I… I just… I… I seriously don’t even know what to say. I guess I’ll start with my wrong expectations of this episode. Last week, Irenesharda brought us some screencaps of the preview for this episode. Now I understand that Valvrave is never really like what it seems in the preview, but HOLY FUCKING SHIT SERIOUSLY I DIDN’T EVEN THINK SUNRISE WOULD HAVE THE BALLS TO DO THIS SHIT. I went into this expecting some more ridiculous Shoko win with the elections or something. Well, it did happen, but what happens during that is just… fucking insane.

Valvrave the Liberator Episode 10 Impressions

Right. Runes

Valvrave VVV-chan-tan

Why is she so damn horny?

L-Elf not convinced

He already knows what’s going to happen. ERU ERUUUFUUUUU WHYYYYY UUUUU NOOOO STOOOOPPPPPPPP

Valvrave blonde girl

Right, so I guess I’ll start calmly and follow through like I normally do. But forgive me if I rush because the end part is just… Yeah, let’s just talk about these “runes.” So apparently, when you break down information far enough, these information particles called runes appear. It’s beyond me how they even break down information down to that level and we can basically attribute whatever the teacher is saying to be nothing more than technobabble. Nonetheless, I’m guessing by analyzing and changing these runes, they are capable of creating the VVV-AI (The blonde girl in Haruto’s Valvrave), and it may make technological advancement easier. But at this point, everything is speculation.

Don’t tell me Saki is…

Oh don't worry. You'll get what you want.

Oh don’t worry. You’ll get what you want.

ARUS president

WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THE WHOLE TIME ARUS?!?!

Yay! A team! Of course, Saki’s still sulking about how her private time with Haruto is disturbed by 2 more male characters. Ah, but who would know that in just a small amount of time she will be embracing him in some sexu- Anyways, she’s been so bipolar I’m not really sure where she stands. She kissed him before, she disregards him before, she is all this and that, but we’re never clear on how she truly feels. Well, we’ll get some clarification in a fucking shocking way really, really soon.

Shoko finds game

#1

Renbokouji Akira blushing

Haruto, move aside.

Man, Shoko is just so cheerful, happy, and just being herself while the guys all go horny it out. But we all know who is going to get all the action. We all know that Yamada and Kyuuma are going to be all jelly. I just can’t wait to see the reaction on those other people’s faces only when there are pictures of Saki and Haruto together and they’re already throwing a fit.

Nanami Rion announcement

Sashinami Shoko thinking about running for president

RUN FOR PRESIDENT!

Yamada Raizou smiling face

That’s pretty bipolar.

THANX DOOD.

LOLOLLL YOU WOULDN’T KNOW ANYWAYS.

So is the sexy time.

Nanami rion moe puff face

:OOO

Tokishima Haruto kicked

JUST LET THE GUY BITE SOMETHING.

Well… now that you mention it…

He’s not going to be happy. You’re next. Seriously.

FORESHADOWING.

Right… And so it begins…

Sashinami Shoko not a leader

NO. YOU’RE RUNNING.

Naturally, Shoko should run for President, or Prime Minister in this case, because she’s uhhh… Shoko. She’s just Shoko so she should run for it. Thunder running for it would be the end of the world, Satomi running for it would work out somewhat, but he’s too greedy with the Valvraves. Shoko is perfect for this student body. Moreover, with Haruto trying to bite just about everyone, I’m wondering why don’t they just let him bite someone so he can at least satisfy a bit of that VVV girl’s hunger? It’s like they want him to be more crazy or something, but alas, it’s all part of L-Elf’s plan.

Step 1. Stop talking to yourself.

H-Neun tea

TEA??? Damn they’re learning from L-Elf.

Nobi Marie

Oh shit.

He’s not going to pop out of the ground like you though.

Sashinami Shoko fighting alone

THAT’S WHY BEST GIRL.

Because. You’re Haruto.

Awww…

Fuck. And to think what happens later…

OH GAWD. STAHP.

Satomi Renbokouji

Just. No.

Seriously, at this point, I really don’t even care about what else there is to say about the Dorssians. All that really matters is Shoko, Haruto and Saki in this episode. With Haruto ready to jump in his Valvrave and save Shoko’s father because he loves her, I’m thinking that he should just confess. While I’m thinking that it’s ridiculously cheesy to call himself a monster, I don’t think it’s even arguable anymore that he actually is a uncontrollable monster. It just makes it that much worse for them to have a genuine relationship that’s just so close to being complete. Yep, but Sunrise really fucking loves to give us those twists. They’ll do FUCKING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.

SHOKO! SHOKO! SHOKO! SHOKO!

So motivational.

Sashinami Shoko ready to confess

Really? Fuuuuuuuuuuuu WHY YOU JUST STAND THERE ERU ERUFU? I KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN.

Wow, thank God Shoko came up and actually ran for president even though her ideas are just absolutely ridiculous. Logic? Screw that. It’s Valvrave. L-Elf is just watching in the sidelines while she makes her speech. How nice.

CAN SHE JUST STOP WITH THE IRONIC STATEMENTS???

Ok finally. Saki’s finally not kicking him in the stomach anymore and is just letting him bite her. Phew. Now he won’t be a batshit cra-

Tokishima Haruto vampire mode

RED? BLOOD? Shit wtf???

Uhh… He looks a bit different from usual. And him pouncing on her is just more than awkward. But no, they can’t be doing anything that I think they’re going to do right? Heh.. Uhhhh-

Valvrave tokishima haruto naked

Valvrave the Liberator Rukino Saki naked cellphone

She looks totally. Fucking. Broken.

………… HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT. I DID NOT EVEN KNOW SUNRISE HAD THE FUCKING BALLS TO DO THAT CRAP. Fuck. I don’t even know if it was a good thing that I didn’t get spoiled or not as there were rumors circulating about this episode. LIKE. WHAT THE FUCK? DID HARUTO JUST RAPE SAKI? RAPE? WHAT DA FAK? WHILE SHOKO IS MAKING HER SPEECH? Shoko is just making these comments that directly relate to whatever Haruto is doing to Saki. THAT JUXTAPOSITION. THAT IMAGERY WITH SAKI NAKED. God. The writers sure know how to make some things count. I wouldn’t even say it’s actually Haruto; it’s more like the VVV girl is making him do this “HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” crap.

Usually, I’d just feel amazing after watching some random Valvrave awesomeness but this episode stepped over some huge lines. This is straight up RAPE and NTR. Fuckkkkkkk. But let’s dive into it anyways because we can. So, Saki accepts Haruto right? We could say that there are two reasons why she accepts him. One is the fact that she actually likes him and her disregards for him are just because she’s bipolar. That… could be the case, but I doubt that’s the only thing influencing her decision of accepting him.

The other aspect that factors into her acceptance is that she realizes Haruto is not really the one doing this and it really is a curse so to speak. To free him of his burden, she decided to carry it as well. Of course, this factors in the fact that she still likes him to some extent to endure this. Though, you can say that Haruto is getting raped more than Saki is… God dammit. I STILL HAVE TO SAY SASUGA SUNRISE FOR THEM HAVING THE BALLS TO DO THIS.

Meanwhile, I’m sure that L-Elf knows perfectly well what’s going on. OH GOD. Wait, what would have happened if he was with a guy? HOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYY FUCK. Fuck. I actually don’t even know how I feel. It’s fucked up, it’s interesting, it’s FUCKING VALVRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Valvrave the Liberator Episode 10 Review

Look. I’m not a fan of seeing rape or any form of rape. That just doesn’t flow with me especially when it’s in something I don’t expect it to be in. I’m sure that a lot of people feel the same way. I can stand the ridiculousness. Hell, I enjoy it a lot. However, after watching this episode, I still feel more damn awkward than any other jingle bells singing or whatever. It’s just painful to watch not in the cringe-worthy way, but just because it’s FUCKING RAPE AND NTR WHAT ELSE DO I REALLY NEED TO SAY?!?!?!? LIKE HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS SHIT IS RIDICULOUS OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUUUCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!! Can’t lie about the last scene. I just feel uncomfortable about it.

Rape can be used to shape developments and characters in a much, much, much more serious story. Moreover depending on how it’s executed, it can give rise to marvelous storytelling and can truly captivate readers and make them understand the consequences, and the effects of such a horrendous event. This, however, arguably does not belong in an anime where the tone is purely ridiculous and not serious. I think that’s what makes me not like rape being added in Valvrave. It’s just not serious enough to support a serious topic.

Yet, at the same damn time, I’m going to fucking contradict myself hard here and say that I can’t help but be more intriguied than I’ve ever been about what’s going to happen next. Please, Sunrise, no babies. Seriously, none of that. I don’t want people having threads on forums just concerning what to name the fucking vampire baby. When Shoko finds out… Oh man. Just… Things are going to go down. Anyways I’m so split on this episode I don’t even know how to review it. On one hand I feel really awkward watching the rape scene, but on the other hand, the juxtaposition with the imagery is really nicely done and depending on how they do this, it could actually develop well and not just purely in the ridiculous way. This could be a huge deciding event in this anime that could make way for many, many future developments.

I don’t even care about the Dorssians having their fun time trying to find out what Cain is up to. I don’t even care about that damn election other than seeing Shoko being elected. The rape scene is all I really care about. It fucks me in the head, and all I know is that I want to see what happens next. That’s Valvrave for you. Even a week of bodily preparation did not help. Peace out, I’m going to try my best to prepare my body for the next episode, and if this one is an indicator of what’s to come, it looks like we’ll be needing more than just one whole season to prepare our bodies for the second season.

But before I go, I’m going to have to ask your opinions on the subject. I usually don’t ask for opinions as you readers supply the blog with a ton of comments already which I really appreciate, but this time, it would be nice to have a wide array of viewpoints. I want to know a lot of your opinions on this episode, and most importantly, the last scene. Should we treat it as all fun and games like we usually do or is it stepping over the line? What do you really think about the rape scene?

Oh mann, I just watched the episode. I was just like… “what?” I don’t even understand what’s going on anymore. But then again, it wouldn’t really be rape if the girl is accepting it :P

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Dude. She may accept it afterwards, but it’s still rape. Rape is rape. This anime really likes to fuck with our minds.

    • Irenesharda

She didn’t give consent. It’s rape. Period.

      • Aleris

        Haruto was unwilling too :(

        • Irenesharda

Totally agree, both of them were victims here. The only one I can think off as responsible is VVV-tan. That OS wasn’t as innocent as she looked…

Shoko X Haruto ship officially sunk. Saki X Haruto officially raise and set sail.

Fffffffffffffffffffffffff I still have hope. It’s not 100% over yet, but it’s grim. God. Why Saki of all people? Maybe this is her turning point that will make me like her more? Who knows.

      • Fay

“Why Saki of all people?” because Saki is the most popular female character. She is popular to the point in Japan that she already having her own spin-off manga. Focusing only on her and Valvrave 4.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I saw that announcement a while ago. Still, it depends on the data you’re looking at.

          http://www.crunchyroll.ca/anime-news/2013/06/01-1/japanese-poll-results-favorite-character-from-spring-2013

          That says otherwise.
Shoko with 576 votes and Saki with 341 votes

Of course, that doesn’t mean that those votes mean everything. I’m just saying that there are other sides to what you’re saying as well. After all, the manga was announced on May 25th so it’s not like she got really popular after the poll ended or something. Well, now she will swing in either direction with this episode.

    • Son Gohan

Actually from this episode I got the feeling that Saki cannot win. She had sex with Haruto in the only way possible: with Haruto being out of his mind. She realized that he will never love her the same way he loves Shoko. Her last line “Shoko’s won” is significant.
That, and if Saki wins Sunrise will give the message that “raping is okay if you then go out with the girl”, which is just plain WRONG.

    • mikhailsharon

Haruto rape Saki… How could they possibly have a normal relationship?

      TQ

  • Irenesharda

    My oh my…wow.

So Haruto has finally sated his hunger, and it wasn’t a hunger to eat, it was the hunger and the urge to reproduce. (Which is kind of strange, since until Takahi, he’s been attacking mostly males, which don’t really help in the reproducing department…)

A theory I read after watching actually made some sense. Perhaps its because she’s a female Magius?

With all the others that Haruto attacked, he didn’t try to rip their clothes off or anything, he was just trying to bite their necks. Look closely at each time, with L-11 (twice), Kyuma, and even Takahi, he is only trying to (or did) bite them.

The only one he wasn’t trying to bite, but instead assault, was Saki. It’s possible that because she’s the only female one of his kind there, that in his most ravenous vampiric state, he sought her out for reproduction, rather than food (which is how his instinctual self views everyone else)?

Well back to the plot, Haruto has now left adolescence behind and been thrust unceremoniously into adulthood, and unfortunately it was against his will. This single night will forever change his relationship between Saki and Shoko. Shoko might be his true, first love, but Saki will now always be his first woman. And Saki…I honestly don’t know what I can say. No girl should ever go through something like that…curse or no. In fact, I thought it profound when she said that they were “cursed” after all, refuting Aina’s belief that they were some kind of “holy spirit”. Having to go through a horrible experience like that, I can see why she’d have little faith in anything right now. I honestly don’t know what to make of what’s going to happen next between them all. This is truly a damning situation.

Other than that, we learn about the “runes” which involves the movement of information, We learn more about what JIOR was doing, and they are beginning to sound fishy to me. And election is held for the new prime minister of JIOR and it is no surprise that Shoko won. She has had to bear the fact that her father is most likely dead, but still she goes on. However, with her rise to power and her going to confess when she gets to the moon, she has added another death flag to her already numerous supply.

As I figured, the next two episodes will lead to the climax of the story with everything coming to a head at the moon. We discover that Cain’s fleet will be going to fight one more time and this time Cain himself is going out there. That’s not a good sign. We learn that Cain is the right-hand man of the Fuehrer who replaced the royal regime 20 years ago. However, if Princess Liselotte is still treated as royalty at the time she met L-elf which happened later than 20 years ago, then how did this whole coup d’etat occur?

Anyway, they can explain that later. We learn that H-neun is doing some suspicious acts of sneaking around, along with Kriemhild. What’s going on with them and who’s on whose side? Things are becoming very complicated at this late stage of the game for Valvrave.

We have indeed reached a precipice in this story, and we will have to see if Valvrave can soar to new heights, or will it crash and burn?

I give this episode a 8/10. What shall happen next?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m wondering if his normal vampire mode actually does anything. It could just be a byproduct of the process and may not satiate his hunger at all. Maybe he could only “do it” with a person who actually has the powers?

Saki is just broken now. I honestly don’t even know what’s going to happen between the two. I don’t even think she’s going to blackmail him or anything, but he’s probably going to have to take responsibility on his own anyways. If he doesn’t, he’s going to be a scumbag.

I’m just expecting a giant cliffhanger by the end of the last episode. Shoko may die, or they may clash in a way similar to the end of Code Geass’ first season. The battle, and whatever happens will probably be the end of this season, and we I think we could expect a time skip to the second season as well.

H-Neun will probably have something up his sleeve and may play a pivotal role in the second season as well. L-Elf has yet to really disclose anything about his revolution, and that’s a big thing so I’m wondering how they’re going to make everything work in a season when there’s still a lot to cover.

As usual, looking forward to the next episode. But damn, this one is just…

      • Kinza Datteri

I concur. I think Shouko will either die or stand in opposition to Haruto – if not, then Saki will oppose him. Someone will start working for Dorssia for sure. Academy will be obliterated, possibly by Haruto and then he will turn full psycho, killing indiscriminately, dropping colonies, etc. and finally running away.

I think princess Liselotte is already dead or they turned her into “something” connected to valvrave’s in some gore experiment, which ticked off L-elf. That golden bird cage. That bird cage is the key. Everybody insignificant dies, end of season one.

        Season two, the hunt begins.

As for the rape scene – Sunrise turned into MEGATROLL making those cliche sentiments of Haruto about losing human side and turning into monster from ep. 1&2 true. Sasuga SUNRISE, I like that.

  • Irenesharda

Oh, and again with the missing preview! What’s up with that Sunrise? What are you planning?

Oh well, whatever it is doesn’t include the Chinese. Here’s the screencaps for the preview of Episode 11 entitled something along the lines of “Military Court No. 54”.

I think it only happens if he goes red. He didn’t go red in the elevator so it couldn’t have happened. Just think of the complications if he did though… Holy shit.

  • Queenie

Lol dont see why the OP has so much hate for Saki. Other than L-Elf, Saki has the most complex and realistic personality of the entire cast. Come on, you cant even argue with me on that, it’s true. Shoko is a genki girl. She’s like if Yui and Haruhi got spliced together and add an extra helping of “Derp” and there you go. Saki isn’t bipolar lol. It’s entirely possible for you to like someone for who they are AND also like them because of the popularity they could bring you if you hooked up….

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Complex and realistic in Valvrave? That’s something that might be great in a normal cast, but this isn’t such. And on the note of her being not bipolar. She is. First she kisses him, then she disregards him. It has nothing to do with liking someone for two different reasons. It’s the fact that she likes him one moment and doesn’t the other. Although, we see less of that now.

Do you actually think I hate her? I’m just having fun like a lot of people do when I say a certain girl is #1. I do this by slamming the others whenever I can so you shouldn’t take what I say about her at face value all the time :)

  • Queenie

    Predictions:

    saki x haruto // shoko x L-Elf —- stuff happens—-> L-Elf x Princess // shoko x haruto // saki forever alone.

Haruto will do the “honorable” thing and pick Saki
L-Elf has been looking at shoko….L-Elf x Shoko

Saki has already been built up as an ice queen so she’s the most likely to be alone in the end whilst still having a happy ending. L-Elf has been looking at shoko….L-Elf x Shoko

Shoko will realize her love for L-Elf (or Haruto.. or both) and then die shortly after. My friend called her death EP 25. Haruto might die in some sacrifice but at this point one of them will probably die at the very end.

Shoko is most vulnerable right now bcuz she’s being given an inhuman angelic personality that only means that she’s either going to die or break bad before the end of the anime, Lacus style.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

That would be fine, but then I’d feel really sorry for Saki. God this situation just messed up.

L-Elf x Shoko? I don’t know how well that’s going to work out. He’s obviously going to go back to his princess… or is Sunrise going to pull something out again?

Shoko is putting up a lot of death flags with whatever she’s doing and it looks like she may die by the end of this season who knows. Saki may very well end up by herself, but I’m not sure about the relationship between everyone anymore. Hell, if this happens now, I don’t even know what awaits for us in season 2.

    • mikhailsharon

Hare, Shirley and Euphemia: These girls are nice, humble, downright angelic personalities and they are dead! Please Sunrise, please spare Shoko! You already killed Ania…

      TQ

  • Emmanuele

this is probably the first time I’ve seen a non-consensual sex scene where *both* participants were actually not consenting. Valvrave-tan is just awful — Kyubey-level awful.

people are already bracing themselves for a potential child — using the valvravn lore; let’s hope not, especially because both Saki and Haruto are effectively valvravn, at this point.

I have my doubts that Sunrise or Valvrave can handle this sort of plot and character development turn as well; I honestly hope the next episode is not going to be “cray cray kids”, high school musical melodrama, because if it is then I’m 600% done with this fucking show.

    • Emmanuele

also: is the promise Saki referred to in the time skip at the beginning of episode 7 the promise she made to Haruto in this episode?

      • xxbabaxx

the promise might not be to Haruto, can be to the team the golden 7, OR CHILD theory.
remember the pendent photo of child ? 200 years, vampire child ? ok sunrise come hit me with something

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I know right? Saki and Haruto are both forced by the VVV girl. I really doubt they can handle it properly either, and if it turns out to be as crazy as you say, I’m not even sure what I’m going to do anymore.

  • Noirkun

I…..I want my ridiculously awesome mecha anime back :(
I want an anime with floating space ghost girl telling people to use shining finger back :(

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Looks like it’s not Saki who is just broken. Some viewers are broken too.

  • flamerounin

saki having haruto’s child because of rape? hmmm, maybe that would explain why she looked mommy-ish (or at leas more mature) in the 200-year flash forward in episode 7. her rack looked bigger in that image compared to her present self (you know, how a woman’s breasts grow during pregnancy).

as for the rape scene itself, i dunno. while i understand the context and what it is supposed to be in the story, but that scene just really doesn’t feel right. they could have played a little less explicitly (seriously this one is already straddling the R-rated line).

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

NO. STAHP. SHE’S NOT GETTING A CHILD. SHE JUST GREW UP BECAUSE… PUBERTY.

      • Casey Lee

200 years worth of puberty, I kinda taken aback by my own minds. Q_Q

  • shiplore93

I really don’t even know what to say about his episode. Rape? in Valvrave? And I thought Sunrise was crossing some lines with Gintama. Potential babies? Screw that she’s probably going to give birth to a fucking Valvrave or something ridiculous.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I still have to give Sunrise some “credit” for having the balls to really do this shit. I just hope they do well in expanding everything out or it’ll just be plain retarded and not ridiculously awesome. I hope there are no babies. That would not work out very well. Probably…

  • Otakusoulemotion

I have read a few other reviews too and I can tell everyone is writing with a similar viewpoint…rape and NTR basically sums up the episode…

  • AmiMai

Depending on how the next episode plays out this anime could get very interesting. from what I’ve been noticing, Sunrise has been making Valvrave progressively darker and more gritty. There have been many happy, light hearted scenes, but it feels if you just scratch the surface, thing down there are not as pretty as they seem…

I have to say that this is a cliffhanger of hellish proportions…

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I can notice the change. Still, it feels like they took steps before and fucking FLEW OFF in this episode. Will be interesting to see what happens for sure. I can’t say I’ve been more excited for episodes in other anime in the past. If anything, this episode actually makes me want to watch more to see what ensues.

  • Psychopatito

Yep, totally thrown back by it. I guess I’m just feeling like all those people who haven’t read the Game of Thrones books and didn’t see some things coming. I was so open mouthed it was unbelievable. I thought Valvrave was flip-flopping some but got several things so right I wasn’t going to complain about the ridiculous parts. I was even trying hard to pin down the genre because that seemed all over the place. But boy, did they show me! That’s some gutsy writing. Gundam pales against this move in plot. There was an article on Entertainment Weekly a while back on how TV show writers were going where film writers did not dare and thus the lack of enthusiasm on cinema, it doesn’t surprise anymore. And literature teachers say that every story is a variation of five or seven basic ones. If they were watching this… How this a variation of something predictable? Anyway, what time does Valvrave run in Japanese TV? I’m deep into Japanese culture, but I don’t have the depth in this topic to even guess how they took it there.
I will be in Game-of-thrones-like shock for the rest of the week!

    • Onomarchus

I was hit by this episode much like I was by Game of Thrones two Sundays back.

Valvrave is becoming Drakengard meets Dennis Potter, to the extent those are different to begin with.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I feel very similar to when I watched some scenes in Game of Thrones. It’s just that…… the way it’s portrayed this time around is just… Dammit horny VVV girl.

  • Teo

I am surprised this happened but I’m not surprised that Sunrise did
this. Sunrise showed Karen’s tit in Code Geass since that show aired at a
time which was allocated for tv shows only for mature audience. Couldnt
find when Valrave aired in Japan (time) so I am just gonna assume
Sunrise used the same logic for this RAPE and NTR…..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, showing skin and rape are totally different in terms of caliber. This is a bold step for Sunrise. As for the time it airs, I’m fairly certain it’s late at night so it’s not for children by that alone.

  • Psychopatito

Geez, I forgot. At the beginning I was wondering about the last Valvrave shown in the opening and who’s going to pilot that one. After this, if Shoko is the one, that’s going to be a hell of an eternity. Imagine, two hundred years with the fact that … don’t even know how to put this whole mess in words. If I were Haruto, I would go and get a good explanation from L-elf on his not stopping it. Can he say he didn’t see this one …? —I don’t even want to say “coming”. But, being Haruto, would he put two and two together? Poor Shoko, Poor Haruto. Poor poor Saki.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I think there’s some significance in Shoko being the last one to be shown and her fading away. I mean, that’s pretty much a death flag in one respect, but it’s also something that gives her quite a big amount of significance. We’ll have to see if this is related with her being prime minister or whatever.

  • Dycize

So… That was a nice breather episode.

…Is what I’d like to say, but the rape hijack incident reared its ugly head. What can I say on this matter?… Yeah, that was totally unexpected. Also, VVV-girl was spamming the letter “H” while it happened (somehow that caught my attention). It’s a very, very, very awkward scene. Because not only did it pretty much come out of nowhere, I mean we knew something was up with VVV-girl being hungry and his beast face coming up more often… But nothing quite like THAT. But there’s also the fact that… Our emotionaly sensitive main character unknowingly raped a female friend he trusted. A friend who is now looking pretty broken. She had a horrible life before, but now, gee, Saki is like the reverse-Sue to Shoko’s regular Sue. So much for holy spirits… It’s more like, holy shit, what happened.

And now we’re left waiting for the next episode with this very bold writing move. You just know nothing will be the same as before with such an event. The next episodes are going to be intense. It’s kinda amazing how Valvrave manages to one-up itself like that… And always in the most surprising ways.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

And here some people thought Valvrave would lose steam as it went along if it always tried the absurd approach. I have faith in Sunrise for giving some amazing ridiculous events, but this is just… fffffffffffff SASUGA SUNRISE.

  • L-Elf Karlstein

    Just as planned. =)

  • Yurei

    This episode confirmed it.
Valvrape the Liberator is the best anime from this season.
Even Attack on Titan couldn’t make me stand up and clap at the screen like I did with this.
Anime of the century, sasuga Sunrise.

    oh god… no.
Please don’t make it into School Days.
Im still trying to forget it and Valvrape seems more of a “School Days” space-opera mecha action right now

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Nonononono it won’t be School Days. It won’t. It. Just. Won’t. The thought didn’t even come across my mind and now that it has, it will definitely not happen. Yep.

      • Casey Lee

I would say it at least has good potential to make it to School Days, let see if MC take proper route to that end.

  • cloudheart93

well as for this EP, I really like the starting as we get lots of explaination from Takumi. Rukino Kicking Haruto in the stomach (to me is best scene of week). & after Ania death, Rukino seems like she gotten cold too everyone except Haruto… we got more info about Shoko Dad, but what about Haruto dad? I mean he was the one who develop VVV right? I totally agree with you that shoko is the best girl, but I think Rukino is also not that bad. I mean she too has been fighting alone, from abusive parents to harsh society & unlike shoko, she doesn’t have anyone… even friends. Well last but not least the rape scene… personally I dun mind it, but Y did they keep switching the scene between the rape & shoko speech? That is what made me feel disgusted. It feels like the producers are bashing Shoko… While she is having an important speech for the sake of haruto, haruto was doing that thing with another woman… That is just gross!

    • Dycize

The thing is that what Shoko says “relates” to what is happening there… Like yeah, YOLO and they’re having sex. It’s less Shoko bashing and more “dramatic irony”. It also makes the matter worse, which is pretty clearly intended and has worked on you and many other viewers. You know, saying this makes me realise that they planned it pretty well… So hopefully they have the following well planned too.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

The reason why they kept switching between Shoko’s speech and the scene is because of juxtaposition. It’s supposed to make you feel sick. That’s the point of doing this and I must say that they did a damn good job of making me feel absolutely awkward while watching it.

And I don’t really think Saki is bad per se. I’m just having fun with making fun of random things all the time.

      • cloudheart93

Well they done it… I was a crazy fan of Valvrave! & thanks to that scene, I couldn’t get some nice sleep this past few days…(I know I am exaggerating but it’s true! ToT)
& as You said, I sure L-Elf know about this, I mean how he couldn’t have? He is the one who oversee the election, wouldn’t he find it funny that everyone in the module voted expect Haruto & Rukino? Which funny thing is that no one realize they was missing throughout the entire Election… =_=

PS: “Wait, when did he take off his pants?… I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?” This was a good one! I didn’t notice his pants was gone… Well the aftermath, Rukino didn’t even have a single piece of cloth left… She had to use Haruto clothes to cover herself… I was asking myself did Haruto ate her clothes? like really? LOL

Definitely makes that episode look fucking phenomenal not in the sense of the word “phenomenal” obviously. Yep… SSY has a MC called Saki, but she didn’t get close to this kind of treatment.

  • Drig

    No……..

    What the hell just happened?

That was disgusting. Yet helped push the pace of the series. It’s opened up so many new directions the story could take making it very hard to predict what’ll happen ( Yeah, this show never had that problem. )

I want to hate this episode. Really do. But I can’t help but feel this would be a stellar episode in hindsight if the following episodes make use of this to push some character development.

    6/10 for me….

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s almost as if they’re just trolling us hard right now to make plenty of space for more random stuff in the future. I don’t think an episode has ever made me feel so awkward. Like, just plain awkward sitting in silence and just not really thinking that they’ve done it or something like that. We’ll have to see though.

  • Angela Moseley

Since you asked for opinions, I’m simply going to share what I posted on Random C, I hope you don’t mind:

I knew under all the silliness Valvrave would turn out to be a
somewhat dark series. I was not expecting this, even after viewing a few
leaked images from last week. This is just messed up on so many levels,
I’m not even sure where to start. It was clear something tragic would
happen when Haruto was controlled by his VVV’s OS. Deny the cravings
long enough and VVV I begins to desire violent sexual gratification?
Haruto’s forced lust-thirst (ie, his glowing blood-red eyes) never
manifested itself with anyone else, not even Takahi. So I’m going to go
with the theory that Saki was special because she’s also a space
    vampire/cursed.

I suppose some clues were there but they only make sense in
hindsight. Cain’s comment about the Valvrave’s being the key to
“restoring” his clan. (When he said “reproduce” I though he meant JIOR
had manufactured more Valvraves, nothing more.) Then there were
instances where VVV I’s OS constantly asked about sex. Saki stealing
Haruto’s first kiss, the hunger comments (which we now know were sexual
in nature), the “insert” comment L-Elf saw and finally Saki asking
Haruto if someone “touched by God” could have a relationship with a
normal human. If the theory VVV I sees regular humans as “food” and
vampires of the opposite gender to be “forcible mating material,” then
answer to Saki’s question is “no.”

The rape itself… Even if Saki tearfully embraced Haruto it was still
rape. (The way he pounced on her and took her, that had to be painful on
so many levels. *Cringes and crosses her legs.*) They were both victims
of the Valvrave’s lustful OS. It’s just the act was disturbing on so
many levels. Saki is in infatuated with Haruto and wanted his heart (and
body), but all she got a violent sexual assault, with the full
knowledge he’d gone berserk. He’s the type of guy to stand by her and
try to make things right but his heart still belongs to Shoko. As for
Haruto, he’s also a victim and the realization is going to hit him very
hard. (If you remember episode one, he was quite the pacifist before
climbing into Valvrave I.) I mean, NO ONE would react well to waking up
in tattered clothing, looking over to see a friend completely naked and
broken in spirit, only learn it was you who violently raped her against
    your will.

I don’t see how a stable relationship could form from this. Even if
the pair come to an understanding and manage to keep it a secret (which I
doubt), there will always be an element of fear. Both parties would
fear another sexual attack and Haruto *may* never trust himself around
woman again, especially Saki or Shoko. Speaking of Shoko, I’m sure this
incident will lead her to discovering the secret Haruto has been keeping
    from her.

Hell, maybe L-Elf tells her. He was staring at her rather hard during
her speech and seems to know something is up with Haruto. Or perhaps he
was staring at her because she’s suddenly the new prime minster or
she’s sparked his interest in other ways. I’m still getting the feeling
he might reveal some of the true nature of Valvrave I to her or Haruto’s
    subjugation by said OS.

This definitely an episode where I could see people having serious
thoughts about dropping Valvrave. I’m going to stick with it but I’m
still disturbed and saddened for Haruto, Saki and Shoko. I guess
    Sunrise’s writing was effective.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, no problem. Glad to have your opinion here as well!

I agree with Saki being the “special” one that the urge is released on. It could just be the VVV girl doing it, but I’m pretty sure when she said she’s hungry, she really means sex.

Damn, if Saki is really the only one who can satiate the hunger, then this is going to be one very, very awkward relationship from now on. I can already see the degrading of both their minds, and this anime may just be going down the dark road even further. I really think that Haruto will really feel like he’s a monster and will force himself to not hurt anyone else, especially Shoko.

L-Elf is just standing around this time knowing perfectly well, I presume, what’s going on. Agh, this one may be a one heck of a painful episode to watch, but I have to say that I can’t wait for the next episode. I’m just hoping they won’t downplay the consequences of the rape scene in this episode. Eh, they probably won’t. It’s probably going to be a deciding factor in the anime.

      • Angela Moseley

Because the VVV OS is hungry sexually, I have to wonder how Haruto will satiate her without going berserk. Will any girl do or must it be Saki because of the curse? I’m going to go off topic slightly here: This kind of reminds me of a book series I love called the Sholan Alliance. There are telepathic pairs in the book that are linked by mind, body and soul. Every five days the couple have to copulate otherwise they’ll both die. Perhaps Haruto must have sex every few days (minus the threat of dying) in order to stay sane. If he and Saki were an actual couple the task wouldn’t be that difficult, but said turn of events makes this prospect rather scary. So as you said, “awkward!”

Given Haruto’s sweet nature I can easily see him saying “I really am a monster now!” This show has so many strange parallels with Gargantia. I’m sure Haruto will have a break down not totally unlike Ledo’s. On my own blog I wrote about the the premier and how Haruto totally jumped into the Valvrave without considering the consequences of his actions. I was partially joking and I never imaged the story would end up here.

I agree fully about L-Elf. The more I think about it, the more I’m positive he knew. He knew about Haruto’s frequent urges, saw the VVV OS’ lusty desires while in the cockpit and noticed Haruto and Saki were absent from the election.

I have faith Sunrise won’t downplay what happened. The series always had a dark edge and it’s been getting darker since Aina’s death. The writers at Sunrise seem to have crossed a moral event horizon, there’s no going back. I’m not saying the show won’t ever have elements of humor again but a line has been crossed. This series is no Star Driver.

  • http://bmdimension.blogspot.com/ Cassandra@Book&Movie Dimension

I still can’t believe it! I don’t think any of us who are fans of Valvrave the Liberator expected this.

When I first saw the sex scene thought it was rape and it is but from Haruto’s point of view it is. But Rukino at some point she accepted it and so it became consensual but still its wrong since Haruto is the one who doesn’t know what’s going on and also the fact that he forced himself on her to begin with. So its rape but turns into consensual sex.

It definitely held a lot of power considering you get a feeling that Rukino sees that the Valvraves are a curse but she wants to help Haruto still.

I couldn’t help but feel that L-Elf knows something somehow by the way he was looking at Shoko so much during her election speech. Shoko I wonder how she’ll react. On many boards with people who watched the episode everyone thinks this will push Shoko over the edge to finally pilot the remaining valvrave. All I know is that poor Shoko if she finds out about this considering we finally get a real suggestion that she wants to confess her love for Haruto on the Moon. Too late now.

    Great episode commentary.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I still didn’t expect it even when he was tearing off her clothes. I really didn’t think they would go the extra step. At least I didn’t get spoiled or I wouldn’t have felt the way I did when I finished the episode.

L-Elf….. He definitely knows that it’s going down. I’m 100% sure. He’s the damn prophet.

Glad that you like the post!

  • truthtellah

Man, I saw this episode and had a similar reaction as you had. WHAT IN THE FLIPPIN DOLPHIN WHAT IS AHHH?! And I think that’s a perfectly normal response to have to this.

Personally, I agree that how they treat the rest of the series will tell the tale on whether the rape of Haruto and Saki was necessary. If it’s just brushed off as a joke or as the start of some love between Haruto and Saki, then -f*ck- Sunrise. Seriously. That’s just f*cked up. But if they continue to spiral it out of control as they have been and really address that this is a much darker series than initially suggested, then it has potential to be something special. And I’d give a lot of credit to Sunrise for taking a risk on a show that is actively unraveling parts of the genre. If they embrace it, they could impact many anime to come.

I’m just not certain whether that’s their direction. As with the rest of the show, I have no idea what is going to happen next. Next episode, I’m half expecting a fanservicey beach episode ending with Shoko crushing a small furry animal under her boot while Eru-erufu jacks off. Depending on how it develops, this could either be the big moment when we realized the true direction of the series or a point where it’s perhaps not a show worth supporting. I hope they can make something special out of it, but they could have just as easily ruined an otherwise entertaining show.

I’m left wanting to see more, but it’s the first show in a while that has genuinely pissed me off a little bit. And maybe that’s the point. I sure hope it is. I’ve been feeling like Valvrave might be one of the best of this season, but if they’ve messed this up, it may just end up as an unfortunate disappointment. I’m going to stick with it, but after deciding to do this, they damn well better deliver.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I’m really hoping that Sunrise will not be so shallow and disregard this event. Actually, I kind of doubt it now as I’m sure they’re perfectly aware of the consequences of creating this scene. Whatever the future holds for anime in general, however, I don’t want anime to use this as a means to advance the plot unless absolutely necessary. It’s hard to handle, and when it’s pulled out in the wrong way, disaster ensues.

Uncertainty is one thing almost everyone can agree Valvrave has. I certainly didn’t expect this coming so trying to surmise what happens next is kind of beyond me. That’s the fun of watching Valvrave. You never really know what’s going to happen next. Even if it seems obvious, Sunrise may just twist it another direction.

      • truthtellah

        My Prediction:

Next week, they’ll have the normal Valvrave intro, and then the bulk of the episode will just be a new season of K-On.

  • warghostmon

In all my years of watching manga, there has never been a scene where i talked out loud, Shinji breaking down in you can (not) redo? nothing. kamina dying halfway through Gurren Lagann? small inner thought but not a peep. Valvrave: “HOLY SHIT!! AW MAN…AW…DAMN..DAMN!!!”

sunrise always has had some balls when handling things..but this… I can Say for a fact:

There has never been an anime that has caused this much of a reaction from me, and now that they’ve done it, they may change my very views on how powerful and how drastic a single moment in an anime can be.

you can dog on this episode all you want, but we all want to, perhaps need to, see how far sunrise can take this..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s one thing to be dramatic, but it’s another thing to execute it like this and do it well for the overall story later on as well. Anyone can insert a shocking event if they really wanted to. Not everyone will be able to do a great job at working it out. We’ll have to see how Sunrise continues this next week.

      • warghostmon

Very True..in fact this is why we’re even having this conversation. the thing is that while they may not present the aftermath as well as we all are hoping it could go..I honestly believe that they have no choice but to make a serious attempt at doing so; because if not, there could be a decent amount of possible backlash.

This review was a great representation of mine, and I assume many others’ feelings about how this episode reflects on the series as a whole. I don’t think something as serious as rape belongs in a narrrative that cannot contextualize and discuss it in a critical way. The fact that it happened in this show in such and unexpecting and well written way, leads me to believe the show HAS to get more serious. Considering its about a teenage military state, it is safe to assume the show could have a theme about “growing up” as its plot gets more serious overtime, the characters mature. This is a HUGE responcibility for an anime as we all know many fail to be consistant in characternans plot development. I hope it is all worth it in the end and we learn something while growing with the characters.
