“Legend of the Verdurous Planet”
“Midori no Hoshi no Densetsu”

While this ending is far from fantastic, with what Urobuchi had on his hands, he has certainly made the most of it. Through the ups and downs, it looks like Suisei no Gargantia manages to end on a high note instead of maintaining the low from the previous episodes. What do we have to thank in this episode? Chamber’s badassery.

Suisei no Gargantia Episode 13 (FINALE) Impressions

Striker trying to be god

Wow. Now that’s delusional.

Chamber #1.

Ledo family shame

Striker trying to be cool

Crazy thing calling other things crazy.

While Ledo is just sitting there amazed, Chamber delivers some swift lines basically saying that Striker is straying from being a Pilot Support System due to Kugel’s previous decisions that were wrong. Because they were wrong and Striker follows them, it’ll come to the same conclusion over and over again with no way to get out. Interestingly enough, it seems more like a family member who betrays the family against one who holds firm. The verbal exchange, at least on Chamber’s side, makes it more human than his appearances would connote.

Flange persistent

Gargantia pinion anime hair

Keep your hair, Pinion. It’s a lot better.

So now you realize.

Striker mech against Ledo

Ledo neuroplus power up

GG. It’s trans-am time.

Pinion’s new hairstyle is certainly better than the last one. But otherwise, there isn’t really that much to talk about for him so let’s move on to Ledo and the apparent character development. Seeing Striker empty and understanding that he’s been following an empty shell the whole time reminds him of his time in the Galactic Alliance. He likens the two parts of his life and realizes that he’s been making a huge mistake just believing and not thinking for himself. The problem I have with the character development here is that the previous episodes on Gargantia aren’t even pivotal to it. The only flashbacks he’s had are when he was in the Galactic Alliance and it makes me think that if Ledo just saw the empty Striker, it would have been enough for him to feel the way he does here. However, that’s still just a part of it.

Heaven's ladder cannon

Heaven’s Ladder? Are those birds at the top? I feel sorry for them :(

Dr. Ordum

Orbital mass driver system gargantia

Ohhhhh yeaaaaah.

Whoa that’s close.

That’s a pretty awesome way to implement anti-shockwave.

Now some people will call this Deus ex Machina, but it’s more of Chekhov’s gun than that. Sure enough, when the key was shown, it was just the key shown and nothing else. The cannon has also been shown several times as well so it’s not an ass-pull. It’s pretty badass nonetheless and who doesn’t love some explosions? Anyways, Ledo may want to sacrifice himself, but now is the time that his stay on Gargantia actually matters. Amy wants him to just be with them and be who he is on Gargantia, a normal human being not bound to the life of a soldier forever. Well, that and because she likes him.

WHOA. That actually surprised me.

Hot anime girls suisei

That’s hot too.

TOO MUCH RACKAGE FOR ME. No but seriously that “Amore” really startled me. Now she and Pinion has something going on. But it’s nice to see some more Machine Caliber pew pew action. Regardless of what some say, I actually like the mecha action. It’s not super flashy, but it’s well done and the fast moving nature of the combat is quite pleasant to watch. But here is the real awesomeness that is Chamber.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

Chamber detaches himself

The soundtrack… the feels. What an awesome A.I.

Chamber vs Striker

Sayonara. Best character in this anime.

Gargantia Ledo shocked

CHAMBERRRRRR!!!! Man, that’s the most awesome A.I. ever. It’s more human than machine. What makes this scene so great is that a machine like Chamber has evolved as well being on this planet and became capable of sharing human values as well. The last words of Chamber just makes me think that way even more with how un-machinelike it is and how awesome it is. People say a dog is a man’s best friend, but that’s only because they don’t have a Pilot Support Interface System like Chamber. About Ledo, it’s clear that he wants to experience and live properly now that he’s had a taste of what it’s all about. Still, most of whatever Ledo is feeling is just overshadowed by Chamber’s human-like sacrifice that actually made me feel something.

AmyxLedo. Yep.

Chamber death finale

Bye bye.

What a happy ending. The last few minutes do a decent job of rounding everything up and making it so Ledo really does have a place to stay. Now, it’s clear that he belongs on Gargantia. Even the relationship between the Whalesquids end on a positive note as well with advancements that may make communication possible. There’s nothing that really ends on a sad note aside from Chamber’s demise. Even that is brightened because of the Whalesquids giving birth to new ones on his tin can body. It’s a nice change of pace from Urobuchi’s usually dark endings.

Suisei no Gargantia Episode 13 (FINALE) Review

Overall, this is still a solid ending. It’s rushed, but we have to take into consideration what has happened before the finale to credit it properly. Beforehand, things are… pretty messy to say the least. Missed opportunities for character development, plot points here and there that didn’t have the proper amount of impact, one-offs that took away from Ledo’s development, Amy’s complete lack of development, and so on. When considering that a lot of these points are influencing the story for the finale, this episode does a fine job of concluding everything. We get some decent action, and most importantly, we do get a wonderful Chamber sacrifice.
(Chamber is definitely #1)

Sure, the character development is somewhat there, but at this point, it’s not going to be as well crafted as it could be because it’s the finale. The finale is supposed highlight the product of the character developments and not be something that creates it. Of course, there are exceptions, but this is not one of them. What Suisei no Gargantia had left going is to end everything conclusively with some impact perhaps emotionally. The former is done well, and while the episode will not make me feel a great deal of emotion, the Chamber farewell is certainly marvelous and hopeful which reflects the ending tone of the ending well. If the previous episodes were better, then there would have had more opportunity for this one to shine. It’s too bad that the anime didn’t live up to my expectations, but at least Urobuchi managed to salvage what was left quite nicely.

Initially, I thought this would be AOTS, maybe even AOTY.

    Not even close.

    666/100 > Gargantia.

    • Entrav

Yep, same here. I thought Suisei no Gargantia would be much better than this.

To be fair though, 666/10 > Everything. So… this anime didn’t have a chance to begin with.

      • James Du

I definitely enjoyed VVV the most, but both Dansai Bunri and Hatakaru Maou-sama did well too. I wouldn’t say it’s a completely uncontested victory for Valvrave.

  • Rebmahc

“People say a dog is a man’s best friend, but that’s only because they don’t have a Pilot Support Interface System like Chamber.”

Overall I enjoyed this series, but it’s not as great as I expected it to be.
I heard that there will be 14th episode in the bluray. I wonder what kind of story it will be.

    • Entrav

Yep, I feel the same. Probably either a continuation of Ledo’s story now or maybe… we could get some nice backstory about the Evolvers and the Galactic Alliance?? That would be really nice.

  • Psychopatito

Yep, I was afraid we would have to wait for the OVA, scheduled to be released on Aug 28, for the ending. Overall, I liked it a lot. With most American Sci Fi programs dropping the ball, this was nicely done. Still, not near as great as Valvrave, but pretty decent. I’m just hoping someone can come up with a new shell for awesome Chamber, maybe Ledo can find the hard disk that hosts his awesomeness now that he’s diving. That would be some salvage. (Maybe, someone can do a cross over so Chamber can kick the ass of the vampiric girl in the Valvrave hard disk) And again, thanks for this awesome reviews! Overuse of the word ‘awesome’, I know, but what else can I say?

    • Entrav

LOOOL. Chamber vs VVV girl. That would be great. What would be better is if Chamber became a Valvrave. OHHHHHH MAN. That would be something.

Hopefully the OVA is interesting. I’m hoping for some more stories about what happened in the past like the struggle between the Evolvers and the Galactic Alliance and also how they managed to keep the Earth alive.

Thanks a lot for reading my reviews and commenting! :) I’m really glad that someone finds my review “awesome.” You don’t really have to use another word; I’m very happy with that already.

  • zombienuat774

I didnt notice the whalesquid babies on chambers body thanks for pointing it out lol even ledo gets his own annoying squirrel

    • Entrav

      No problem.

Hey hey, that squirrel is pretty cool. Not nearly as cool as Chamber. Hell no. But it’s still pretty cool.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

Well this is an interesting cafe

Now back to the episode. Honestly Chamber got more character development in this show than most of the cast with the exception or Ledo. And it was nice and sad at the same time to see him stand up for his pilot until the very last moment. May he rust in peace.

As for Gargantia well… A fleet like that has to have some sort of secret so it was no surprise when they decided to use a big ass Yamato Cannon to take out the baddies. I mean even the principle is the same. They built the fleet around the weapon. Kinda risky if you ask me.

The ending could’ve been better and honestly I wonder what they could’ve done with this show if it had a bigger budget and a full 25 episode season. But you’re right they could’ve done worse so all in all it was a decent ending.

As for the OVA. I hope they show Ledo’s life in the Alliance with him and his brother. That would be a very touching moment.

    • Entrav

Holy crap that’s an awesome cafe. Wow I would go there just because. It must be fairly costly though just like those maid cafes.

Yes, if they had 25 episodes instead of 13, this anime would have been much more fleshed out with some real growth. Urobuchi does a fine job nonetheless which makes me think that he should have been in charge in more of the writing. Oh well, waiting for his other series.

Yeah, that would be awesome too. I don’t really want to see life on Gargantia because there are other things left to be explored. I hope they do something with the Galactic Alliance.

  • Teo

Is it confirmed that an ova will be released?

  • Dycize

Ah, that was a nice conlusion. And so many people here hoped for an Urobutchi murder fest (can’t blame them though).

I didn’t comment last episode, but I mentionned before that I feared Gargantia would have pulled an Angel Beats on us, ie, things going way too fast at the end. It did go very fast, with various plot points feeling left out… But contrary to AB, Gargantia’s final episode brings a good conclusion.

All the characters make relevant apparitions, things get tied together in one solid knot and the serie ends on a happy note.

Chamber’s sacrifice was really awesome. Its character is incredibly developped, for a machine! It knows more about being human than some humans, and eventually makes its own decision as Ledo finally lets out his emotions, what he wants. And Chamber’s conclusion is that Ledo no longer requires his support. “Kutabare, buriki yarou!” indeed. Simply a fantastic scene.

And now for some trivia : some of the characters who appear during the archaelogy class scene are actually characters designed by artists on pixiv who got picked during a contest. Must be nice to see your character appear in such a nice ending.

    • Entrav

Urobuchi and the others did warn us it was going to be more about the positive aspects than the negative in this anime.

Chamber is definitely my favourite character in this anime. SugitaBot is such a badass.

That’s awesome how the characters appeared in the ending. Good information.

  • Irenesharda

Well, we have finally come to the end of Gargantia.

This episode was good, and while not having the really epic ending that I wanted, still was good in its own way. Interestingly, after all that supposed development for Red, this was really Chamber’s episode. He’s the star and has the best line in the entire series! LOL

His logic battle with Striker was really good, and the battle between the was excellent. The way he and Red began to think for themselves and how Chamber sacrificed himself for Red’s future, he is truly the best robotic, A.I. onii-chan you could ask for!

Gargantia’s fight itself was pretty underwhelming. After all that buildup, it turns out that “Heaven’s Ladder” is simply an overpowered cannon. Big deal… The fight didn’t take much since the cult people weren’t really fighting back in the first place.

Indeed, most of my interest comes from the aerial battle and that in and of itself was glorious. Chamber telling Red that’s he’s no longer a soldier is very symbolic and powerful in hindsight of seeing though his journey of the series.

It was nice to see that Garganita has begun joining forces with other fleets and is pushing to advance themselves now. The have begun to teach the knowledge that once only Bevel and Dr. Oldham wanted to know. I’m glad Red’s happy.

We leave the stars and it’s eternal war to the GA and the space Hideauze. And the Earth, who it seems it was the inhabitants left behind who fixed if from its iceball status, to those inhabitants’ descendants.

All in all, this was a good series, not great, but good. It had a lot of good potential, but it seemed to not quite know what to do with it all. The series ended up becoming a bit of a mish-mash of half-finished ideas and in the end only ended up being half as good as it could have been.

I give this episode an 8/10, and the series a 7.5/10.

Rest in Peace, Chamber, and farewell Gargantia…

    • Irenesharda

I’m serious, “Go to hell, you tin can!” is THE best line in this series. Right up there with, “Make my day.”, “Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker.”, and “Get away from her, you bitch!”

      • James Du

No matter how awesome it was, it felt very OOC for Chamber.

        • Entrav

Well, I can’t argue with that. But hey, he’s imitating others so it’s not THAT out of character. It’s strange, but it might as well go out with a bang.

      • Flaiboy

In all honesty, I was thinking . . .”this is about the time that Spock would say, ‘Go to hell.'” *yawn*

        • Irenesharda

Hmm, Spock saying that would be just as awesome! :D

  • Flaiboy

    Just a few thoughts:

I thought it was cool to think that in the same way that Striker was affected by his pilot so was Chamber. He was able to sacrifice himself because that was something which was in the mind and character of Ledo; his ability to grow in that way was all due to being interfaced with Ledo and being slowly changed over time by Ledo’s decisions and actions.

From where did those squirrels suddenly appear?

Just a little TOO happy of an ending for me, but oh well. Kinda wanted to see Pinion get taken out with Rackage by Striker.

    • Entrav

Squirrels appearing all over the place! They’ll never replace Chamber though.

But yeah, I definitely found that interesting as well. I guess they both rely on each other to function properly. Besides, Chamber was disconnected from the Galactic Alliance so I’m sure that it’s even more influenced by Ledo’s actions.

Haha, no one really died in the end. I personally don’t mind as Urobuchi isn’t really responsible for a lot of the anime, and the fact that they warned us that it wasn’t going to be dark.

  • Citsim

I liked the ending, especially since all my fears were proven wrong. There was character development (almost all of it for Chamber, but man, what an AI! It’s so nice to have a heroic AI for once), the key was for a Chekhov’s Gun (literally, as you’ve pointed out) instead of a Deus Ex Machina, and it didn’t end with the usual luddite overtones (“technology is bad, there are things man was not meant to know”), but with hope (“ok, we lost the coolest mecha in the world, but forget silly superstitions, there are still tons of technology and records down there, just this time we won’t kill as many squids”).

All in all, despite glaring flaws, Gargantia as a whole has been far more coherent and consistent than Valvrave. It’s just that Valvrave’s final episode was amazing!
