SURPRISE! Bet you didn’t expect me to do this did you? (Unless you follow me on Twitter) But yes, I will be going through White Album 2 and picking some key episodes to review. (I will probably just end up reviewing this one and the finale) I will never watch any episodes beyond the one I am currently reviewing until I finish writing them so even though it finished airing, it’ll be more or less the same as my usual reviews. Oh, and happy new year!

Ogiso Setsuna happy

One last song.

The one that she mistakenly thought was a love song from Haruki to Touma.

I’M LENDING THEM, BUT I’M NOT HEARING ANYTHING.
They’ll use it for a dramatic moment in a future episode I’m sure.

After hours of sleep lost, hours upon hours of training sessions, the time is finally here. The time has come to stand upon the stage and perform for just fifteen minutes. But those fifteen minutes are so much more than the duration makes it seem. It’s the culmination of all of their time together, and it’s probably one of the best times of their lives. With the two others who made all of this happen, Ogiso Setsuna is capable of finding the courage to sing the way she wants to, and it’s not just singing that she finds the courage to do; she also finds the courage to express her feelings. To the audience, the way Setsuna bumps against Touma may just be her moving to the song. To Setsuna and Touma, however, it’s a way of communicating clearly about how they really feel. They may not even be capable of expressing their emotions properly to each other in normal conversation, but in this performance, in that moment, they can do so more than in any other situation. Here, the floodgates are opened. Here, the clash of feelings reach a whole new level with this climax. It’s a battle between friends. It’s a battle between lovers. It’s a battle between people who just want to have the time of their lives with those important to them. It’s also a heartwarming moment between these three people who will probably never share a similar moment ever again. It’s… not going to end up well is it?

D: WHYUGOTTABELIKETHAT?

Just, stop. Nothing good ever comes out of characters saying this.

STAHP IT.

Touma Kazusa out of shower

Yeah, I’m pretty sure anyone would…
HAWT DAYUM.

Well, he can’t look away any longer.

Just go take a shower and do what you did before for a reward.

ERABE.
1. Push her away and avoid A GIANT SHITSTORM.
2. Kiss and try to survive the GIANT SHITSTORM that will end with everyone in despair.
3. Setsuna turns into a male and the fight for TOUMA BEGINS.

You need to learn a thing or two from ERU ERUFU.

DOES MY BUTT SMELL TODAY?

Ogiso Setsuna leaning in

Wow. For real? YEAH, HE’S TOTALLY NOT GOING TO DO IT NOW THAT YOU SAID THAT.

Thinking of Touma before you kiss Setsuna?
This player…
THIS BETTER NOT BE ANOTHER FUCKING SCHOOL DAYS.

White Album 2 kiss haruki and setsuna

SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTSTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMM.

I feel sorry for Touma. D:

Overwhelmed by their performance and probably filled to the brim with adrenaline, it’s not that much of a surprise that Setsuna and Haruki end up kissing because of the suspension bridge effect. That’s not to say that they really don’t hold feelings for each other, but their decision to do so is made much easier because of their hype-inducing performance. Setsuna’s feelings for Haruki are obvious, but what about Haruki? Does he truly love Setsuna? If we go with his description of Setsuna as an “impossibly distant flower,” then it’s no doubt he feels attracted towards her romantically. However, it’s an “impossibly distant” one. It’s one he thinks he could have never reached, so what does it mean now that he has? Will he fancy her from afar and maintain the distance to reach towards something he deems to be closer like Touma who he views to be a “girl” and not an “impossibly distant flower?” And why would Touma just leave him in that room like that? I’m certain that she wouldn’t just leave him sleeping like that without good reason, so I am thinking that something happened while he was sleeping between Setsuna and Touma. Maybe, they got into a fight because Touma refused to voice her feelings. One thing is for sure though, Haruki hasn’t properly voiced his feelings, and has gone straight for the kiss in a day filled with emotions. Moreover, he thinks of Touma right before he kisses Setsuna. We know this isn’t the solidification of the relationship between Setsuna and Haruki. After all, they are just dreaming while a storm is brewing, and this storm may be bigger than what we think it to be.

White Album 2 Episode 7 Review

You know, I just wanted to get to the review section as fast as possible so I can say that I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHOW. No, seriously, I really, really like this show. One of my favorite genres is romance, but the thing is that in this past year, there hasn’t been one that’s focused purely on romance that’s this satisfying to watch. Heck, there aren’t even that many shows this year that’s just romance and doesn’t have comedy tagged on as well. We get so many RomComs or other things slapped on with romance, but we rarely get one that’s just focused purely on it. Finally, we get one, and it’s a damn good one to boot. This type of show is something that I’ve always wanted to review and it’s a shame that I skipped out on it because it had the “2” with its name, and I didn’t know that it has almost nothing to do with the first White Album. Ugh, I try my best to not miss out on opportunities like this, and I just have to miss a show like this. Oh well, at least I picked it up before the next season started.

Anyways, onto actually reviewing the anime, the first thing to praise is undoubtedly the build-up in the past six episodes that led to this climax being as impactful as it is. It doesn’t try to rush out dramatic moment one after the next; White Album 2 fleshes out the foundation of a romance show which are the characters. Both Touma and Setsuna get proper screen-time, and each have their own little quirks that make them who they are. No matter who you ship, you can’t deny that the characterization of both characters are very well done. Throughout the episodes, viewers really have to try to understand the characters as who they are, how they really feel, and other aspects to their characters that aren’t obvious. The characters have depth to them that is hinted by subtle moments here and there. It’s not just through dialogue that they portray their feelings to each other which make their interactions more realistic and just a bit more profound as you really have to dig a bit deeper than usual. Setsuna’s shower scene, the card scene where it shows that Setsuna has all the sevens, and so on are all cleverly put in to give a bit of hints here and there to how the characters feel and what kind of person they are. Though sometimes, we may dig a little too deep. It helps that the characters are interesting enough for me to actually care to look a bit more at their actions as otherwise I wouldn’t even bother in the first place.

Then of course, there is the performance itself in this episode and this is a proper example of how to utilize the build-up from previous episodes properly to create something emotionally moving. It’s hard not to feel excited about their performance when we saw six episodes of their preparation to reach this point. Then of course, we have the glorious songs themselves which only add to the impact. Though, don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the kind of emotionally moving episode that’d get you to cry. This is the kind of episode that would make you happy, and just completely satisfied that they have accomplished what they set out to accomplish. As the songs continue and I see the flashbacks to previous episodes, I really appreciate more and more how everything was built up. This anime shows what spot-on pacing can do for a show. It truly makes the climax all the more worth it. At the same time, there is the looming storm that only gets more threatening while all of this is happening. This makes me feel the time between the three of them is even more precious.

I never had the opportunity to stand up on stage and perform like that so I don’t know how it feels, but the show does a good job of showing what it may be like. I can’t help but be pumped like the audience members at their performance which actually surprised me. It helps that the songs are catchy as hell, and that the performers are damn fabulous. I mean, seriously, DAT SAX. TOUMA TOO STRONK. Overall, this is an incredibly satisfying episode to watch and shows what proper writing that creates proper developments, no melodrama, and no dumb misunderstandings among other things can do for a show. Yes, I’m lavishly praising this show because I’ve been waiting for one like this ever since I started the site, and more importantly, it deserves it. And keep in mind, this season is only the introductory chapter. The closing one will be far greater than this one from what I’ve seen as the ratings for that VN are crazily high. It ranks next to Muv-Luv, Key VNs, and so on. You know what to be excited for when a second season gets announced. Fuck yes.

    Haaaah… enjoy the sweet feelings while they last. Now, time for the drama to unfold ^_^;

It’s always nice to see one more blogger to try and fall for the charm of this show. It’s a tragedy how little-known it is, due to its relatively lackluster predecessor.

    Enjoy the ride!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

It’s only not that well known in the west though. It’s pretty well known in Japan from what I’ve heard.

I will! It should be fun. :)

    • MgMaster

Indeed it is :) The problem is,as expected, the same old…that damn “2” in the tittle.

      • niknasr

I think “Todokanai Koi” is the most suitable title for it,, if you know what I mean.. ^_^

        • MgMaster

“Todokanai Koi” would definitely fit it too and might’ve been the better choice seeing as how the show missed so many watchlists due to the bad reputation the White Album title got from the previous series.

Stil,White Album is a pretty awesome name if you ask me. Besides that,it’s the song that brought them together and it’s a title for a show that ended in winter.

  • zztop

Which new Winter shows will you be blogging next season, entrav?
And do you plan on doing any overall reviews for the 1st halves of Tokyo Ravens and Strike the Blood?

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Winter preview is coming up really soon.

No, I will not be doing overall reviews for the 1st half of those shows. I will most likely end up reviewing the whole thing if I ever plan to review them.

  • niknasr

Greetings, I’m new here, although I’ve been following your reviews since summer.. I really like your style in reviewing especially my favourite: DxD New.. :)

Back to the topic, yeah in all honesty, as I have completed all the episodes, I would say, this series is the hidden gem of this fall.. The flaw of the characters (more obvious in the latter episode) is what make this more interesting.. The character is really believable. Satelight really did a good job in this.. I really recommend this to all who love romance stories.. That’s all..

Now waiting for your reviews of Outbreak Company, Golden Time, StB, Tokyo Ravens and Machine-Doll.. ^_^

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

      Thanks a lot!

Indeed, love or hate them, the characters are well done.

I’m honestly not sure if I can get through all of those. Certainly do not expect backlogs like this on any of those series because I just do not have the time and energy. You can expect general reviews for those shows, but it will take quite some time for me to review even a few of them.

      • niknasr

Yeah, I understand.. Well, general reviews is good too, will be looking forward to that.. :) I really wished you would picked this up instead of that overhype (mediocrity at it finest) Kyoukai show.. Well, it’s too late for that now..

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

DFJSODPFJDSFIOPSDJFOISDDFJDSOPFAJSDPOFS. I feel even worse now. D:

          • MgMaster

I would’ve heavily recommended it but I just didn’t think you’d be into the romance genre as much or at least not a more dramatic one.Not that you see many good ones anyway…Having watched the 1st White Album I had mediocre expectations for this one at best too and was even debating on whether I should pick it up or not. The fact that I still enjoyed some aspects of the quite-lacking previous one, such as the music & atmosphere and that curiosity got the better of me helped here. I ended up reading a few good things about it and how it’s a completely new story. The more I read, the more curious I became and after watching 1st episode,I was already getting hyped at the potential this show could have and at the same time, worried that it’ll fail to achieve it. As the show went on,my hype overshadowed my worries but they never really went away, not even now, because I started expected more & more out of it.

I mean,Valvrare’s probably the best example of 2013(for it’s fans anyway) that a good show that viewers really enjoyed can screw up big time at the end.

  • MgMaster

Woah, woah, woah…I never expected you to be that much into romances like this Entrav so this is indeed quite a surprise and the fact that this is my favorite show of the season(okay, maybe year) makes it a very, very pleasant, seeing that I’ll get to see your input on it. I too, have been waiting for a romance like this for years but I also see it as a good thing that we don’t get something like WA2 too often as it makes it even more special(okay,a bit more often wouldn’t hurt since the ocean of generic RomComs and poorly-made,melodramatic anime is too vast but anyway, you get the point).

WA2’s done a fantastic job of making us care for the characters with it’s slower pacing for like, half of it’s run and as such,it makes it hard not to emphatize with Kazusa,Setsuna & Haruki when things get messy(you can’t call this a spoiler since you just know they will :D).

I’ve seen various reactions from people towards the characters in WA2’s later half. The show delivers big time on emotions,a mixed bag of them too but emotions nonetheless. I found myself in a love-hate relationship with them but that’s just how I like it. WA2’s characters are complex(with Setsuna taking the cake here): likeable, talented, pretty smart but flawed and inexperienced at the same time. I’m curious to see how you’ll react to the next episodes.

ALSO,SHIPPING TIME? LET’S GO- Wait, nevermind. It’s a bit hard for me here as I like both girls. From my shipping of Saki in Valvrare you’d probably expect me to be aboard the SS Setsuna and I will say that I like her a bit(the difference is really small though) more because I find her character more complex,at least in this season. However,I’ll say what most people would(and have throughout this show’s run): that Haruki & Kazusa are the better match up.

I’ll stop before I spoil anything now and let you enjoy the beautiful mess that is White Album 2 :)

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I am really into romance shows. I actually just finished the final episode. I just… I don’t think I’ve ever felt so “weird.” Devastated, confused, torn, sad, and all these emotions just whirl into one, and it’s a very unique feeling that I really never got from watching other romance shows. I think some of that had to do with the fact that I read some mild spoilers about what happens later on. It’s so fucking brutal that it makes me view this last episode in a totally different light. Holy shit. MY HEART. Ugh. I just… God damn, I got what I wanted, a proper romance, but I have to pay a price for it.

      • MgMaster

^Yep,we all did but I consider it well worth it. I’ve read a few mild spoilers myself(although by the looks of your comment, probably less than you) but they weren’t anything unexpected. I find WA2’s story pretty predictable but IMO,rather than knowing what CAN/WILL happen, the enjoyment here lies in seeing HOW it happens.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Well, what I read was very much predictable. The thing is just how it makes me view this ending in a different and even more despairing light because dammit, it wouldn’t have been as painful if they just settled it right then and there no matter how difficult it was. Alas, it’s not meant to be, and we’ll have to wait for the next two arcs.

  • Gamematio

But- But- … Police outfits are hooooooooottt!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

No one said they were anything short of smoking especially on TOUMA KAZUSA.

      • Gamematio

Hehe, that kiss man … I was like: O_O he’s fucked.
