A small review and plenty of fanservice.

Calm Day

Unlike the serious and thought-provoking episode last week, this episode steers itself in the other direction and provides some mindless fanservice. Let’s just say that it doesn’t make writing about it any easier. So, I’ll be doing a review of what I think about this series so far.

Suisei no Gargantia Midway Review

Well, it’s not like I could begin to analyze what’s happening as nothing is really happening. On Gargantia, it’s a calm day and Ledo is trying to do some job-hunting. I guess I can comment on what I think about Suisei no Gargantia for the five episodes that it has delivered so far as there’s nothing much to talk about this episode. Remember, this is not really an Urobuchi anime as he’s only responsible for writing the first and last episodes. Since he’s not responsible for a lot of the anime, don’t expect the usual events in his other anime to happen in Suisei no Gargantia.

I’m sure it will.

First off, I have to say that the anime has kept me guessing each episode as what’s about to happen is still unclear. Ledo is still stuck on Earth and there’s little chance of him going back to space any time soon. In fact, if he does go back in space, all the character build-up and so on will have to be used to create some sort of impact or else these episodes will be essentially wasted and everything will be reset back to the first episode. Therefore, I think we’re just going to see Ledo change as a character throughout the season unless if there is going to be a season 2, but still, we never know what Urobuchi has written for the last episode and it may be quite a surprise.

I’m actually quite surprised with how everything turned out. Contrasting the first episode, the rest of the series is a lot calmer and deals with a single character rather than the bigger picture. At first, I didn’t really know if it would work out that well, but because of episode 4 and parts of the other episodes, I became more open to the idea of Ledo staying on Earth for the rest of the season. It’s just that, there needs to be more episodes like episode 4 and not this one. A fanservice episode is nice and all, but there are only 12 episodes for this anime with plenty of unexplored potential.

Gargantia Ledo

While I wouldn’t say the characters are great, Ledo’s clueless perspective about life on Gargantia lends itself well to the idea of adapting to a new way of life and a new way of thinking. As he discovers more human ideals, he discovers more about himself, and I suppose that the audience is supposed to be exposed to the various ideas that the anime is trying to throw out there. It may be about life, it may be about whether being “useful” really matters or not, it may be about thinking about a situation from a different viewpoint, and so on. Suisei no Gargantia isn’t changing my perspective on life or anything like that just yet, but maybe by the end, I’ll realize a few things that I hadn’t noticed before.

That’s quite the breather episode, pretty funny too! …Though there isn’t much else to say. Ledo wants to be useful, but it’s quite clear that being a soldier for his whole life doesn’t help him during peaceful times.
…And there really isn’t much to say about this episode. It’s good for what it is, but nothing really happened. Hopefully, next episode(s) will have more content.

Man, those guys chasing after Ledo… that must be a terrible feeling.

Well, looks like he’ll have to change his attitude if he wants to fit in. I do hope that there will be more substance in the future episodes like you.
