My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Episode 12 Review
“Thus, Him and Her and Her’s Mistaken Youth Continues.”
“Kōshite, Kare to Kanojo to Kanojo no Seishun wa Machigai Tsudzukeru.”

As Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru reaches it’s final episode, I begin to feel that bit of longing for more. I’m really beginning to miss it, and by the next episode, I’ll probably miss it a lot more. The characters, the interactions, and the Hachiman approaches to situations have certainly surprised and delighted me in more ways than one. I’m sure we’ll all miss something about OreGairu.
(Note: The next episode is an extra and may not continue the story from this episode. Depending on the contents of the next episode, I may title this one the finale)

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
Episode 12 Impressions

Yahari Hikigaya Komachi best imouto

Best imouto.

Hikigaya Komachi

Pretty fabulous.

Say it louder next time. Maybe she’ll even blush.

While Komachi is being the best imouto ever, you have Yukinoshita Yukino and Hachiman watching the jazz band conducted by no other than Haruno. You can see why Yukino wanted to be like her; Haruno is undeniably a fabulous girl even though her facade is quite disgusting at times. Even so, from the last episode we know that she still has Yukino’s best interest in mind. And of course, we all know that Sagami is crying in a corner about how much of a failure she is. She’s really not fit for this kind of work. Stumbling on stage, not being able to lead the people successfully, and so on basically summarizes what she’s been doing for the festival.

There’s the tsundere.

Yui ready to duke it out.

Yukino merit deal

Can’t say no to that.

Yukino Yukinoshita

Hikigaya rare smile

Yuigahama Yui cute moe Yukinon anime thank you

Yuigahama Yui

Honestly, I can’t help but smile as Yukino stands up to Haruno and offers the deal while saying that this is how she’s always been. It’s moments like these where she truly shines as an individual with a firm, cold, calculated, and straight to the point personality. Yui may waver at moments where Haruno mocks her, but Yukino doesn’t let that waver her one bit. Even Haruno can’t help but accept the offer as there’s really no merit in not doing so. It’s always fascinating watching the sisters interact, and sometimes Haruno may maneuver around Yukino, but this time, Yukino displays that she’s no push-over.

Dude just fucking…

Seriously. Just…

Hayama the nice guy can’t overlook this.

Hikigaya smiling success

Because he’s Hikigaya Hachiman.

Hikigaya hachiman loner

Wow. Where to even start with this section between Sagami and Hikigaya Hachiman? From the start we know that Hachiman doesn’t give a shit about Sagami. He’s only really finding her because Yukino has to, and he’s only not taking the sheet of paper back by itself because he has to. Keeping Yukino’s request in mind, he can’t take the simple route without resorting to his brutal side which he holds so dear. Hayama may be able to say the words that everyone needs her, but he can’t. Doing so would just be betraying himself, and more importantly, changing himself to suit the world around him. We know that he doesn’t want to do that. He showed us how he really molds the world around him instead of changing himself to suit the world. And he does just that.

Sagami really just wants people to, like Hikigaya said, depend on her and rely on her. She wants to bathe in the spotlight of being someone more than she currently is without actually holding the responsibilities. From the start she hasn’t been keen on actually improving her abilities. Originally, after some adversity, she basically gave up. It’s clear that she wasn’t devoted on the idea of actually being a chairman and making the festival a success. She just wanted to wield the title to make herself feel better. Hachiman is making her out to be this big villain and then lumping him with her to make it even more apparent how terrible she really is. Hachiman was nearly about to deliver the finishing blow about her not being important and reliable to others when Hayama intersects.

Many would agree that Hayama is essentially the “anti-Hachiman.” His methods are more likable, less cruel, and socially acceptable than Hachiman’s which is why he has to stop him. Just like Hikigaya Hachiman who keeps true to himself, so does he. It’s not that Hayama doesn’t understand the reason why Hachiman is doing this. It’s just that he can’t accept it because that’s not how he deals with things, and that’s not how he wants to see things are dealt. Hikigaya Hachiman has become so hated that the others all turn on him. As a result, it almost seems like his words are nothing more than something coming out of a huge asshole. People will feel sorry for Sagami, and she would get the proper support to do what she has to do. As for Sagami actually growing as a person… I’m not sure. She may just disregard everything he said out of spite, but I’m sure that she knows that while he may be a huge asshole, he’s still right in some respects. This may motivate her to change because she doesn’t want to be lumped in with him.

What a harsh truth.

Yahari shizukaxhachiman

Hikigaya Hachiman

Yes yes, I saw the batman picture.

In the end, only a few people understand what he was really trying to do and the rest disparage him with cold looks of contempt. Shizuka’s tender moment with Hachiman is quite a nice touch to the scene especially since she’s usually about to punch him right in the face. Some people are jumping aboard the ShizukaxHachiman train, and I don’t really blame them. Shizuka is very frank with everything that she says to Hachiman. She doesn’t sugarcoat anything because she knows he’ll know. Hachiman isn’t a person who is born completely different from everyone else. One may say that his perspective has been altered because of his experiences. So while he may have gotten used to being hurt, it still hurts to some degree. And for those who care about him, it’ll hurt even more. Moreover, Hachiman solemnly accepts Shizuka’s advice which makes me only respect him more for listening and understanding when it matters.

Ah, the Yukino and Hachiman interactions are back better than before. With witty comments thrown at each other, I can’t help but be entertained. As for the contents of the conversation. Hikigaya tries to become friends with Yukino and gets shut down. Well, that is she did say that “I don’t lie.” That just indicates to Hachiman, that she’s really lying. Moreover, Yukino is saying that she “wasn’t lying,” and that she “didn’t know him well.” She’s just saying what she thought before everything happened and not about the present. Her words of “but now I do” basically accepts what Hachiman was trying to confess before being swiftly cut off. It’s a nice subtle way of saying that they’re friends now that they’ve gone through all these things together and got to know each other better. It’s something that can really only be done between Yukino and Hachiman. I’m glad that OreGairu takes a smarter, less direct, but impactful way of delivering the same message that many other anime would deliver with a much more generic affirmation.

Don’t we all feel that way sometimes? We think that a certain event is trivial and unimportant at the time, but knowing that even such a trivial thing will end brings a tinge of sadness that we’ll one day look back on with fondness and perhaps the same tinge of sadness. Sure, it may be a trivial thing, but sometimes, those trivial things are the most important because they constitute for a lot of our lives. And whether we realize it or not, those trivial things could just be the things that brought us the most happiness without us realizing it. Sometimes, only when it is almost gone. Only when we know that it’ll leave our grasps forever do we appreciate it. But sometimes, we look at it when we are in the moment and cherish it for what it is while regretting that the curtains will one day fall upon the moment forever. Whatever it may be, just as the trivial event may have brought a bit of emotion when it happened, when we look back when it has ended, or look forward as it’s happening, we can’t help but feel at least that tinge of sadness.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru Episode 12 Review

Ah, that last paragraph really let my thoughts run free about how I feel. It’s much like how I feel currently about OreGairu and other anime in the past that have given me some emotional attachment. While watching these types of shows, I feel all sorts of emotions. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I smile at some amazing moments, sometimes I cringe, sometimes I open my jaw in disbelief, and sometimes I cry. OreGairu has put me through quite a ride challenging some of my thoughts on the situations that many other anime do not. I have to think with the characters and the situation. OreGairu has made me smile at some amazing interactions, and it has made me feel that tinge of sadness for it is almost over. I guess this isn’t just for OreGairu as Hataraku Maou-sama!, and many other shows I have previously watched have made me feel this way. It’s just that the last few moments of this episode truly hits me. Perhaps, it’s for personal reasons as something kind of similar to what’s happening in the last part of the episode is ending for me. Even so, I’m sure I’ll miss Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru for it has been quite an unexpected delight.

He is not the hero they need, but the hero they deserve.
Now he needs a cowl… is it me or YUI don’t really seem impressed by hachi at the end, i think is because yui don’t understand his methods of interaction or something, where as yukino really digs his shit. But for some reason i like YUI alot more then YUKINO. HARUNO wants the D SO BAD.

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

I thought you would put the picture of him as well haha.

Well, I think she understands, but she just doesn’t like how Hikigaya goes about doing it. Even if she didn’t completely understand, she knows that he’s not a bad person so she would partially understand. Anyways, I like them both. It’s just that Yukino’s interactions with Hachiman are pretty amazing.

      • xxbabaxx

Yea i agree, she knows she just doesn’t like it or don’t understand why he does it, being the “anti-hero” and all, because she is all sunshine and lolipop mentality. She knows he is a nice person tho seeing she is the only one that cares about him/ knows his name at the start, haha. I fuking love their interactions, they are witty and doesn’t sound so script, like conversations you actually see in real life, i guess the biggest highlight of this show is how much you can actually relate to it. Each character feels real and possible. Conversations are smart and voice actor really brought life to the show. This is another show this season along with TITAN that the anime version actually enhance the story. Reading it in LN you can really only imagine the interaction and the tone they use, but the voice actor executed it so well it gives you the feel over and above what you get from reading it.

        • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Haha. Well, we can always upload that picture that everyone basically has if it comes to that.

Anyways, I totally agree with the conversations being realistic. It just naturally flows. The voice actors are excellent, but I’ve honestly never really had a problem with almost all anime in terms of voice acting. They’re honestly all pretty fantastic, but of course, there are people who are better than others. In this anime especially, the voice actors are spot on. It feels like I’m watching two people talk it out in real life. Though, in real life there’s not as much intellectual conversational jabbing left and right and more gossiping which is a shame.

When you do meet people who talk like this, you can’t help but be entertained. It’s just interesting seeing the comments they come up with and it’s just pure entertainment.

          • The Atomic Dwarf

That’s because Japan has a lot invested in voice acting. They have deidcated schools for that and even there the chances of actually becoming a voice actor after finishing are quite slim. It’s quite a tough and competitive enviroment. And it produces some of the most talented V.A. out there.

There was a vid out there with the V.A. of 8man singing in his sarcastic tone just to prove their raw talent but I can’t find it anymore :(.

The only other country who comes close is the US and that’s mostly because of the gaming industry rather than animations/cartoons and even there sometimes you bang your head on the table our of frustration because of the poor quality in acting. Though there are some exceptions.

          • xxbabaxx

yea in Japan voice actor can become national idols, Nana Mizuki example is considered national treasure. Many singers, and even actors had their career starting off as CVs. Well western voice actor is good in games i suppose, but … dubbed anime, JESUS……… especially early ones, i will not pay to watch those. Even some cartoon are wishy washy at best.

          • The Atomic Dwarf

The best dub in american voice acting has been done in an oldschool anime which became the benchmark for all the dubs after it. I’m talking about Cowboy Bebop.
As for the worst. The One Piece Dub!

          • xxbabaxx

Ah yea don’t really watch anything in dub, subtitle is the best. Prefer Chinese sub, words and phrases are close and translatable, English sub in certain anime just miss the little bits and pieces, slang and cultural phrases. English is more relaxing to read tho.

Cowboy Bebop is CLASSIC, the dub better be good. haha one piece, i just hate dub in general they suck everytime i seen dual audio stuff. inb4 english, SWITCH audio.

          • xxbabaxx

oh yea voice actors are excellent in anime pretty much since ever, i seen anime that even dates back to the 70s, gundam 0079 etc, they were so good. Just some actors are just so good at the character they represent, and i think they picked the perfect match for this anime. They sound like who they are and what they are, which is a plus. I do agree …. too much gossips these days, hence why i stay home and watch anime. Convos sucks IRL bro ~! haha

  • omgITSorange

This show was good. I like how they execute a lot of things in this show. I’m a little sad that this anime is about to end :( Heck, I already miss it..

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Yeah, I’m quite sad that it’s going to go, and while I’m a bit disappointed in myself for not covering it earlier, I’m glad I at least picked some of the episodes up. I’m going to miss it a fucking lot.

      • denito1

But… there will be a second season.

  • The Atomic Dwarf

Leave it to 8man to save the day regardless of the pain he has to endure. A true hero! Na nananananana!

But seriously, I think he took things a bit too far now. Love his dark knight atitude and all but the teacher is right, if he keeps this up things might get out of control someday. Can’t wait to see how they’ll wrap things up in the final episode.

On a side note. Yukinon winks! HNGGGGGG!

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

But yeah, he’ll have to learn and I’m not exactly sure how he’s going to stay true to himself while not hurting others around him who care about him. That should be really interesting.

    • xxbabaxx

Legend of the 8man. ^ best pic. Sadly we won’t see much conclusion to anything this season, shame since everything just started rolling. There 7 volumes to the LN interesting, and anime actually covered 6 volume worth of content, if the author writes fast enough i might get a 2nd season. only started since 2011, so maybe 2nd season in 2 years time. :( 2 years too long imo

  • Drig

The best show so far this season. Just edges out Chihayafuru 2 and Uchuu Kyoudai because their pacing was all over the place.

Loved the interaction between Yukinon and Hikky. Still, as a Yui fan, I was kinda disappointed to see her resemble more or less a tag-on so far this series. I haven’t read the LN because I can’t get my hands on it but I was kinda hoping Yui would get a bigger role : .Oh well, S2 will have to do right now since the final episode looks like it’s just a filler kinda thing……….

    • http://www.entravity.com/ Entrav

Firstly, sorry for the super-late comment as I completely missed it. I was’t following Uchuu Kyoudai or Chihayafuru, but I have to admit that this is one of my favourites of that season. I think Yui deserves a bit more interaction here and there as she really does seem like a “tag-on.” Final episode is really a bonus so this episode is really the end and it’s a nice wrap up of the season. We’ll have to be waiting a long time for more though!

Oh god… I miss the anime SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH.
    Loved it so much…

I too think the scene when 8man & Yukino talked is wonderful, but this moment also will be the beginning of Yukino’s misunderstanding in 8man that lead to the break-down of them later (during the school trip).

Why is Yukino so angry at Hachiman?
