Will the moe blobs prevail?
Tamako Market Episode 1: “That Girl is the Cute Daughter of a Mochi Shop Owner”
“Ano Ko wa Kawaii Mochiya no Musume”
After a great run with Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai, KyoAni is back once more with an original called Tamako Market. While KyoAni makes moe blobs bearable, will this next anime captivate the audience with its story and plot or will it fail?
IT’S A TRAP!
So, we start off with some moe blobs talking about mochi. Okay, I’m just going to get this out of the way right now. This episode made me damn hungry. Seriously, food in anime almost always looks more delectable than it does in real life. Anyways, that aside, Tamako, the main character, begins her journey into a flower shop and WHAT. ONO DAISUKE??!?! The florist princess, Kaoru Hanase, is voiced by Ono Daisuke. He does a damn good job of making this a trap though. Oh how Yatogami Kuroh has risen through the ages…
A sneeze is a mating ritual? Mating ritual with what? A talking bird? What seems to be a normal slice of life turned just a bit more interesting with this extra talking bird. It’s definitely a nice way to spice things up a bit in this overused genre. His name is… Dera Mochiyucky! He sure hit the jackpot since it’s in a mochi shop. This being a slice of life already makes me think that there might be some deeper reason for Dera being here. Also, while the comedy is decent, the bird and it’s pretentiousness certainly creates an interesting atmosphere.
Just as I say that, he begins to fascinate me even more with his fascination with Tamako. Will he fall in love? Will this be another tragic story of Romeo and Juliet? In all seriousness, I’m surprised that no one asked it questions about where it came from and what royal family he’s talking about. Still, he knows what humans are so it’s not like its from a completely different world.
KyoAni always seems to be able to pull something out at the last minute to keep our attention. Indeed, Dera projecting a random message like a projector helped keep my interest in this anime. It seems that he has to find the perfect mate for his prince and the person waving must be either its prince or someone close to it. So he has to return to his island once he finds a mate and his island is populated by humans. I thought at first that it would be a bird kingdom of some sort.
Tamako Market First Impressions (Episode 1) Review
Although I’m not overly eager to watch the next episode, I definitely do not dislike this anime. The moe is not intrusive and the bird, as well as Ono Daisuke, keeps me waiting for the next episode. Dera will no doubt play a big role but for now, we’ve only got a hint of the story. Overall, a decent episode but nothing superb to note. Let’s hope that the next episode will walk a step further in terms of plot and story.
