’RE NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS CUTENESS. I mean holy shit just look at the preview. No. Just listen to it. Chino, voiced by Minase Inori has the most ridiculously adorable voice. God. MY HEARTO. No, I’m not suffering from diabetes. But if Non Non Biyori and the reception of Kiniro Mosaic has taught me anything its that these shows are not to be underestimated. It can seriously bring you diabetes if you’re not prepared. If you’re home from a long day of brutal work, just turn on some of this moeblob goodness and energy will seep into your soul once more energizing you to continue with your day. Yes. That is the power of moe. Don’t hate.

Black Bullet

Black Bullet Anime

Better not end up being those cliche harem shows with random supernatural, sci-fi, or whatever aspects attached loosely to it.

I looked into this a bit when this was first announced to be an anime adaptation and I now just read some more. The manga comes off as fairly dark even though the preview may not look that way. What really interests me is the antagonist presented as he’s quite… crazy. I can’t quite say that the premise is original for it reminds me of some other anime and yet I can’t quite liken this to anything either. With fripside doing the opening and Yanagi Nagi doing the ED I’ll be sure to check at least the first episode out. While I doubt this will be anything great, it may bring some weekly entertainment with regards to the action and the mystery related to the Gastrea virus.

Isshuukan Friends.

Isshukan Friends

Friends for a week.
CAN YOU TAKE THE PAIN?!

Now this is an interesting one. The premise is what has me intrigued. It seems that the female protagonist, Fujimiya Kaori loses her happy memories and the memories of her friends in a week. In essence, the male protagonist will have to start anew every single week and try to be friends with her again and again. It reminds me of 50 First Dates. This type of show certainly has potential especially when she loses her memories the first time as it can make for some very emotional scenes. The preview does have me a bit worried though because I’m getting some serious melodramatic vibes from it. I’ll be as cautious as always with romance anime, but this is something to look forward to if you’re a fan of romance.

Tier 2 (Heavily Anticipated)

M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane

M3 Sono Kuroki Hagane

The mechs sure don’t look that great.

I don’t know what to make of this preview. I don’t. Okay, we have mechs, but the premise looks grim dark. What’s interesting is that Sato Junichi and Okada Mari are working together for this. The former has quite an impressive track record and the latter has, as you should all know by now, quite the melodramatic track record. Perhaps they’ll be able to maintain a delicate balance fitting for this type of anime. The idea of the Avidya Zone which is a blackness that swallows everything and the expedition of eight characters can make for quite a unique story. I expect themes of futility, hopelessness, death, and so on to be the primary ones in this show. I love myself some grim dark shows so this one will be one I’ll be happy to follow even if it doesn’t end up being all too great.

Captain Earth

Captain Earth Anime

IS IT TIME FOR SOME FABULOUSNESS?!

Captain Planet? No? APPRIVOSE?! YES. This is an original mecha anime made by the team that created Star Driver AKA the FABULOUS BISHOUNEN APPRIVOSE MONOCHROME GOODNESS. Are we finally going to get a good mecha anime? Is it about time? Valvrave is crazy awesomeness regardless of how it ended, but I want to see an actual solid mecha show playing out the genre properly. We sure haven’t had any of that recently and it looks like Captain Earth holds the most potential this season to do so. As much as I enjoy seeing the GINGA BISHOUNEN FABULOUSNESS I hope that the team realizes their faults in that previous work and builds upon it. The conflicts in Star Driver were extremely repetitive and the overall storyline just wasn’t that interesting. The music was fantastic, but the content aside from the fabulousness was seriously lacking. Can Captain Earth be a mecha anime I will look forward to every week? We’ll have to wait and see.

Mekaku City Actors

Mekaku City Actors

SHAFTILTS.

Yes, this is a SHAFT anime adaptation of Kagerou Days which has been well received. After reading half a dozen chapters of the manga, I can see why. To put it simply, it’s interesting. The premise and the developments are quite original and I enjoyed seeing how the characters with their unusual characteristic dealt with the first conflict. Add in the SHAFT visual style and you have a recipe for success. Apparently it gets a bit darker later on with regards to the characters’ pasts which sounds even more interesting as it’s been pretty lighthearted so far. This may just be the hidden gem of this season and it’s probably in your best interest to at least check a few episodes out.

Sidonia no Kishi

Sidonia no Kishi CGI

CGI goodness?

This first preview is one of the closest previews to looking and sounding like a western film trailer. The second preview shows that, like Aoki Hagane, this anime is going to be using full on CGI. Is this beautiful CGI? Well, it’s a 1-cour anime so don’t expect anything close to the Captain Harlock movie in terms of CGI quality. It’s much like Aoki Hagane which may work out well for the mecha action scenes as they could utilize the CGI to their advantage during those scenes. As for the source material… I’d say the tone of it is similar to that of Shingeki no Kyojin’s. Humans are fighting against a strange alien race for survival and the whole situation within Sidonia, a giant “seed ship” that has traveled for thousands of years in space after the aliens destroyed the solar system. Quite an interesting premise, no? Even if you’re not a fan of the CGI, I think it’s good to at least give this anime a few episodes for this survival story may hold great promise. The series composer is great, and the music, which you heard from the previews, is something you’d expect from someone like Asakura Noriyuki. I’m looking how this lonely, bleak, and probably despairing anime has to offer. Count me in.

PING PONG THE ANIMATION

Ping pong the animation 2014

PINGPONGPINGPONGPINGPONGPINGPONGPONGPONGPINGPONGPINGPONG.

Okay. Okay. Check this MANDO out. Chinese too stronk. But wait, that’s not all. DON’T FORGET IT’S FUCKING PING PONG. PING. FUCKING. PONG. GOT IT?! GOOD. Now, I’m going to drop another bomb on you and say that this is directed by Yuasa Masaaki. Who is that you ask? The man responsible for directing and scripting Tatami Galaxy, that’s who. Not to mention how he’s gotten a good amount of praise for his other works. Are you hyped yet? Look at those ping pong balls. Imagine the possibilities. Imagine the smashes. Imagine the ping pong. Imagine the imagine. Waitwat- IMAGINE THE PING PONG ANIMATION. NOW GET HYPED.

Kenzen Robo Daimidaler

Kenzen Robo Daimidaler

THIS SHALL SATISFY MY INNER DXD SIDE.

Is… IS THIS HIGH SCHOOL DXD MECHA VERSION?! Is… IS THAT THE RIAS PLOT? IS THAT THE PLOT FONDLING WE ALL NEED?! EVEN THE DIRECTOR FOR THIS ANIME WAS THE DIRECTOR FOR DXD?! EVEN THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR SERIES COMPOSITION?! I’m fucking in. Well, I certainly didn’t expect that from just looking at the picture which… seriously needs to be changed for marketing purposes. Having a picture of the main protagonist fondling some OPPAI should do the trick. But seriously, just watch this preview and tell me you’re not looking forward to this. I expected to see some bland mecha, but this show is going the pure fun comedic path which I need more of from anime with giant mechs. It’ll be silly, it’ll be perverted, it’ll be GLORIOUS! I hope. As long as it stays nonsensical with some good humor then this may just be one of those under-watched shows of the season. I’ll definitely check this out. And you know what you also need to check out? Its official site. I could learn a thing or two of web design from these guys. Holy shit.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii Anime

The manga is surprisingly enjoyable.
AM I ACTUALLY INTO SHOUJO ANIMU?
Oh mang.

I have to admit that the preview is kind of cute. OH GOD AM I INTO SHOUJO ANIMU OR SOMETHING?! I won’t lie. I’m interested in seeing how the romance will play out between an older woman and a young boy… Well, that came out really wrong… Awwwkwarrddd… Anyways, I love the romance genre, but I’m fairly hard to please when it comes to drama shows in general, but if a show does it well then I’ll be all over it. So, after writing that, I decided to read a few chapters of the manga and interestingly enough I was pretty drawn to it. At least drawn enough to read it for 30 minutes even though it’s 3am and I have a ton of other things to do as well. Is that a good sign? Yes it is, and that just boosted my anticipation for this series. The most notable aspect of the manga that I greatly enjoy is how its very focused on how the female and male lead feel towards each other or just how they feel in general. There aren’t many distractions that take away from this which allows the manga to flesh out the two characters as well as the relationship between the two well. It’s also fantastic to see a strong female protagonist for once that doesn’t immediately fall for the male protagonist right away. It’s a very gradual, realistic, and natural way for their relationship to grow which suits the tone of the show well. I suppose the word I’m looking for is “sweet.” It’s pleasant to read. I’m looking forward to whether the anime will be able to capture that same feeling. If you’re into romance, it looks like you’ll definitely have to watch out for this one from what few chapters of the manga I’ve read so far. Aaaannddd I just ended up reading this for another 40 minutes. It’s weirdly enjoyable.

No Game No Life

No Game No Life

LET THE MIND GAMES BEGIN.

I’M. HYPED. FOR. NO. GAME. NO. LIFE. HELL YES. There’s one thing I absolutely love more than most other things in whatever entertainment medium and that is the mind games. Whether it be Kaiji or Death Note, there’s nothing more thrilling than seeing how the characters will use their wit to outsmart their foes and emerge victorious. There’s also nothing quite like trying to solve a situation with the characters and then seeing the mistakes in my guesses and how well thought out the story is. Although the translated portions of the manga are by no means far enough for me to tell if this will be the case for No Game No Life, I am undoubtedly getting a strong vibe from it. Even the setting itself suits this type of show well as everything is wagered by playing games. Yes. Everything. ALL DEM BOOBS CAN BE YOURS IF YOUR BRAIN CAN BACK IT UP. Will this series be able to deliver some mind-blowing mind games? Will the writer be able to create some intricate scenarios that’s actually extremely logical and well thought out? I’m definitely going to have to see how this plays out.

Tier 1 (Extremely Anticipated)

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders

WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA!!! Thankfully, I did end up watching the first season to see what the hype was about and what a journey that was! It was bombastic, fun, intentionally melodramatic in a way that was hilarious, and ultimately an awesomely manly adventure full of testosterone ready to escalate to a new level of manliness with every passing episode. Stardust Crusaders is apparently the most recognized part of the entire series so I have a lot to look forward to here. Even more startling is the fact that the main protagonist this time around appears to be even better than the ones in the previous. Some people may be turned off by the art style, but if you’re looking for a manly adventure full of mind-blowing testosterone, then you should watch the first season. Give it until the second arc and see how you like it as that’s when it really starts to get rolling. The over the top nature and the manly poses may not be your thing, but I certainly had a blast and I’m almost certain I’ll be having a blast this season as well. IT’S ALREADY OUT TOO. GOD I’M SLOW. LET THE “WRRRRRRYYYYYYYY” commence!

MAHOUKA KOUKOU NO RETTOUSEI (MAHOUKA NO GARY STU MARY SUE WINCEST GOODNESS)

MAHOUKA NO WINCEST GARY STU MARY SUE GOODNESS.

ARE YOU LIVING THE WINCEST?
PROBABLY NOT OR ELSE YOU WOULDN’T FEEL SO JELLY FOR TATSUYA STU.

THE REAL AYASE AND KYOUSUKE WINCEST, ANYONE?!
THAT’S RIGHT. THAT’S HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE.
OREIMO’S INCEST CAN SUCK THE WINCEST.
WINCEST2STRONG4OREIMO&U&ME.

AAAAAAAAAAAARREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOUUUUUUUUUUUU REAAAAAAAAAAADYYYYYYYYY FOR THE WINCEST?! BECAUSE MY BODY SURE ISN’T READY YET. MADHOUSE ANIMATIONS?! PERFECT VOICE ACTORS FOR THEIR WINCEST ROLES?! IWASAKI TAKU FOR THE SOUNDTRACK GOODNESS? AS IF I WASN’T HYPED ENOUGH ALREADY. Okay, I’ll stop the all caps now. You probably think I’m joking or something about this series. Well, I am and I’m not. I honestly enjoyed reading the manga and parts of the light novel though I didn’t go far in the light novel because the Engrish was just very difficult to read without making me sigh. There’s something about these overpowered characters that is just enjoyable to see. It’s absurd, and it’s the epitome of the Gary Stu and Mary Sue tropes, but it’s still entertaining. Though, the info dumps have me worried as it could butcher the pacing. Fear not. Look at the shiny preview and shut up. And this one. And this one. And this one. K. Are you seeing the WINCEST? Are you seeing the GARY STU MARY SUE GOODNESS? Good. You’re properly hyped now. Thankfully it’s getting a proper 2-cour adaptation with Madhouse animations. Phew. That’s good. I won’t have the WINCEST any other way.

Mushishi Zoku Shou

Mushishi Zoku Shou

It’s finally here.
The first episode is glorious as expected.

You should be fucking hyped just reading the name of this anime. If you’re not then you need to go see the first season because it’s great. It’s incredibly atmospheric and unique. You won’t find much else like it. It’s been almost a decade since the first season was released and you can imagine how people felt when this was announced. And this is just the beginning. Guess what? There will be another season airing in fall. It doesn’t get any better than that for an episodic series like this. We’ll be able to see Ginko travel across the lands again studying Mushi ever so gently touching upon various themes with the calm and steady pacing that I have come to love from this anime. What’s also fantastic about this series is that even though it touches upon various deeper themes, it’s as far from being pretentious as it can get which is quite rare since the deeper a show tries to get, the more pretentious it tends to become. What can I say? This isn’t my most anticipated show of this season for nothing. If the first season is an indicator of what this new season will deliver, then I can certainly expect an experience like none other of this season and perhaps even of this entire year. The first episode’s already up. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! GET TO IT. I just watched it, and the ATMOSPHERE IS BACK AGAIN. Holy crap. It really does feel like the first season. Damn…

I’ll be honest. If you didn’t watch Mushishi or Jojo, then this season may even seem a bit weak to you since spring tends to be one of those seasons jam packed with content. Still, with shows like Sidonia no Kishi, Kenzen Robo Daimidaler, Mekaku City Actors, M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane, Isshukan Friends, Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii holding great promise, this season may turn out to be a fantastic one as the potential is quite absurd on the whole. Out of all the shows, the two I think are least likely to flop have to be Jojo and Mushishi, but they’ve already had previous seasons to establish themselves so I’m cheating when I say that. I’m going to do something a bit differently this season. The list so far contains what I anticipate, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I think they’ll be good or great shows by the end. It just indicates how excited I am for each of the shows. There is a correlation of course. Let’s make things interesting and try to guess which shows will end up not being that great and which shows will end up thriving. I’m obviously not going to target every single one as I may be instinctively too uncertain to pick a side and some others are a bit too obvious like Jojo and Mushishi. Keep in mind that these are mindlessly fun guesses more than anything else. Don’t take it too seriously.

WIN:
MAHOUKA NO WINCEST
No Game No Life
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
Kenzen Robo Daimidaler
Mekaku City Actors
Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?
Escha & Logy no Atelier: Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi

Blade and Soul (HOW AMBITIOUS OF ME)

NOT-SO-WIN:
Captain Earth
M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane
Gokukoku no Brynhildr
Akuma no Riddle
Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin
Selector Infected WIXOSS
Seikoku no Dragonar

I sure hope I won’t be biased doing my reviews of these now that I made this list. Oh God. It doesn’t mean I think that the “NOT-SO-WIN” category is going to completely flop. It just means that they’ll be average at best and quite lacking or disappointing. The “WIN” category means that I think the show is going to be good or a nice surprise. I’m probably just going to end up being wrong for all of them so you can just swap my categories and you’ll have a road map to the future. We’ll see how this goes for a few seasons. It should be interesting reflecting upon this list when the season does end. Hopefully you enjoyed reading this preview and feel free to tell me what you feel about this season. If you want, you can give your own “WIN” and “NOT-SO-WIN” list. WHO HAS THE STRONGEST INSTINCTS? WHO HAS THE PROPHETIC POWERS OF ERU ERUFU? FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z. Waitwa-

MAHOUKA KOUKOU NO RETTOUSEI. AWWWW YEAHHH. This season is going to be great, except for the fact the Crunchyroll doesn’t seem to like Australia very much with rights to this show.

      DIS WINCEST TOO GUD.

  • MACHA

I’m just gonna go right ahead and say my WIN LIST is JOJO and MUSHISHI.
However, I’ll be only watching JOJO this season (and finishing stuff from winter) for now. I saw MUSHISHI dubbed. And that’s what I need again. The dub was well done, so that’s what I’ll be waiting for.
That being said, OHMA KJFHVDZFNVETZDGHBKSEGBN ANOTHER SEASON IN FALL?!?!?!!?!?!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!! :D HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE TO THE POWER OF HYPE.
Well, I’ll be rewatching the first season while I wait for dub :)

Now for some TESTOSTERONE!!!!! MANLY POSES!! BRING IT OOONNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MUSHISHI AND JOJO.

  • Lim Cheng Yi

    What about kindaichi, goddammit!!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      Didn’t watch the previous seasons.

      • Lim Cheng Yi

no worries about that, kindaichi work through a series of arc, around 3-4/6 episode per case, so even if u didnt watch the previous season, it’s fine and i cant fault you on that esp when the previous season was 100+ episodes in total and if i remember, it was pretty old as well, somewhere close to 1997 to 2000.

  • Dycize

So many mechas! And all kinds!
Captain Earth is done by the Stardriver people? AW YEAH
There will also be grimdark mechas and oppai mechas. Aw yeaaaah. This season will be fulfilling.
Also I’ve read Gokuhaku no Brynhildr and I quite like it, yes, there is blood, but it’s less gratuitous and in your face than Elfen Lied. Also the MC is pretty cool.

And new JoJo yeaaaah! I hope it’ll work well enough (it better) so that we may get ALL THE JOJOS animated.
This season’s looking pretty fine I’d say.

On a side note, did you check out Kamen Rider Gaim in the end?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Sorry man, I didn’t. I really didn’t have that much time. :/ I skipped out on my regular anime watching to do some other things like the top 10.

      • Dycize

Ah, good ol’ not having the time, I understand that (I also built up a new backlog myself…).

I just check out Captain Earth’s 1st episode, and it looks like it’s gonna be kind of old school, in a “earth vs space” way with a main robot that’s white and red and blue (it’s missing the dash of yellow then it would’ve gone full blown old school). Best combination sequence in a while too!
Also “libido” has already been mentionned. Yup, makers of Stardriver alright.

  • niknasr

Yes, for wincest, although from what I heard of it’s totally one-sided from brocon, though.. For Hitsugi no Chaika, No Game No Life and Black Bullet, yes they have interesting premises and look different from any other fellow LN’s so that’s +1 for me.. Sadly, I never watch Mushishi and Jojo before, so I will skip them.. Overall, nice preview, although just one complain, I DON’T SEE DAL..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

You should give Mushishi a shot when you have the chance, and thanks!

      • niknasr

Yeah, I will.. Heard a lot of good things about it recently, and I just cannot ignore it, can I? And after watching 3 shows (Seikoku no Dragonar, Blade n Soul, Bokura wa minna kawaisou), I can safely say, (although without any groundbreaking opening ep) this is better than winter season..

p/s: Although it still spring, I can feel the hype for FSN dwell inside me..

I’d say that Date a Live 2 would again be rather variable. The stronger episodes would probably be clustered towards the end, while the earlier episodes would tend to be weaker. That being said, DaL 1’s final capture arc is no fluke – the captures do get harder and harder, the worldbuilding will become more fleshed-out, and the AST as (rather boring, nuisance level antagonist) would be replaced by a much more dangerous set of Antagonists – the trailer is hinting this in spades.

Then again, escalating Antagonists are par for course in Shounen action Mangas – and DaL is partly a harem parody crossed with some Shounen inspired elements. (I suspect the reason why Kurumi is so popular, is because she doesn’t normally belong in a harem show, and DaL is also more than just straightforward by the numbers Harem Parody especially with the later volumes). The two capture targets this season are partly parodies of two composite Harem archtypes – Twins with sibling rivalry, and a Lesbian Idol with a serious case of Misandry.

My impression of DaL from looking at LN translations is that it’s quite like Hagani in that the LN get’s more interesting over time (or even TGWOK for that matter), in the later volumes, and the author actually improves.

Of course, we could get another Infinite Stratos 2 trainwreck, with every interesting element and plot development in the LNs butchered, the worldbuilding screwed over, and the Antagonists reduced to a joke.

I have pretty low expectations for Date A Live so who knows? Maybe it’ll surprise me. We’ll have to see though.

No particular choice yet, but will keep an eye open as the shows start. Am still following Nobunaga the Fool though.
Interestingly, Nobunaga’s character designer, Yone Kazuki, also designed the characters for an upcoming otome anime, Kamigami no Asobi.
Devil’s Riddle: I hear there’s only 1 volume of the source manga available AND the source is still ongoing. I wonder how they intend to pull this show off. BTW, Devil’s art is done by Yun Koga, who also did the very bishonen designs of Gundam 00’s male characters.
WIXOSS: Wakeshima Kanon’s doing the OP, and Okada Mari’s writing the story. If you liked Kanon’s song for STB, and Mari’s work on Nagi, maybe it could interest you. How did you find STB overall, anyway?
Kawaisou: Kawaisou’s creator, Miyahara Ruri, also created the Love Lab gag manga. I hear it got a well received anime last year, so I guess her source material for Kawaisou could have some potential to be translated into anime.

I’ve stopped watching Nobunaga the Fool. Is that show going well? Is it crazy and nonsensical or are they actually making a really coherent and solid story?

      • zztop

The show’s still rather crazy, but some coherence is starting to take shape.
Which episode did you stop at? Because I’ve mostly been following the show to see how they use Tarot themes for each episode.

  • MgMaster

    I didn’t watch Mushishi or Jojo…

Still, even though there’s nothing I’m REALLY looking forward to based on PVs or synopsis reading alone, the excitement when a new season start’s is still there, even if I end up dropping half of what I watch like I usually do :D

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha, my backlog is gigantic. And yep, you’ll probably end up dropping a ton of shows as usual. Such is the usual way of things, but it’s nice to see a fresh wave of anime.

    • Simona

Why not Jojo? It’s REALLY entertaining lol

  • The Atomic Dwarf

JoJo’s Persona Adventure is good. It still has the winning recipe of the first season despite a weaker beginning.

Mahouka no Wincest! Now that’s something to watch. I know it’s not supposed to be a comedy, but I was laughing my socks off though the whole episode.

Bokura Wa Minna Kawaisou is a generic slice of life RomCom. I could see why you’re not that interested in it, but still it deserves a spot on the watchlist of people who want to relax after the epicness of JoJo and Mushishi s2.

Still waiting for the other shows to air.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha, they actually showed the nuclear bomb attack so early. It’s pretty awesome and hilarious.

  • EvilNemesis

    Shows I’ll be watching…

    Mushishi

    Wincest no Gary Stu

Jojo I wear my belts at night

    No Condom Life Incestious Game

    Soredemo no Shota

Byrnhildr ( Studio ARMS… make me proud with that top quality gore )
    Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

I might also skim Robo or wait for your screenshots like I did with DxD ;D .

Sidonia no Kishi is a wild factor… the CGI might be tolerable or it might just slowly drain my souls faster than Nihei’s manga art can ( almost unfathomable lol ).

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Probably won’t do reviews of Kenzen Robo Daimidaler too often if at all so don’t expect much from that. Life’s been pretty busy.

      • EvilNemesis

You mean I’ll actually have to watch stuff to watch it… Talk about a drag here! xD

  • http://thehugeanimefan.blogspot.com/ Cassandra @The Huge Anime Fan

Of all you highlighted mostly interested in No Game, No Life, Black Bullet, and Date A Live 2.
Wondering how absurd Date A Live 2 will get this time around. Although did enjoy it mostly. BTW: I just finished the first ep. of Gokukoku no Brynhildr and must say so far not bad at all.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’ll check out the first episode of Gokukoku no Brynhildr soon enough.

      • http://thehugeanimefan.blogspot.com/ Cassandra @The Huge Anime Fan

Yay! I bet you’ll like it.

  • James Du

I have a strong urge to knee Miyuki’s VA in the crotch. Mayumi’s VA, on the other hand… mmm

Cpt. Earth & Gokukoku have had good first episodes. Blade and Soul’s first episode is a -2/10 so far.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      Bro. You okay?

IT WAS AN AMBITIOUS GUESS for Blade and Soul. Oh well. I tried.

      • James Du

Mayumi’s VA (Kana Hanazawa) just has to open her mouth and everything feels better already.

  • Ian Anthony

Wincest here I come! Sono chi no sadame mode all over again.

I just feel stupid for just watching and finishing Mushi-shi yesterday, that I didn’t watch this epic anime earlier.

Ayano shall conquer all. Mekaku *head tilt*

  • Akizaki Ranho

As someone who is put off by historical anime and someone who didn’t give Nobunaga the Fool a chance I saw Dai Shogun’s first episode just now and it is pretty AWESOME! Pretty darn hilarious too. So many shows I wasn’t going to give a chance being pretty good.

  • FiveOVER

    Mekaku City Actors:

Ryuujago is actually pretty darn good at the moment.
